General: Captains of the DarkTide in Open Beta

Browser based MMO, Captains of the Dark Tide, has entered its open beta phase of development. Developed by Silverlode Interactive, Captains of the DarkTide is a naval strategy MMO where players can get in touch with their epic seafarer.

According to the press release, CotDT allows players to explore an fantasy universe and can build/sell their own ships. Epic battles are entered with lich captains, ice elementals and more. Players can take part in PvP battles and on entry into a PvP zone, will automatically be flagged for PvP.

Because CoDT is set in a fantasy universe, the variety of upcoming content is boundless. Dwarves construct air ships which players will acquire, while the elves build and sell living ships. Undead can be bound to crew a ship, but asking them to serve side-by-side with humans can have “undesired” effects. “We are thrilled with the game already,” said Silverlode president Jason Faller, “and we look forward to dazzling players with the many features we are going to soon reveal.”

    Wow...this looks...really bad...but I haven't played it yet. And I don't plan on it.

Cut it some slack, it's a new game. Not EVERYTHING can be freaking WoW or EVE. It's people like you, that make games like that never last long enough to -become- something. Give it time. 8-Bit was what BUILT the Video Game industry. Legend of Zelda, Super Mario. Even if they weren't even 8-Bit, they still were low graphics.

I played it in the closed beta and found it worth my time. It has all the trappings of an MMO except you're a ship. WASD movement and abilities on a hotbar.  Lots of different things to loot when you defeat an enemy. I saw a number of creative touches that makes the future of the game seem promising. I guess you should keep in mind that it isn't a naval simulation, wind and physics have little effect.

The game is actually made with a commercially available MMO engine called Unity.  So, in a way it is kind of a mod.

Could still be a successful niche game though, especially in the PvP field, if they do it right.

Look, graphics don't have to be superb to get me to play a game (I spent a good bit of this weekend playing the first W40K Dawn of War games) but c'mon, this game is pretty low for 2010. I've seen better looking flash games.

Sig so that badges don't eat my posts.

I like this sailing and pirates games. In market is only POtbs avaliable, and this is a niche to work on new game. Yes , grapphic seems weak , but its browser game some is fast to try no need to dowload na install it.

There is no such thing as free when it comes to a so called f2p game that has significant pvp.

Not quite true.  So far I've discovered exactly one:  Regnum Online.
