As much as the launch was a distaster over a year ago.
Darkfall Online is still around and is the game I feel that has the most "potential"

Saying the game is going nowhere is just ignorant concidering that PvP is now more balanced than ever after the magic nerf.
Darkfall is far beyond Mortal Online development and bug wise. Concidering the WoW (EQ1) clones out there Aion, War, Aoc etc DF is a fresh breath in MORPG field.
Since WoW is whipping it's clones butts allover the place I'd say WoW has most potential in its genre. Darkfall could very well have the most potential in sanboxy-Fantasy genre (though still being sadly pretty far away from true sandbox).
As I said above:
It's time for people to give this game a first or a even a second or third chance.
The new graphics patch is only weeks away. And the finished overhaul aka (darkfall 2010) is suppose to be completed by December.

I resubbed an hour ago, couldn't help myself. I almost forgot just how good a game DF really is. Between this and EVE there aren't enough hours in the day.
For such an unmemorable time in the genre, I can't believe how much entertainment I'm actually getting out of it.

Everyone was firing pretty much the same spell over and over again. Looked pretty boring to me. The idea of a castle seige is always cool, I'll give you that, but the game itself looked pretty bad.
Most footage in that video is over a year old . ... spell graphics/sounds are different now, you do not see nearly as many mages anymore, and the expansion is coming out with new graphics, environmental sounds, directx11 (new models, etc.), prestige classes for more customization, new spells/skills, etc.

My understanding from trying to get into the game is that maybe there aren't as many mages, but everyone is pretty much a hybrid of everything. Boring.
Wrong.
Hybrid of everything is wrong because:
a - you would have to grind or macro to have everything and it would take a long time and nobody has capped everything.
b - combat is the fastest-pace around and you will not have time to do everything that you have unlocked . .. not even close.
c - you can win battles against year-old characters who have macroed everything with just melee and archery because of the patch a month ago or just a couple surging ranged spells (of your choice) if you do not want to use archery.
d - prestige classes are coming by the end of the year.
e - customization also comes from the gear that you wear, the play-style that you prefer (I am pretty much all melee), habits that you have formed during character development, enchanting gear to favor your favorite tactics, every range spell is customizable, there are several different melee and archery specializations to choose from, etc.
If you were right than I would have fought someone else who plays like me . .. and I never do . ... not even in the 16+ months that I have been playing. I always feel like one-of-a-kind.
I am so glad that I am not stuck with some cookie-cutter (rock, paper, scissors) build and never do I have to reroll to play a different class . .. I can just enchant stuff differently, choose different gear, visit a trainer and pick up some stuff, . .. that's it so never will I have to start over from scratch like I've done in every other game trying to find the right class for myself. I like the player freedom that I have been given here.
Whats boring is having to chose a class at the beginning and being told what I can and cannot do for as long as I play because of the class that I picked before I even knew anything about the game. Most games have totally imbalanced classes when it comes to PVP as well.

I just re-tried it and to me, it still has that empty feeling about it.

The game except ironing out bugs and some balance fixes hasn't been changed almost at all.

I played darkfall since release up until very recently and let me tell you. When people say "but it only takes 2-3 months to catch up" They are talking absolute bollocks. What They actually mean is if you leave your pc on and tabbed into darkfall for 2 months auto running/jumping into walls while casting over and over accoding to your macros script you will be able to fight, it sure as hell wont be even vs the vet who has being doing this since day 1 but you may be able to kill him if you surprise him. Playing the game as intended it would take about 1.5 years to be able to fight on a somewhat measurable playing field.
Anyone who says otherwise is a bullshitting troll, i played the game for god sake
Sid, I am bein realistic here, not optimistic.
I am happy they are actually going to deliever ONE of their missed promises about the game mobs gaining strength and attacking cities. I hope it is going to be as fun as outpost defences and assaults in Tabula Rasa.
Prestige classes ? Great, but they are just on paper so I suppose we will wait some time for them. I am looking forward to see other improvments to the game mentioned there.
Yet still for me the game lacks content and reasons to do stuff.
Introducing rare ores to all nodes around the world is just a step backwards. I never understood why they decided against encouraging people from wandering away from clan cities with real purpose like resources. Instead they added chaos chests and low money rewards from villages...seriously that's for me a wasted chance to make that game great.
Only thing they would have to do is make nodes drop more resources away from towns and add some super nodes placed in villages to which you would have access only if you conquered a village.
I would love to see as well:
1. More regional resources type needed to craft anything good quality: a type of wood for bows, a types of wood for ships building,a type of wood for buldings. Various quality iron ore, coal to create steel etc. Something which gives you a sandbox driven game content in lines: "Hey, our crafters report that they need more iron, which means we don't log in as our AFK alts but we take good gear, mount up and travel to x. It is actually 15 minutes away on a mount. Don't worry about need to harvest it for hours, some of us have coal mining specialization and they discovered that that mountain has anold abandoned mine full of high quality iron ore. It is risky as it seems we have been followed there by Pwnzyou clan last time and because of all that Cultists mobs who tend to wander around there, but it is worth a risk. Hahah just imagine a year ago we would AFK mine for hours just outside our player town and complain that there is no pvp action around except AFK miners ganking. Hahah"
2. Local or at least regional banking so traveling with resources and wares would be a must. Studenlly people would have another sources of pvp.
3. Pve which rewards you for taking a risk of fighting a high level mob and is exciting, instead of the present medium and higher difficulty mobs which health points ecourage exploiting insteaf of actually enjoying pve. They should hit hard and aim depending on their level ( officer > veteran > grunt ) but they shouldn't have 5 times more health then you. The only exception from that rule should be mobs like golems, dragons, giants, but the reward should be approriete to ammount of waster arrows, regents, armour durability loss. Right now PvE in DF is not challenging or fun, it is just tiresome.
4. Plenty of other stuff which would make Agon a breathing world and not a AFK farming/grinding fest.
I tried the game out, but after about 6 hours of really trying, I just could not get over how clunky the UI feels. And the animations are just horrid. The action pvp portion of the game might be amazing. But the rest of it killed the game for me before I could ever even get into that portion.
Both things are being re-created from a scratch in incoming "expansions" so you may actually give it a try later.
