I just got the beta invite and started playing last night. I must say i was impressed by the quality of the details and the political depth of the scenario. So as every decent gamer i started the Tutorial. All was going well until the mining tutorial came.....Once i hit the "mining" button and the whole process started really slow....i waited and waited.....and ZzzzzZzzzzzzzz...Of course i fell asleep! I trully believe that in this type of game mining should NOT be done by your own avatar. I mean what am i supposed to be doing while my robot mines? Solve a crossword? Do we get mining bots later on?
**May i add that i have played the trial for EVE and the one major reason i disliked it was the "travelling" procedure which at first was all "Ohhh shiny" but after 20-30 times it was boring and time consuming as hell.

Some games arent just meant for you.
Mining isnt something which is supposed to stay there and watch the progress.
Mine + watch TV + reading news paper or doing something else. If you would do only mining and nothing meanwhile you would take serios brain damage :-)
EvE doors
See the best doors on EvE-on!
The mining sounds a bit like EVE's mining, which to me is boring as hell. I made my character a miner first off in EVE, put her in a Hulk which is now gathering dust in her hangar. I also doze off while mining, especially if I keep my sound on and hear the soft drilling sounds of the mining lasers.
I guess it's good if you want to watch a movie, read a book, do a puzzle, etc. while gaming, but as you asked, why put in such a boring game system? Sad to hear that it's the same in Perpetuum, which sounds so much like an EVE clone. Yawn...
Playing MUDs and MMOs since 1994.
No one is forcing you to mine you know.

Just go mine in the pvp zones, then you wont fall asleep
But as the above poster said, you dont have to mine, infact, its almost just as easy (and more entertaining) to kill things and recycle them.
Seriously...what am i supposed to be doing when my avatar is mining for 20-30 minutes?
Unless these type of games are for people that play the with radio/tv on and a few messengers to chat along with friends.
Mining is only one way to make NIC in the game. If it's boring to you then choose other ways such as doing assignments, grinding NPC's, PvP, or playing the market.
Mining is both boring and, at least initially, a lousy way to make a lot of NIC. I tried it, just to see how it went and to see if it was any more interesting than in Eve - it wasn't, and may be actually even more boring - and wasn't impressed. I queried some knowledgeable miners in chat and asked how much they make per run and how long it took them... and while they were happy with it, it's way too slow for me. Even as a newbie on my first day I was making 50k to 70k on a short run killing drones. Now I can loot stuff, solo, which makes one cargo hold worth around 600k to 700k per trip. In a group, and with a field canister, a million+ as part of my share isn't unusual. Plus the combat gets the adrenaline going.
I'll never be pounding rocks as a miner in this game or in Eve. Hat's off to you guys who do, because I admire both your patience and determination, but it just isn't for me.
The corp I recently joined is about to crank out 10 Mesmers folowed a few days later by 10 Grophos. Buying all the materials for those would have been very expensive. So mining has it's place in the game but I agree it is not particularly fun compared to running around popping stuff. I read while mining, or run around popping stuff on my second account.
If you just do one thing - you will eventually go insane in any game.
Perpetuum is a sand box and you and your fellow gamers are partial responisible for making things happen.
I have two alts, one combat and one industry. I do some mob fighting, collect some kernels and loot. Sell some stuff, give the indy the kernels the kernel and loot to sell. Log on my indy, search the marked for good deals and selling opportunities. Sell some buy some. research the kernels and see what nwe stuff I can produce. Go out to mine do some afk stuff. Go back to terminal, make sure my fabric, prototyping, selling and buing lines are in order. Do some more mining. head back. Log on my fighter, do some more mob killing and so one and so one.
If you vary your game, it will not feel boring.

And when we got more women on the team, it was like No, no, no. We need puppies and horses in there.

I've participated in corp mining runs in Eve, but do so as either a hauler (I got the skills just to help out corp miners, otherwise it sits in the hangar) or riding shotgun to protect the miners, so I'll play my part, but I just can't stand actual mining. My corp in this game is also about to produce mechs, and I do see the need for it, but I assist in gathering kernels and decoders and the like either for that project or other things corp members need them for. I just won't mine, ever.
