Thou shalt not take advice on design from those with no experience in design.
Thou shalt pick a target market and cater to it.
Thou shalt not commit NGE.
When I picture a game not targeted on a group of people I see a game that tryes to lure in as many people as they can abandoning individualty. A game that everybody would play even people who usualy don't play ( There are a lot of thease peopla ) .I don't even mean WOW and clones, I see Farmville.
Thou shall not COMPLETELY revise gameplay and mechanics post release (ex: Star Wars NGE).
Thou shall continually provide new content, rather than just saving it up for the latest expansion packs.
Thou shall listen to their player base; however thou should also considerth that thine player base is mostly ignorant of good game design. Considerth thine player's whims, but do not caterth to them.
Thou shall take into consideration the failures and successes of thine competition and not make the same mistakes.
Thou shall not release an unfinished game. (This should go in any commandant list for MMORPG game design)
Thou shall be wary of whom thy selecth for PR, GMs, and customer service positions. Game developers shall never be placed into these positions. (Ex: Bill Roper or for a more well known non-game design related one, Steve Jobs)
Thou shall provide community building tools both in game and outside.
Thou shall attempt innovation when necessary. Thou shall not create "clones".
Thou shall keep scope limited enough to produce all features to superior quality.
Thou shall be aware of thy target demographic and not attempt to changes features/complexity/etc. just to appeal to other demographic's outside thy own.

Thou shalt not pester me/you/him/her/it/albert to sign their guild charter in return for money.
Thou shalt not abbreviate words because they are too lazy to put words 2gether.
Thou shalt not force me to wear any gear during raids, I like to be free with my compulsory pair of white underpants (or pink frilly underpants if your playing aion).
Thout shalt not talk about the ten commandments (or 4 in my case).
Thou shalt realize that if the last 25 mmos which went to market all faced some of the same issues (e.g., gold spam), you will probably also face those issues. Therefore thou shalt have a plan ready to deal with it. "OMG wtf!" is not a plan.

Yeah...but we must try to keep it within a certain number...if it goes over the specified 10 we will do something...something to make it work.
it should really stay within 10 i think...Even everything that has been offered so far doesn't fill up 10 spots. Most are repeating what has already been said and others are just offering up things that have nothing to do with anything. And if it just so happens to stick the last thing you want is pages of crap no one wants to read.
Well I'm not one for pretentious "thou shall" horse dookie so here's what I gots.
Chase the dream of your mmo not the cheques it'll bring you.
Don't try and cram everything into the first release, some content that works well is better than lots of content that's broken.
Play your own game properly and bring in content that everyone wants.
Listen and comunicate with your player base.
Accept that not everyone will want to play your game and that trying to cater for all will just water down and destroy anything interesting you created.
Hhahaha...some of these are really good and I'm making a list. So if you haven't contributed to this ultimate list of MMORPG game design...do it....do it....you know you want to.
thou shalt not be named (or have any association with) Smedley.
Grouping in Old school mmo's: meeting someone at the bar and chatting, getting to know them before jumping into bed. Current mmo's grouping: tinder. swipe, hookup, hope you don't get herpes, never see them again.

Thou shall not call thyself the "next generation mmo". Let thy community pronounce this.
Thou shall not wear cheap sunglasses and call thy game "Led Zepplin".
Thou shalt realize that if the last 25 mmos which went to market all faced some of the same issues (e.g., gold spam), you will probably also face those issues. Therefore thou shalt have a plan ready to deal with it. "OMG wtf!" is not a plan.

Thou shall focus on gameplay instead of graphics
This is my number 1 and the one I want to drill into the heads of every developer personally.

DON'T COPY
If you really must copy, do it better.
not that I'm jaded by "other" games
Devs should post their version of the commandments so we'll see their side of things.
I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been -Wayne Gretzky
Number one from their side would hopefully be: Our game shall not flop in a year.
Thou shall do the complete opposite of anything that Mythic Entertainment does.
And MMO players saw that it was good. And everyone rejoiced.
Hhahaha...some of these are really good and I'm making a list. So if you haven't contributed to this ultimate list of MMORPG game design...do it....do it....you know you want to.
Thou shalt not acquire a much loved franchise and treat it as nothing more than a piggy bank.
thou shalt not be named (or have any association with) Smedley.
Thou shall not sin by using the words "Cryptic" and "MMO" in a single line.
