Don't know where to start...

I'm completely new to gaming in every way, shape, and form.  I want to find a game to play but am at a complete loss as to what to choose.  Any advice or recommendations for someone (like me) lacking any sort of experience??  I think the last time I ever played a video game was around when the first Sega first came out.. hahaha!

It depends on what games you like to play, your on a MMO site and i assume you like MMOs.  I would start with an easy mmo like WoW or Guild Wars.  Im currently waiting on FF XiV which comes out next month.

I know people who talk about MMO's all the time, started feeling a bit left out so thought i would give it a try.   As for the rest... therein lies the problem... I actually don't know what I like yet.  I'm definitely a fan of action.  Killing things sounds fun too...  i think good graphics would make playing more interesting as well, but who knows

Honestly, for an MMO beginner try WoW.  And not on any of the open FFA ( Free For All ) servers.  You would RageQuit the game after about 10 minutes.

WoW is a good game to start out on and get the fairly universal concepts of an MMO down.  Then graduate to something more interesting later.

Also, depending on the time you have/want/willing to invest in the MMO genre.  You can try out CO for some fun and solo and less grouping.  Very casual friendly game.

Champions Online is a similar product and more group friendly.  It is still lots of fun and just had a new release or expansion.

AoC is ok, a bit of a button masher to me but visually stunning.

EVE is beautifull but requires you to get a stiffy with spreadsheets.  If they do not excite you, move on.

EQII is going F2P, WARHAMMER can be played free through the first realm.  and Lord of the Rings and D&D are both F2P as well.

Most games have a free trial.  If they have been out for a while.  Go to their websites and take a peek.  Play some trials and make your decision on that.

Say hello, To the things you've left behind. They are more a part of your life now that you can't touch them.

Perhaps I'll give that a try then.  Thanks!! :D

If you have friends that play then play the game that they play.  Otherwise I suggest picking up a few free trials like World of Warcraft and Warhammer.

Make games you want to play.

Definitely download the Warhammer free trial.  Its free forever, and it caps you off at lvl 10.  But it is immensely fun.  If you like killing, then WAR would be the right mmo for you.

to be honest any mmorpg that has come out in the last 5 years is noob friendly ( not including FF11, EVE, Darkfall and maybe Fallen earth...)

so just look at any games on the list here

And see what looks good to you

Yeah, World of Warcraft is the best MMO for new players.

Guild Wars is another one, not as polished as WoW but has more action and killing. No jumping/swimming though, you also can't see other players while in zones with enemies.

If you think you'd like to have more casual fun you should try some first person shooter maybe. They aren't MMOs but you jump in to server with 2-32 players depending on game/server. Team Fortress 2 and Call of Duty series would be good examples.

What're you more interested in, gamepley with a more PvE experience for example killing npc's and dungeon gameplay.  Or something with more of a PvP-centric system with huge battles against other players.  If you want a more PvE experience go with WoW I played if for 4 years till they killed the game, but your a new player so you won't know the difference.  If you like PvP play Warhammer especially on the Badlands server it is extremely populated, and you will experience huge battles its real fun.  You can also lvl just by killing other players.  Both games are friendly to new mmo players.

The best way to start is to NOT start at all! You do not want to become one of us, wasting mind-numbing hours, killing X and collecting Y, looking for the next best game, frustrated that the next best game is not the next best game! I can go on and on but it would turn into a book.

    Don't say I didn't warn you :)

IMO, the first game you start will leave the biggest impression on your gaming preferences in the future, so if you must choose, choose wisely. ;)

One of the best things about this genre of games is that there are tons and tons of free trials about. Not having to spend money on something you are not going to like is a big plus. My advice, click on the quick game jump button on the top of this page and read about some of the games sugested to you by the posters. See if it has a free trial and download to have a look for youself. As above posters have mentioned you can't go wrong really with most of the recent tripple A titles. All start you off fairly easily and teach you how to play the game. My sugestions would be games like World Of Warcraft, Warhammer online or Champions online. They are probably the most accesable higher quality ones out there. Have fun and let us know how you get on :)

this is just my opinion, but i would prefer to play a game with my friends, see what your friends play and try it, if ur willing to play world of warcraft which is pay to play, i think you can pick up any game your friends are playing.

There are a ton of free trials out there so you don't have to waste money finding a game that you think you would have liked.  Just be careful with your system specs because you might not be able to enjoy a game with the improper specs!  Good luck and happy hunting  =)

I would say not starting with an mmo at all, since you say you have played much of any games for over 10 years :P

If that is indeed true, i'd probably start off with some single player RPG games, maybe something like diablo II which has simple easy to use controls (all done with the mouse) and it also an online option.

Atleast that way you'll get a pretty good understanding about what the RPG stands for in MMORPG and know what to expect from most MMO's.

hahaha!.. yes, i thought about the fact that, given my addictive personality, this might not be a good idea... but i can't help it. heheh :)

Thanks a lot everyone!  I'm definitely willing to pay, but I also think giving the free trials a go first is the smartest option.  Think i'll start with WOW.  Luckily, I just started a 2 week vacation, so that will give me time to figure this out... i hope. Yay! I'm excited!  :)

I can't believe that I just witnessed people on this forum point someone to WoW and without bloodshed.

    I'm scared.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

Don't forget City of Heroes. After playing WoW, Lotro and AoC on and off for years I like COH more than any of them.

Because WoW is a noob game and seeing the topic, I don't see it as making WoW superior, but more like, for dummies, not saying the OP is a dummy but starting something their first time with out a clue.

Just don't play it for more than 1 year and call yourself a veteran. :)
