Jumpgate Evolution executive producer Lance Robertson took some time out from his development duties to discuss what's become a hot topic on the JGE forums: Cross-nation communication.
Players have expressed concern that the lack of cross-nation communication will damage the Jumpgate: Evolution community. Robertson addresses this concern by articulating the reasons behind the design decision: Nations come first. Period.
Just let me say this up front and then I’ll elaborate: when confronted with a design choice that could negatively impact in-game cohesiveness, community, or strength of a nation, we will always opt in favor of strengthening a nation. From a story perspective, the three nations are hated enemies and always have been. They are now locked in an all-out war. These facts are more important to the game than any potential player subterfuge, spying or collusion between factions.

I think its rather silly to limit communications for the sole reason of "nation building". I believe that the example they used DAOC is the perfect example of WHY it shouldn't be used. I didn't feel "allegiance" to my nation in DAOC. All I knew was that one of the other nations (been so long I can't remember) was overpowered and overpopulated, and made the game unfun for PvP. Since we couldn't communicate with the other smaller nation, we couldn't coordinate anything versus the big one....
And if there's no reason to worry about spying (since it's all about combat in JGE supposedly), then why not allow cross faction talking? If there IS a reason to spy, people WILL use multiple accounts to do so, regardless of whether in-game communications allows cross-nation chat. They'll use OUT of game communications.... like they have since online games with sides first came out (good ol phones, if nothing else).
So, basically, there's no valid reason TO limit it, and lots of valid reasons NOT to, yet they're going to stick with the DAOC because that's what he knows (and it doesn't work, but it's what he knows).
Woot for critical thinking!
Funny... this seems to work well for WoW... I could be wrong but the largest subscriber based MMO has been doing it this way for years and it has never failed. To support my point, look at strengths of the faction/nation building between horde and alliance...
People have gotten into irl fights and arguements defending their factions/nations because they feel so strongly over it. Plus limiting the vocal tension in game leads to more involvement when it comes down to PvP.
There's no valid reason not to limit it... back in the days of vanilla WoW horde, had to work with ally to take down AQ, 2 40 man raids from different factions were able to work together to down the scourge without any cross-faction communication.
It's a shame that people cannot actually work together in todays gaming scene without having to talk/yell at each other. Should I hold your hand while I'm carrying you through a PvP battle, baby talking you through directions, because you forgot what teamwork means?
One of the things I did not like about the original JG was the factionless system that was in place.
It did lead to what most people liked about the game which was player driven content however, it also may the forumns a part of the game. Nothing worse that jumping in game and finding your enemies were now your friends and your friends were now your enemies and you had no clue because you had not trolled the boards for the last few hours to understand this.
And the boards were just a big whine fest of finger pointing and lying and name calling that made me sick. So, more power to ND! I do not want to hear the endless whining or complaing from those non-octavians!
Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.
So if you are at war you lose the abiity to communicate? Ridicilous...
My gaming blog
why is that ridicilous? look at the real life wars...
watch israelis fighting against almost the whole arabian world. it's an ongoing war.
yes, of course, they are communicating, but the hate ist so deep that the peace only wears for very short durations.
go, watch cnn and co on your 50" plasma screen... go and watch human nature in full hd...
