My first MMORPG!

SWGLoverSWGLover Member, Newbie CommonPosts: 539

So, anybody still playing this?

This game was my introduction to the world of MMORPG's, I played for about a year until the UO beta opened up.

It was weirdly fun.

i agree.  it was my first graphical MMO as well.  i played it for almost 3 years all through high school back in the mid-90's.  It was really fun and for it's time pretty state of the art stuff.

This is one of those games that set the standards of today's MMO's (the foundation if you will).

too bad people are rating it so low.  if released today, yeah, it is a 5/10.  but it was released in '95-'96, still going after all this time.  not many games can do that.

This was my first MMORPG too back in the day.  I was in middle-school when I played this, haha.  It was so amazing for its time.

I remember when this first came out.  I saw it in Sierra magazine and HAD to play it.  It sounded so cool, so unique, so out of this world fun!  I was about 13-14 when it came out and absolutely loved it.  Played it until a little after EQ came out.

Wow I feel so old now :( Anyone remember the box drops?  Or when Stephen reset everyone back to level 1 :P

This was my first Online game as well, back in 1996, it's still going, but it switched hands several times, from sierra to codemasters to NG.

I Remember stephen, he Tried to buy the realm but NG won the bid.

yep this was my first one as well, it reminded me so much of the old King's Quest and Hero's Quest games from Sierra.  Which this was originally a Sierra online product before they sold it.  But cool to see it alive and well.

It's showing it's age now but back then the whole online rpg thing was weird to me. So, back then it was pretty good.

This was my first MMO as well. I remember spending lots of time in the greater hives and coming away with a few little gold cats. Dunno why but I had more fun playing that simple game than I do these days on the complicated but graphically far superior games we have now.

I aboslutley loved this game... I really don't think any MMO has been as fun as The Realm Online was. I still remember the music when you log in kinda gives me chills.

They should make this game free and I 100% guarantee you I would play it again. IMO no other MMO compared to the mature community and just the all out friendliness this game brought. It was a blast.

I looked on the box but decided for Meridian 59 instead... It was close but no cigarr.

The Realm was my first online MMO also.

UO came out and lured me away, but I still have fond memories of my first game.

It was my first too...  I mean, it just was like nothing else I knew.  Totally amazing.  It makes me wonder where the innovation has gone.

In a weird way I sorta wish no new games came after Realm Online, that this was as good as it got, I feel like the mmo community would be better if that happened.

man, i had so much fun playing this game in high school.  Just so suprised its not Free 2 play yet...

Love this game. I haven't played for a while but whenever I do I always get into enchanting. I seem to be a sucker for items going *poof* when an enchantment fails :) Very satisfying to have a 5x enchanted item after some hard work!

I lived in the town where Realm was born and know all the programmers and staff back then. NG really screwed the staff out of money and made the whole game a joke to play. I left when they hiked up the sub to $6.99 pfft.

This was also my first online game. It was "state of the art" at the time and was so addictive, both my sons and myself got addicted.  It was a great deal of fun.  I will never forget the term "jumpers", those people that like to "jump" you and beat you into the ground.  LOL. I was not good at PvP then either. I remember how mad I would get, I would have my oldest son get out his toon to attack them back.  I wasn't good enough. It was a great game then and still provides some great memories today.

Jumpers. . this was the first game I ever heard "toon" in as well.  It fit the game. . then got used in other games where it didn't make as much sense.

I do remember the game fondly and also left for UO.

This was my first MMORPG as well.  I remembered it pretty vividly too...  I also hated how people claimed UO was the first MMORPG and The Realm seems not as well known.  I think I played this for 2 years or so but i forget.  I played before the elves and whatnot and max level was 60 and I was 12 years old when I started and I am 27 now, how insane is that.  My fondest memories were being in MoB and hanging out with Gus Clan.  I remember we use to duel in SW corner of killing fields and everyone used a dagger of power and whenever it was your "turn" to move in combat people would switch to the stupid sword or dagger that had increased speed because we thought it would you an extra turn by chance (still think it was garbage).  Other memories were how insane the easter egg hunts were which is about when I got a Tan Baldric which was like a big f'in deal back in the day lol.

For some reason I've played many other games since then such as Everquest and WoW, but The Realm definitely had the most heart.  I mean for a game that didn't really have the greatest graphics, equipment, nor depth, the people in the game were just amazing.  The community in that game was in just another level and I really loved it.  I remembered back then so many people had character webpages which just doesn't happen nowadays.  I also remember how when the servers went down everyone would use the program "PowWow" to sit in chat for the servers to be back up.  A few months later would be the advent of ICQ and just about everyone would exchange ICQ UIN's. People in this game really loved to chat.  I think that's really what differed from this game to other games.  Nowadays people play MMORPG's for content and not the people.  We played The Realm because we were like "wow we can play with a thousand other people at the same time?"  and probably thought of it as a giant chatroom.  At that day in age people could have cared less for content because I mean MMORPG's were just so new.  But anyways, it's nice to see this game is still running and it'll always hold a special place in my heart.  Sierra will always be my favorite video game company.

P.S.  In case anyone was wondering, my name was Rebbellion/Rebellion in The Realm.

  • PaRoXiTiCPaRoXiTiC Member UncommonPosts: 603

My name was Greyhound and Claude

On my character Claude I believe I had one of the frist +5 Executioners. I loved that axe. I remember when I hit lvl 200 and was able to use it.

My cousin was an Elf Enchanter and we probably burnt 3 Wraths and 3 Executioners before we got that +5. I remember dominating Baby Dragon snakes in that cave to level up once I had that weopon.

Man I miss this game. I really hope it becomes Free 2 Play before the game shuts down. I would rather it stay alive at Free 2 Play then be just thrown in the trash. I would play this game everyday again if it was free. Just not worth paying $7.00 a month for a game that nobody plays. If it was free I bet the community would grow rapidly again. Many old players would come back to the game including me and my cousin.

This game is really missed. I'm just not a big fan of new modern day MMO's. They don't have the same feel as The Realm Online has.

How do you know how many people play it if you don't log in or can't access forums? :P

I remember playing this a lot. Remember when they were trying out new monsters and put Beholders in the game? There was no way to attack them and they wouldn’t attack you but would just show up in random places like in dungeon rooms where you have to defeat the monster there to continue. So you’d just be waiting there for it to disappear then scurry out before another could take it’s place.

This games terrible.  Ratlabs LLC now run it They are a bunch of power mad creeps who will ban your accounts without any notice for no reason at all.

The community is awful, so much hate, racism and abuse, Staff do NOTHING to stop any of this.

Updates are terribly done and when released course hours of downtime fix or roll back.

The servers contently crashing and can be down for hours befire staff even bother to reset it.

Loot is terrible... 1000 levels and find nothing of value.

for $5 per account you would do better playing something else more rewarding and worth while.

I played it for a bit back in the day. It was alright at the time for as far as I got in it, which wasn't all that. There was a company trying to make a similar game but with more modern aesthetics, called Dark Solstice or some such if I recall the name correctly.

I think that effort was abandoned as I haven't found any trace of it online for years.

After being disappointed in King's Quest 8 I checked it out. The company was having problems then another company from the same parent company also was having problems with it. I then abandoned it and came back 10 years later to see it still existed and same name chanter person was still playing and remembered me.
