Able to play without knowledge of the older games?

IzorkIzork Member UncommonPosts: 381

Hey.

So easy question - might be asked before - but couldn't find any threads about it.

So simple question: Do I need to play the other games or anything to play XIV? I mean to have fun.. Or can I still enjoy the story of it?

Final Fantasy storylines are almost always top-notch, with one or two exceptions. Also, only once has there been a true Final Fantasy sequal, and none of them follow the same stories, or take place in the same world with the same characters even.

SE does not normally disappoint on the story end. From beta so far it seems pretty solid.

Nope you'll be fine, as FFXIV takes place in the world of Hydaelyn beginning on the continent of Eorzea, where as FFXI took place in the world of Vana'diel.  Entirely different lore and storylines, and how you play and advance your character ~ except the same races of FFXI have returned, with some upgraded differences.

I'm having a hard time understanding what exactly you're asking. You understand this is an MMO right?

Regardless of what the story eventually is or about, the main draws are going to be logging in to a virtual world to explore and quest the world with others, leveling up and customizing your character along the way. I heard XI did have some cool story stuff in it and I guess expect people for this to follow the trend, but every final fantasy other than spin-off sequels have ALWAYS been completely new games with stand alone plots and characters.

The more pertinent question is do you want to play an mmo, if your answer is yes, this is looking to be a pretty good one from what we've seen so far and it comes out pretty soon.

  • XzenXzen Member UncommonPosts: 2,607

Your good to go. As Final Fantasy goes none of them are related to the rest in the series.... Unless you count FFX-2... and FFVII Crisis Core and FFVII Dirge of Cerberus..... Not sure about the naming conventions.... >.>

The only similarities it might have with other final fantasy games are recurring names/spells and item names/uses. Their is absolutely no reason to go back and play any of the others to get anything "more" out of this one.

Storylines between each game are completely independent from one another.

Nearly every Final Fantasy game uses different theme, setting (entirely different world), characters, etc.  There were only a few spinoff games of FFVII and nearly every FF game has been different.  You should have no issue jumping right in.

Things that are kept through the Final Fantasy series are certain spell names, a few item names, certain monsters (Malboro, Cactur, Moogles), summons, chocobos (giant birds that are ridden like horses), a character named Cid (who almost always has something to do with airships, but his role varies in games), airships, etc.

I've been playing MMOs for 7 years now.. I do know this is a MMO :)

My question has been answered - I can play Final Fantasy XIV without playing any of the other games.

To me it just sounded like someone asking if they should watch star wars movies to play star wars online, read the lord of the rings books to play that or have seen conan the barbarian to play age of conan =P Certainly none are necessary other than perhaps letting you know if you're already a fan of the series.

But with Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, it makes a very big difference if you've seen or read the originals. The games are (or should be) packed with people and places from the source material, and one of the big reasons for playing the game is to visit those places and talk to or fight against those people. Final Fantasy will be very different in that regard; aside from spotting cactuars, tonberries, the summons, etc. there probably won't be any references to the other games in the series.

I have the same doubt of the OP, not so much about the story and lore but about the gameplay and style.

I mean, im used to a more casual styled MMO, like WoW, LoTRo, etc. Will I be able to enjoy FFXIV or should I play XI first to get used to the gameplay system?

The only thing you should know... is to be more social. If you don't understand something, be sure to ask. If you need help, be sure to ask. There will be helpful fellows out there.

The game, as it is right now at least, does not really spell everything out to you and hold your hand. That is the biggest difference going from DaoC style games to FFXIV, but I don't think you need to play XI to catch on. It's still more new player friendly than XI was, but it doesn't throw the tutorials at your face and tell about all the details.

FFXIV is definitely casual though, no doubt about that. It's still going to be more group intensive than you're used to, however. Might take some time to get used to it from a new player's standpoint, but are MMO's fun when there's nothing new to learn and adapt to? :)

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

At this stage as a new player to FF games I would think that there is little to be gained from playing XI if you are going to head to XIV potentially long-term. In fact I would just suggest picking up a solo FF title, and even the ones on mobile devices can be fun, just to get an idea of where SE come from in terms of RPG. At launch if going XIV I think it fine to play casually, and I would just be friendly player and go for groups. That written there will be hard core PvEers out there.

If you want to be able to follow the storylines and/or understand the game mechanics. Then no, there is no need to go through all the previous titles in the franchise to "get it". As said before, every new Roman nummeral means a new Final Fantasy, storywise and worldwise. When a title is a clear spin-off or follow-up it's indicated in the name of that game (e.g. "Final Fantasy X" and "Final Fantasy X-2").

As far as game mechanics go, they have evovled and changed through the course of the series, so my best bet would be to just get attuned to them in-game. Even the most die-hard fans of the franchise go through this process with every new title.

If, on the other hand, you are really keen on understanding all of the iconography within the game (certain mobs, weapons/items/gear, NPC names, moogles, names of the servers, history of the crystals, chocobos, spells, etc.) then you best prepare for several hours of playing the Final Fantasy franchise or wading through the internet.  Although this might somewhat enhance your understanding and enjoyment of the story, game and references, it is in no way a MUST.

Well if you haven't played the other FF's how will you know what server to play on?

Hint: avoid the Sephiroth Server at all costs!

No NEED. But if you've never played Final Fantasy before... Wow! Go find an NES from a pawn shop / yard sale (or an emulator) and have fun.  FF never dissapoints!

The only game that would help you play this one, is Final Fantasy 11.

The battle mechanics are similar and the movement/menu controls are almost identical.

......Which is not so great for newcomers, since the controls for XI were as different from the norm as, now I'm going for ridiculous here, having glow in the dark aardvarks at your wedding.

    Oyah, I went there.
