I'm on the fence with this one. With Warhammer 40k in development, being a far more established franchise, and similar concept I have a hard time seeing a Starcraft MMO surpassing it. If they were to make a SC MMO I would prefer they waited until after Starcraft 3 was out, to not only build up their franchise in terms of story, lore, classes, etc to give them something to build off of in the long term, but also to really try and pull in a very solid, established Starcraft community around the globe. There's a lot of Sci-Fi MMO's being made now, and it seems to be a very hard thing to succeed in for the long term, so far.
I honestly would really prefer a Diablo MMO 1st, myself. It seems to be a logical next step for Blizzard, and if they did that then we could probably be sure they work in 3's, and we would see a SC MMO after the next one .
A Starcraft MMO would be incredible. The factions would be Terran and Protoss, with Zerg as a universal enemy. And with the resources Blizzard has at its disposal, it would probably be a project on the scale of TOR.
I already wonder why this took a day before someone ask if sc could become a mmo lol.
Everything thats even slightest hyped you guys hope it becomes a mmo specially all these crappy developers like blizzard.
Well whats next diablo mmo im 100% positive someone will ask.
Good point, and there is some correlation as to what's new and hot, and why ppl seem to want and mmo of it. Interesting to see all these reactions wether positive or negative; though interesting nonetheless.
What surprise me is why people are so head over heels with this game.. Between talking to a friend that did the beta and from my experience from playing Supreme Commander 2.. Starcraft 2 isn't much different.. They are basically the same mechanics and layout, same gamestyle, similar graphics, multiplayer online.. etc etc.. Supreme Commander gets a B rating while it's CLONE made by Blizzard gets a screeming A+ for the same game...... WTF? Anymore I'm starting to think Blizzard can hype a piece of geological minerals customer built to you.. aka Pet Rock II........ and make millions..
Are you serious? It doesn't sound like you play many RTS strategy games; or any strategy games for that matter. Supreme Commander and Starcraft 2 are NOTHING alike. There are a ton of strategy games that are very similar to SupCom. Not a lot of strategy games are as fast paced as Starcraft 2. The mechanics and layout; nothing alike. The gamestyle; absolutely nothing alike. Graphics? No, not even remotely similar. And multiplayer online? Lol, Starcraft owns the multiplayer. SupCom 1 and 2 were both let downs on how that game was supposed to turn out. Starcraft 1 was a legend, and number 2 will probably be too. And if you think I'm a fanboy or something then you are also completely mistaken there. I didn't play a lot of Starcraft 1, but know a decent amount about the game. I bought SupCom when it was released and played it for awhile, but it didn't compare to Starcraft. Supreme Commander 1 and 2 were flops, nothing more than another clone of the age-old sci-fi RTS genre which was revolutionized originally by Starcraft 1.
Just to chime in in both your conversation, I actually enjoy more Universe at War, SC2, and then Supreme Commander 2... in that order. Not saying my second 2 choices suck or are bad games, just like them in that order... and basically enjoy all three games. Maybe I'll SC2 a little more with more gameplay hours into it, but who knows as I got it only yesterday.
However, I already see potential for MMORPG conversion even with the way the units, perhaps for each faction/race can start as a lowbie gurnt, and as you level up, you can choose various pathways to specializations. It could work...
A Starcraft MMO would be incredible. The factions would be Terran and Protoss, with Zerg as a universal enemy. And with the resources Blizzard has at its disposal, it would probably be a project on the scale of TOR.
Good point, "universal enemy". From that one could gleen spaceship combat, planet/city raiding from orbit, then finally ground combat with massive players in huge skirmishes... It's possible...
I usually hear how most people don't want anything to do with a StarCraft MMO, but I would LOVE to see one!
In all honesty, I would quit WoW in a heartbeat to play a Sci-Fi MMO that doesn't suck (even if it will probably just be a WoW clone, I mean, it would be from Blizz, I assume).
I can't begin to tell you how sick I am of elves and magic and junk like that.
Give me Protoss. Give me Zerg. Give me Terran.
Give me a fucking gun and let me shoot mechs and shit.
I'm so tired of cast bars and boring Trinity Magic, it's nothing new.
All that I ask of a SC MMO is that it uses the same if not better animations and controls that WoW has, and for Christ's sake DO NOT USE THE SAME UI.

Now that was just funny as hell to read.. I will agree with a previous poster.. C&C "OWNS" RTS vs. Starcraft 1 or 2.. My favorite was still C&C Generals w/ Zero Hour expansion, and that was made YEARS ago.. But like I said, I think the fanbois out there will endorse and buy anything with a Blizzard label.. even a pet rock 2.. I'm surprised that Blizzard hasnt' already sold their fans chunks of oxidized copper and call it "Fel Iron" for $19.95 plus S&H.. lmao
lol @ comparing an rts from ea vs a rts from blizzard. have you played command and conquer 4 ? c&c generals was the last good rts that came out of that company. - But im sure some fanbois will come in and say otherwise.
str=arctaft 1 was also made years ago and destroyed any sales figures of command and conquer.

C&C died right after EA took it over . With Generals being the first sign of a terminal disease (how did they even think taking away the cheesy cutscenes that were so particular for the C&C franchise was a good idea).
But during the Westwood era it was a top notch series , to my opinion at least. I'd go as far as saying that it's death was maybe a good thing, it started to become outdated , just like SC .
And like i said , SC sales figure means nothing when it comes to quality appart from it exceeding the minimum requirements. i've known some awesome games who sold extremely poorly due to a lack of hype and advertisement. the simple fact SC2 got so many sales before anyone actually played the full game or any proffessional reviews came out proves how much the sales are affected by pure hype. A lot of people think SC+Blizzard= win no matter what and anyone who pre-ordered it saying otherwise is a hypocrite(unless you played the beta before pre-ordering) . You cannot know a game is good if you didn't test it or anyone else for that matter , you than solely base your opinion on preformed ideas and hype.
And i'd go as far as saying that cathering the masses is sometimes exactly what a game shouldn't do . if it cathers the masses you can be sure as hell it's not complex for a tiny bit.
EDIT: When i love a game i will never use sales to defend my case , doing so proves you lack any substantial arguments . Whether a game is good or not is solely dependent on the game itself , not on the sales nor hype.
And also , be warned Blizzard fans, Activision is a disease even worse than EA (yes its possible) and while Blizzard might not be entirely infected it is infected .

Ofcourse it could work. Warcraft is a rts and look how that went ? If Blizzard was to make a Starcraft mmo they hypometer would explode through the roof and then some. Make it happen Blizzard!
I'd drop WoW to play World of Starcraft anyday. Yes, it could work. And yes, Blizzard is probably about the only company that can pull this off.
Have to caution, scifi is a tricky thing, as scifi fans are very picky. It's unlike fantasy rpg where anything that can cast magic and have hot elf chicks have a chance at succeeding. But if Blizzard could make warcraft work in a MMO, they most definitely can make starcraft work.
Hell yes I would play a Starcraft MMO. I hope to hell they wouldn't make it another two factioned game though. Zerg should be a god damn playable race! 3 factions = good RVRVR c'mon!!!
Blizz has already said their next MMO would be an original IP so this is like 20 years away at the earliest.
As long as Blizzard advertises "over 1 million players worldwide" it would sell like hotcakes... Even if it uses the same exact aged engine as World of Warcraft.. Blizzard fans are Blizzard fans.. Same goes for Diablo...

In a sense the game already is a RTSMMOG. Just don't see the translation of making it an MMORPG as the whole series is based on the conflict and change in the game.

No you are going too broad with your analogy.
Porn Fans = Videogame Fans in scope.
Blizzard fans = Naughty America fans.
And yes Naughty America fans would enjoy My First Sex Teacher as much as Naughty Office.

I think it would make a better 3 sided MMORTS type game a la Planetside. It should be more focused around battle and combat, with resource gathering a 2ndary afterthought much like the single player game.

I REALY hope they make a NEW MMORPG instead of keeping their diablo, Starcraft and warcraft themes.....even as a Blizzard fan i am kinda bored out at the moment with these three series.......be creative Blizz and give us something NEW pls.

They are. For years now, Blizzard has been developing their "Next Gen" MMO using a new IP. Some people think it's going to be Steampunk, some say it's going to be an FPS based game, but it's going to be new story, world, characters, etc.
I'd actually be interrested to see something like Universe of Starcraft, especially if there were three faction RvR like in DaoC.
I think they only way for this too work would for be for a new team too do it. Lets face it SC's team is made up of alot of WoW's and I don't want them too ruin this with WoW with machine guns. I love WoW I love SC... but I don't want them to be the same game. Truly I don't think Blizzard could handle a SC MMO I think it would strike out on comparision too its RTS.

Yes, I could already see players, or better yet, guilds competting for city domminance by setting up structures and automated city defenses and doing guild-mass resource gathering. One wonders if they'll do it like AoC or DF, or if they'll allow any area possilble to create guild city-states controlled not just by race but by specific guilds... Thanks for the inspiration, Kyleran.

All I have to say about this topic is that it would take the better half of a decade to develop.
