eh, to an extent you are right, but for now im enjoying it simply because im so used to looking for some sort of icon indicating a quest is available. Now I actually have to do a little bit of work, even if at times it can be brain dead banter.
I kinda like not knowing which npc's give quests, makes you actually have to be a part of the the game and converse with the townsfolk if you want a quest or mission. Like I stated before I'll be on prolly everyday after either work or classes so hit me up IGN : Nethien on Fenrir and see if we can knock out some quests or missions. As well I cannot wait for FF XIV
Having to talk to every npc to find a quest only works if they take the effort to make talking to npcs interesting even when they dont have quest. Going through 300 brain dead npcs to find the one that has something to ask of you is no longer an acceptable game design, imo. Alternately they could have some npcs that give you a hint that someone else needs help. Either way it requires some design effort beyond just choosing an npc and flagging him to give quest.
Is that the main means of gaining XP, or can you camp mobs such as in EQ? EQ only had a handful of quests at all, and after playing so many games with quest markers and endless quest grinding it would actually be refreshing to just chill in one spot and camp mobs for a few hours.

I'm playing on Fenrir as well and the server is quite alive. I'm a hume warrior in that first town of choice (the one full of elvish looking npcs). I'm still only level 12 since I barely had any times to even read the forums, not even play the game, and, well, I didn't quite like looking at big galka ass so much so I rerolled a hume and now am enjoying it quite a bit more
Character name is Sudo ig, feel free to send me a /tell, will most probably get you invited to our linkshell, I got randomly and very luckily invited to a quite friendly one, I'm getting tons of help in it all the time, it's far from big but the people are nice and it's all that matters to me
The only advice I could give you so far is get familiar with the auction house system since it differs quite a lot from the normal action house we are used to from other mmos, and, as a warrior, get some (even the cheapest level 1 from vendor) great axe to start leveling that great axe skill up. It's gonna help you later on, after you pick a better axe.
Hope to see you and everybody else, tired of refreshing the inbox hoping for invite for FFXIV and instead deciding to get familiar with Square Enix great first mmo creation, in game, on Fenrir or not!

Is there a free trial of the game/ I went through the thread and do not see any reference to it.
I couldn't find any when I was considering trying the game out. All the people who posted in here either bought the full pack like me or took the steam deal which is extremley cheap at the moment. Sadly, only residents of US and Canada can enjoy the Steam deal, everybody else have to either find a local copy (good luck with that) or buy the game digitally from Square Enix eu online store (20 euro).

You don't get XP at all from most quests, you do them for an item reward or sometimes just gil and a title. Camping mobs in a party is the main method for going up levels. It's very reminiscent of EQ in that respect.
That would be awesome Sudo!! I'll be online periodically throught tonight, so hopefully I can find you in game and get an invite to your LS. As for classes I intend on raising all jobs to 10 so I have enough gil / conquest points to outfit the class I intend on taking to the dunes. As of now it looks like I will be a white mage.
hey lotos, I think I heard someone say in another thread that you can actually use a visa gift card you would normally pick up from a store for the game. I wouldnt quote me on that, but may be worth a look into if you wanted to come back to the game.

Just in case anyone reads this and thinks it's not possible to get the Steam deal in Europe, I live in Norway and bought it on Steam for €9.99 just a few days ago. It wasn't listed in their MMORPG category, but appeared when searching for it.
Not too sure I'll be able to enjoy the game, though. All the concepts seem great, but the interface is killing me, and 90% of players I encounter seem to have names like "jsxwtrway" ...which I assume is either bots, or japanese names that look weird when shown with latin characters. I think I'll buy FFXIV if it turns out to be more of the same just with updated graphics and friendlier controls, though. I'm sure FFXI must have been awesome back when it was new and had players in all level ranges doing content for the first time.
well as it stands im about 2 weeks into gameplay, have 3 classes to lvl 10 on of them being my whm which I intended on being my main class. got him fully geared and ready for the dunes to find that there was no one to party with. I tried making a party, I tried putting my lfg flag up, I tried ninja tells, I tried shouting in various zones, not one person attempted to chat with me =
I'm not trying to sound like a troll, just stating my experience. I am almost positive the majority of my problems come from starting out so late in the games life, and so close to the release of XIV.
That being said I still have time on my free month and will still be giving it an honest go in hopes of finding a linkshell, or a group of people I can play the game with.
I think I'll reroll on Fenrir. At least that gives a chance of hooking up with people who read this thread and figure they want to give FFXI a go.
I'd planned on playing a Galka blue mage, but at the moment I've just got several starter jobs to 5-9. Might as well start over.... maybe with a character that doesn't block the camera half the time ;p
I just cancelled my sub to FFXI in preparation of FFXIV. I was tired of playing it as I was only playing it to keep me busy. I've switched to F2P games to bide my time until September.
Yeah, I'm barely playing myself lately. I've been trying to finish all the gaming stuff I wanted to do before FFXIV comes out. Took the time to finally finish Mass Effect 2 and am now considering playing through Fallout 3 all over again, now with all the DLC patches.
There really are very few low level players around the town I am in. Most of the people are either level 75+ or can't be "checked" for the class level. I'm not really worried about partying or advancing in the game that much. After all, what I wanted is to get to know the game better. I log very casually and just enjoy doing minor quests for random town NPCs and roaming around dangerous zones, knowing any mob I haven't met yet can kill me unless I'm careful.
I'm hoping to get to level 20 and see how fishing works, since it's what I plan to do mostly in FFXIV, but, so far, I'm not sure how much fun fishing is gonna be with only 30 inventory slots, considering I can hardly even go adventure around without getting my bags full after an hour of face smashing. I don't have to remind you how long it takes to get back to the town and back to the zone you were at again
What I'm trying to say, don't forget what we bought FFXI for and just enjoy your time in, after all it's just a promo/demo for FFXIV which we'll all be playing in less than two months!

If you did end up rolling on Fenrir either post or PM your in game name and times you think you'll be on and I'll meet up with you. I am a Hume from Bastok.
awesome august I was starting to lose hope for getting started in this game :-P. Anyways im in bastok, so if you roll there I will be more than happy to help you out, granted the lvl 1-10 is mainly solo, but I can assist however needed, even to provide heals.

I did reroll on Fenrir. Started Grumpir, a Galka Red Mage in Bastok. I'll probably be on from about 9pm GMT until I get bored, or tired.

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

You guys are making me jealous. ): Stupid securecode.. I'd still be playing FFXI if it weren't for it.

Have FFXIV pre-ordered and starting to get a bit excited; game looks better every day!
Decided to give FFXI another shot before FFXIV launches, just to get into the mood. Going to try it on the xbox this time.
awesome! come over to fenrir!!!
anyone else want to join up before I stop watching this thread?

Got my xbox copy in the mail today and after a slight set back, I am currently patching. I'll update with Char name once I'm in.

Not sure about the "updated" part... but yes, I've recently started playing 11 more in anticipation of 14.
