I thought what made games WoW clones was a reliance upon quests and dungeons for xp and loot. Gear based progression with the classes mostly falling into the trinity (which is actually a quadinity tank, healer, dps, crowd control). Cartoony graphics. Weird mounts. Monthly fee. Elves, short annoying races.. Blah blah..
What's the point of these comparison posts?
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
There's a lot of oldschoolers on this site but surprisingly I don't see much talk of FFXIV, so I thought I'd start this thread. If you are a fan of real MMORPGs, and miss how MMORPGs used to be such as EQ, DaoC, FFXI, UO, SWG, AO, AC, etc. before WoW came along, there is a chance we might get another game like them. That game is FFXIV, there hasn't been one since 2003. We might finally get a MMO that focuses on grouping, challenging gameplay, that virtual world feel and that isn't made for kids, people who play 30 minutes a day and console gamers.
Get over whatever you think about no jumping, no swimming, slow looking combat, no PvP, anime style, etc. You can't know whether you like/don't mind/dislike it until you try it. I thought I wouldn't like some of FFXI's features, but I loved the game. I thought I would love WoW, I quit after a few months.
Are you serious? There's no jumping or swimming in FF XIV? Seriously. There was swimming in EQ, (and jumping). Swimming was awesome in EQ, swimming in Lake Rathe to the bottom of the first island to fight the goblins... No PvP is fair enough, but swimming is quite important and has only added positive things to games that had it in my opinion.
but final fantasy dont have jumping of swiming they ahve them as mini things some times but nto int he sense of wow and other mmos. i didnt miss it in ffxi i doubt ill miss it here in ff xiv. if oyu dont like it there alway s the other mmos that have it.

But I think you hit it on the head.
They don't have swimming much like LOTRO doesn't have swimming underwater.
Reason being there is no content (as of yet ?) to warrant it.
If there is nothign to "swim to the bottom" to in order to fight, discover, etc then short of adding it for its own sake, I can see them saying "let's wait until we have something that is of merit".
Or just deciding to not include it and instead concentrate on above ground adventures.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
those are some of the grand fathers of MMO's.The only way I will try FFXIV is if I get into some form of beta.Otherwise Im not wasting my money on a game that already looks majorly boring.

Aw, come on. Don't leave us hanging. You gotta at least explain why it will never amount, even though FFXI is almost as old as them.
Also, looks can be deceiving. Beta means nothing.
To be the best, you must help each other become the best. FFXI Character: Satimasu FFXI Server: Valefor FFXIV Character: Tamorae Fonteil

You've gotta be kidding me.. Are you saying EQ doesn't look boring if you only watched fucking Youtube videos of it? This is how 12 year olds think. Haven't you ever heard of don't judge a book by its cover?
12 year olds huh? says who?
yeah Ive heard that saying before, but videos arent book covers, they show quite alot more than a cover actually..
and I see a snooze fest.
Take a look at Tera videos.am I supposed to "not judge that book by its cover" and assume the combat in that will eventaully become a snooze fest like FFXIV?

What's funny is FFXI doesn't belong in that list as it's nothing like those other games you've surrounded it with, and neither is FFXIV.
While I think it's great you're looking forward to the game, let's try to keep the ridiculousness to a minimum, please. Especially SWG ( even after the NGE ) and Anarchy Online, both of which make FFXI and FFXIV both seem hollow in comparison.
If you think FFXI isn't like EQ, DaoC and AO then I highly doubt you've played any of them. Unless you're talking about graphics, art style, etc. I'm talking about gameplay, mechanics, features.
UO and SWG are sandboxes, FFXI is a themepark but they're still similar in a lot of ways, or atleast closer to them than modern MMOs.
Hate to bust your bubble, boy, but I have played them all. And I stand by my statement. Anarchy Online alone has more diversity and depth than FFXI could ever hope to have. The only thing the games have in common is you press keys on your keyboard.

Regardless, I think this game will become predominantly group oriented the higher up you go.
I sure hope so!
/agree
Soloing low lvl stuff is fine, but for me high level, and to an even greater extent end-game content, should be group-oriented. Especially in a game like this where the RP aspects are more prominent... kinda hard to roleplay by yourself...
yep whats the point of being an mmo if it doesnt require grouping. damn wow : /
Sorry to bring this back up, Though, In FFXI, There was the class "Beast Master" which was able to solo via monster control up to level cap. Though, It was only type of class that was like that, but later in the game they made it so that you could summon rather weaker pets than the ones you could tame right off the side of the camp and not take away exp from the main group.
Either way I fully agree with you guys and the fact that Grouping while leveling.

Things FF14 seems to have in common with sandbox games:
Highly polarized community (either love it or hate, even at this stage)
Sort of skill based
Quests are optional
Things FF14 seems to have in common with themeparks:
Sort of class based
Can't affect the world in any meaningful way for other players
Even without quests, there's still well-defined progression paths
As for pointing fingers and saying, "I'm more old-school than you, nyah!", I think that's kind of silly.

it has pie!
Any pvp that is added on later will fail big time anyway. If they know how to do it they woulda done it already.
