The engine used for WC3 was heavily modified and used for WoW.
I'd be willing to bet that blizzard designed the engine for SC2 to be versatile enough to be able to be used for their next MMO as well.
I definitey see a SCMMO in the works or at the very least a new MMO from blizzard using the same engine as what is in SC2.
Blizzard does not innovate, blizzard takes the best ideas from other developers and refines those ideas. Part of why their games always seem so polished is because they never have to spend any resources on actually coming up with something new. All of their resources are spent on polishing what is already out there.
They have a game library full of every single game ever made that employees can borrow from.
Blizzard are great craftsmen, not artists in the sense that they create something new.
