I started this topic because of all the uproar about Middle Earth Online's decision to nix PVP (personally I Think it's a dumb decision). This poll has nothing to do with MEO, however. I'm curious as to how players feel about PVP in an MMO? Personally I think that if PVP is done right it adds a whole dimension to a game. UO did it extremely well but the penalties early on were a bit under-done. I also feel that any game that supports PVP should restrict you to 1 character per server (if multiple servers) and only 1 character per account if only 1 server in order to prevent people from getting around their reputation or using "alts" to buy things for their evil bad dude who can't go to town.
Anyway, please vote, I am honestly interested. Hopefully folks who actually work on MMO's will find this poll useful as well.

So far 78.6 percent of players prefer PVP of some kind to no pvp at all. Pretty telling figure. Game companies need to start paying attention to this figure.

Well, so far nearly 70% of people are against full PvP.
I think DAoC did it best. I would rather play a PvE game than a full PvP game, but there are enough restrictions in the DAoC system that you can go PvP when you want, but you don't get ganked when you are just out to PvE. And if you want that extra risk, there are places where you can PvE in a PvP area.
Oh ya, I also like the sieges in DAoC. More than just killing other people, you get to break and destroy things.
i always find it interesting that people don't mind losing to a computer, but losing to another human...
PvE is in the end a battle against stats, web sites etc. will give you the best tactics to use, the right armour to equip, what level you need to be. PvP is the unknown - sometimes the person you are up against has equipped the right stuff, doesn't use any tactics, other times the person will be very experienced and able to defeat you easily. PvP as a whole doesnt really work in level based games, unless there is no difference between levels (if so, what's the point of levels?) since usually a level 89 will be invincible against a lvl 10.
The other issue with PvP is solo vs group play. There are many reasons why people play/are forced to play solo, from social phobia to lack of time to find a group. IMO teamwork should always be rewarded, it happens in RL so why not in MMO's. If it takes your guild too long to get together, find (or start up) a new guild that live/exist closer together.
Ganking is a major problem. Usually this is caused by having points where players are forced to pass through. It is the most basic tactic that exists, load up your char/ship with weapons and do maximum damage to all targets you can beat (otherwise run away, or don't engage). This is almost always old vs new, and pretty pointless (since new players don't usually stand a chance). The ways to solve this are: to remove chokepoints; add some form of rankings; to move combat away from chokepoints by making it more fun/giving a reason to fight somewhere else (where you perhaps lose some of the advantages of defence).
The ultimate aim of AI is to have it so that you can't tell whether its an AI or a human. At that point does it really matter whether that is an AI or a human?
---sig---
PvE in general is pretty lame, if you think long and hard about it. You are spending your time beating a severely gimped AI that would lose to a well trained monkey. Best not to think too long and hard why you are wasting time playing games in general actually...
Stop whining about MEO and no - PvP already. There are enough games out there with PvP, not every game needs to cater to the mindless arena fights. Some people like storyline ya know without having someone ganking them. It already shows that MEO will do just fine without PvP and it isn't the first MMO that doesn't care to make it the primary focus.
I am glad Turbine is not having it. If I want PvP I will go play DnL or WoW. The way I see it, MEO will not be so filled with idiots just like the ones we get on the RP servers on WoW when the PVP servers are down. However, maybe I am wasting my time trying to get you to understand that PvP won't fit in MEO properly. It is like arguing with a child molester that older women are better.
I won't waste anymore time. And please stop coming over to the MEO site and talking like you have no self control. It is making you PvP people look like you don't even know the first thing about self expression. Did they stop teaching Sociology in high school or something? Or all you PvP players still not in highschool yet?
Good points, but if one had their choice would they rather have PvP or not have PvP as an *option*. Note that some of those options are fully restricted PVP. For example: DAOC and WoW both have PVP but it's in an area designated for PVP. Players in those games can play their entire existance in them and never engage in PVP. SWG has yet another way of protecting those who don't wish to engage in PVP. Similar to the PVP flag in old EQ where players can choose to be flagged for PVP. Another excellent system where you can engage in PVP if you so desire and can even turn it on and off as you wish (though turning it off does require you to go hide for an hour or so).
EQ2, on the other hand, has no PVP. It's still pretty fun as far as PVE goes but wouldn't it be more interesting if the players of freeport and the players of qeynos had the ability to actually clash in warfare now and then? Maybe in a battlefield type zone somewhere?
The poll isn't about which is better, just which people prefer I'm honestly interested to know.

Talk about 'idiots'. This isn't about MEO this is about whether people prefer PVP in an MMO or not... It has *ZIP* to do with MEO other than I saw the big stir it created when they nixed it.
And I've been on the MEO site for ages. I have posted *ONCE* stating that I think removing PvP may be a mistake. I think my post was a whopping 4 lines to the effect of: I hope you are right but I think it's a mistake.
Personally I've been playing MMO's since 1988/89 when AOL kicked off NeverWinter Nights online. In the 18 years or so that I've been playing various MMO's I've found, honestly, that the ones which have PVP as an option for players seem to have the most depth. I find it humorous that you come over here and berate me for posting ONE post on the MEO forums. If you paid attention you'd see that I've had my MEO account for over a year now. I don't post much, even here I'm barely over 200 total posts in 1.25 years.
I'm not posting about MEO, get OVER MEO I'm posting about PvP in MMO's and what people prefer. Why? Because I want to know.

IDIOT? I think you just provided to ALL of us who is really shown as the true IDIOT!
First off if this has "ZIP" to do with MEO, why did you state this?
Elnator says: "I started this topic because of all the uproar about Middle Earth Online's decision to nix PVP"
But then to add to that, this is nothing to do with it only contradicts itself. Or are you just trying to save yourself from anyone calling your bluff?
About your post at MEO. I wouldn't know. But obviously you are one of the loud few that came there and not come here to get votes to show up MEO to say "SEE, see look at all the people wanting PvP". Am I not right? Don't take it to a PvP dominated site (we all know the majority of the PvP community, or at least very loud ones visit here a lot.) and get the polls up. Just let what the MEO commmunity has a;ready stated, as it has shown over there is most don't care or don't feel it is necessary to have it.
You just need to get over thinking EVERY SINGLE MMORPG HAS TO BE PVP. There are communities of NON_PVP MMORPG's you know. That is why EQ@ doesn't have it. Asheron's Call only has 1/8 of their servers and only half of WoW's is PvP. Don't worry, you still got DnL, Guild Wars and some other good PvP MMO's. Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoy good PvP as well, just too bad that PvP is so choatic that it isn't enything near what it really should be. With that siad, It wouldn't give Middle Earth it's glorry for the PvP that is available. Oh BTW it is Middle Earth Online, Not War of the Rings. The game will be based off the books not the movie.
Finally where you shine even more is your claim to such history with stating that you were playing on Old Lord Nasher's Lounge back in 1988. Well, I have to say I GOT you there, First off Neverwinter Nights Online at AOL didn't even start up until 1991 and was closed down in 1997. I've been a fan of D&D ever since Gary Gygax even started TSR back in 1974. Wel I may have been only ten years old at the time. But that is about when I first heard of old D&D and my first campaign was with good ol' Greyhawk Adventures. I've played NwN Online, Played all the D&D Gold box series, Darksun:SL and also DS Online. The Realm Online. Meridian 59, UO, Lineage, LoR, EQ, AC, DAoC, AO, SB, PT,AC2, Neocron, FFXIO ,RO , HZ, CoH, WoW, EQ2 and more, plus beta tested too many to even recall. As I see it, PvP can stay or go and it won't be missed by too many. The PvP system is too corrupted as it sits now and open to, too much grief players to take advantage of it. So, in the RPG genre as it sits now, PvP is more of a nuisance for storyline players and only provides chaos and disfunction to a game setting. Even on WoW on the RP servers it is hard to RP the PvP scene when you still have mindless players constantly spamming you will duel requests to the point that you start adding them to your ignore list. Perfect example...Come to a RP server when Blizzard shuts down a list of PvP servers for maintainance. I think a lot of people here that play WoW-RP or even normal servers may understand. But I think it is more than likely worse on the RP servers. Imagine that happening on MEO. I can see it now...There are too many immature people out there gettings their fun off of ruining others gameplay than trying to find their own fun using their intellgence. Reason why I say immature is because I know for a fact there are young kids even as young as 12 that want to get more into a story than running around mindlessly killing others without any in game reason. To me and to a LOT of others, PvP won't be missed in MEO at all. If you and any other PvP demanding fans think different. Then I suggest you just move alone and stop whining about one game or another not having PvP. Not all RPG games are suppose to cater to you. You got DAoC, Basically WoW and Guildwars and leave EQ2, MEO and DDDO to use carebears. Oh BTW have you hugged a Dragon today? No, why not? Oh I guess use CAREBEARS are the only ones to hug dragons huh? Remember, we are carebears, we don't kill, we love all.. Geez, and that to me my friend only shows whoever uses that term only shows how ignorant you are. If any of you that use that term ever unnderstood my end you would see most aren't against PKing, we are just against mindless and thoughtless PvP without a solid purpose. Without that, you aren'y even playing a RPG, that is why a lot of us tell you if I want to play that way I will go play a FPS game. Are you starting to see the logic yet? Now, see why most of MEO and other non-PvP gamers don't want that in their game. No Consequences ... If and when PvP starts to fit more properly in a MMORPG, I am sure the majority will switch. Until then, major PvP will still be looked at as a nuisance rather than a benefit. So calling then carebears doesn't intimidate anyone at all. But more reflects the image back onto you name caller as ADD, short attention span retard!!! Sorry, I didn't make them look that way, they did it to themselves.....
Oh, BTW just incase you need my VERIFICATION about NWNO .....Click on "history"
Oh, plus you can actually download the Neverwitner Nights offline version of the game. Cool huh? Maybe you can play it now for the FIRST time so atleast now you wouldn't be a lair.
PS. sorry for all the typos. It is morning now and after a long night of WoW I am very tired and have sloppy writing including run ons and extended sentences and pararaphs..G'nite and please don't take my post personally. too many people wear their emotions on the outside on these forums, so I won't even bother to reply to any PvP rantings. good luck and maybe someday when PvP becomes more matured I will cya when I slit your throat ....
I also think it's amazing that in the 21st century Turbine can possibly consider releasing MEO without PVP.
Especially given that the time period for their license is based during the War of the Ring
Just unbelievable, it's almost as if Turbine is hoping to create another dismal failure like AC2. PvP is far more popular than it has ever been. WoW PvP servers in Europe, US and Asia all outnumber PvE servers, not only do they outnumber them, the population on them is normally listed as full compared to medium capacity on the PvE servers.
Even COH is adding PvP!
WoW has over 1.5 million subscribers, it's sold out all over Europe, I wonder just how much more proof do they need that controlled PvP is the mature and popular choice with the userbase and that those who oppose PvE are generally suffering terrible flashbacks to pre trammel uo when they lost all their ingots.
I say PvP zones, but dont put any PvE candy in those zones.
Althought I dislike WoW, the PvE servers of WoW are the closest to what is acceptable for me on this precise topic. Yet, I wont mind, cry or waste 1 second if there is no PvP at all, for me PvP is a side option at best. If it become a ''must PvP thing'' for access to any PvE candy, I will then open fire and throw all I have against the system.
- "If I understand you well, you are telling me until next time. " - Ren
I feel that it depends on the game. if the game is like, happy midevil fun time mmorpg there shouldnt be any pvp. but if its based on a war or something like that, full pvp anywhere any time.

First off, you can't bring AC2 into this since all there servers support PvP in one way or another. Standard servers had PvP areas, Then the Kindom ones like cold eve which is more like DAoC and WoW type of PvP, then ofcourse Darktide like on old AC it was FULL blown PVP. AC2's failure was due to being a dumbed down game that old AC gamers gave it a bad name which even scared off non AC players to even come to play.. Not to mention that the whole franchise never did get good plublication. I can go on all day with what happened there. I played AC for over 4 years and never player AC2 past the beta. If anything with regards to AC2 is that it proves that PvP is not a preferred method. Same thing goes with Shadowbane. That game is also struggling to stay around. Also look at Dragon Empires, it was suppose to be even way better than Shadowbane and it was cancelled. Infact there are already rumors that DnL might not even make it to open beta.
Just because CoH is adding CoV, you don't know how long it will last. It isn't around yet so you can't even say how well it is doing with PvP. So don't give credit to something that hasn't even shown success for being something it isn't yet.
This even gets better. As For WoW, first off you got to realize WoW got most of it's players from Battle.net and of course players from Warcraft series, Starcraft series and Diablo series. both RTS games being STRONGLY on PvP and with their only RPG being a Hash n Slash, of course most players from there are PK lovers. So, if you thinkn Wow sucked in all the MMORPG gamers, then that is in error. EQ2 still got a VERY large portion of it's players and new ows from other MMO's as well. Wow, basically moved a lot of people from FREE play over at Battle.net to P2P at WoW. Anyway, also you are completely wrong with the server numbers. First off you got to realize RP is also a server type that has the same set of rules for PvP as the normal servers.. so if you add all the PvP servers up you have 47. if you add up the normal/RP servers (since they go by the same rules of PvP) there are 49. Now this is really going to add another aspect to how PvP is failing even in WoW. Look now I am sure it won't change much around lunch time and being saturaday, which is consicered a peak time for gaming on WoW.
You will notice that the PvP servers have over 30+ servers that are at LOW. with the Normal servers having over 30+ at Medium. about 10 High for PvP and about 8 high for Normal. However, you also got to remember that Blizzard has been getting all the high end normal servers and doing a rebalance, moving charaters from high to low servers. I think if you really take a close look at the PvP servers and if they did the same thing, you will have all low servers. In the end the normal servers would be all MEDIUM and all the PvP all LOW. This already tells me that Blizzard will be moving some of their servers back to the Battle.net room aye?
PvP is not on the uprise as you may think. It will balance out of course. But it will not dominate the MMORPG genre. Now it may start getting bigger in the MMORTS and MMOFPS genre, but not the RPG. Infact true to MMORPG games are moving more towards stronger story and slowly incorporating what I call a PKlite, or some type of mild PK to hone out the combat twitcher and level grinders. So far WoW is the only true success that has incorporated PVP, well DAoC has as well, but you will notice they both are more as a RvR type scenerio, not a all out CHOAS battle of gankers that have an attention span of a person with ADD. That type of PvP will be left behind for all the FPS hackers that require an aimbot and wallhack to even play.
Oh one final note....Embers I think you need to realize, eventhough it is during the 3rd age it is still Middle Earth we are talking about. THAT is the focus. Not all based around the WAR of the Ring. It isn't LoTR Online it is Middle Earth Online. All you guys got to stop trying to base the world on one book. It is about Middle Earth...I think you guys got too excited from the movie.

Oh my god, sue me, I misremembered the date by 2 years. Please. It was a long time ago. As to D&D it wasn't AD&D back then it was just D&D. I started playing D&D when I was 11 years old in 1978 so you have me by 4 years on D&D but that isn't an MMO, now is it? Who cares why are you even bringing D&D into a discussion about PVP? D&D wasn't about PvP it was about Party Cooperation. I played dozens of pen and paper RPG's growing up as a kid, what's your point? Are you trying to somehow imply that you're a 'better' rpg player because you've been playing since '74 when I've only been playing since '78? All I was saying with my statement about having played ***MMORPG's*** since NWN came out on AOL is that I have a lot of experience with MMO's and in my *personal* opinion PvP adds to the game.
As to my "lie"... I was off by approximately 1.5 years. I didn't go dig up a timeline online to state it because I vaguely recalled that I started playing NWN shortly after getting out of the military. Since I got out in 1988 I mis-remembered the date NWN came out which is why I said 88/89, I misremembered by 2 years, shoot me, I shoulda said 90/91 whatever.
And I'm not the one who started with the "idiot" comment, you are. Go re-read your original reply to me where you were the one calling *me* an idiot for going to the MEO boards here (which I haven't) to "whine" about MEO removing PVP, which I haven't. I stated on the news thread that I think it's a dumb move and I stated *once* on the MEO boards (which I've been a member of since... wait let me check so I don't mis-remember the date....Join Date: Jan 2004... there I made sure I got the exact date for you, happy?) that I think removing the alignment system AND PVP was a mistake as well.
I never said *this* post was about MEO I said the discussion about MEO got me thinking about the topic in general and I was curious how other players feel about having PvP in MMO's *in general*. Are you really so slavishly enraptured with MEO that you think nobody can think about PVP in an MMO without it being *about* MEO? I merely posted the poll to see how people feel about the topic.
OBVIOUSLY you hate the idea, that's great. But don't come attacking my poll because you are under some lame assumption that I'm trying to go tell the people at Turbine to put PVP into MEO. I'm not, I won't, and I could care less what they do with it. It's THEIR game. I'm merely trying to get a feel for how PLAYERS IN GENERAL feel about PVP in an MMO. Sorry you can't grasp that simple concept without starting a flame war.
I'll also point out that, as of right now, 80% of the people who have responded to this post have said they prefer PVP of some kind over no PVP at all which puts you solidly in the minority. So please, mind your manners and be more courteous. It's just a poll. It's NOT about MEO, much as you would like it to be, MEO just happened to cause me to think about it is all.

I chose completely unrestricted PVP because of my experiences with Asheron's Call. Darktide (the unrestricted PVP server) was probably the most fun thing I have ever played. Although this doesn't completely have to do with this topic, I do not really like pre-set realms that you must be, like in DAoC. AC was fun because people against unrestricted killing fought those who killed everyone in sight and eventually guilds formed and there were fun fights, etc... but Turbine messed up AC long ago... back to PVP in games, I believe that unrestricted PVP, or at least a PVP server, is best because it allows more freedom to the player.
Lineage 2 pvp=best. They are making it better too. The PvP is not just randomly fighting each other, there is guild wars, castle seiges, etc. Soon in chronicle 3 there will be more! Best mmorpg I have played has been Lineage 2(many people probably wouldn't agree though).
Originally posted by _Drakin_ DAOC has the best PvP system of any mmorpg out in my opinion. I like the realm based warfare with seperate PvE/PvP zones.
Yeah, it's a good system, but I like unrestricted PvP...
Truthfully pvp is what makes mmorpg more fun, giving another option to the user to explore new way to get better besides just killing monsters. This way you can test your might on an actual human counterpart and make him pay for seeing you in that barren field or in tha dungeon. Any flavor of pvp will do to give you a good taste of what greatness feels like; unrestricted the more "fruity" of the pvps where death can lurk behind any corner andy tree and any person you begin to trust only the iron stomach players can handlel this hot tomale'. There is the seprate type giving you a hot and mild flavor to liven up your mood, nothing like killing a unsuspecting newbie to get you in a good mood.
Then there is the other time I cant remember right now but you get the idea. Pvp is the Emril type with that extra hit of Old Bay seasoning and just tastes way better than the bland old not ...kicked up version.
Serves about 100,000-300,000+ people and dont forget death is a dish best served cold. Enjoy

PVP Zones, for instance towns are safe but outside of town its PVP zone, or special areas to PVP.

I would just like to agree with the above post.
" - Ren
Unrestricted full pvp. The only way to go! This changes the settings on a game from easy to hard. It's a real challenge.
Look now I am sure it won't change much around lunch time and being saturaday, which is consicered a peak time for gaming on WoW.
http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/realmstatus/
I prefer full map pvp, no safe zones, no penalties.

Enjoy
