"best" Fantasy MMO.

NamicaNamica Member Posts: 71

What would you say is the best Fantasy MMO out there? By fantasy I mean things like WoW, EQ 1 'n' 2, Vanguard etc... and why do you think it's the best?

EDIT:

Derp, forgot to put my own answer.

WoW is to cartoony and full of pop culture for my tastes.

EQ1, while fun, has aged badly in my opinion.

EQ2, while also good, has TERRIBLE immersion.

I'm trying out Vangaurd at the moment.

Darkfall was fun, but EVERYTHING IS DEAD (not player wise, PvE wise)

If Guild Wars had PvE that wasn't so repititious I'd say it was the best.

I'd say, out of what I've played, EQ1 was the best for fantasy. Fun world, decent immersion for the technology of the time, and generally good players. A shame it's sequel feels so artificial.

Hmmmm... Might I suggest Atlantica or Anarchy online? Just throwing that in the mix lol.

Anarchy Online was more Sci Fi than fantasy.

  • Bert281Bert281 Member Posts: 5

Yeah you got a point but even though it is Sci-Fi based it still has strong ties with most fantasy MMO's. I mean Sci-Fi it self is a form of fantasy :).

If we can include games in pre-release states, then I'd say that phase 2 of Vanguard's beta was the best fantasy MMO experience I've ever had. Once Microsoft was replaced by SOE, it rapidly became a very different game, and I certainly wouldn't play it today.

Lotro if I have to pick just one.

Lord of the Rings Online by far is the best. It is one of the only IP MMO's that have been pretty consistent to the lore. Dunegeons and Dragons Online is also a good one, but LOTRO is better.

I mostly play lineage 2 in a low rate(4x) private server

Its a really good FUN mmo, but its not to be taken seriously cause there are classes that can one shot others at high lvls etc(ncsoft doesnt know the thing called class balance xD)

Graphic wise its awesome, very detailed weapons armors and very detailed dungeons etc

Awesome theme music at each place, the only mmo that i noticed theme music

pve wise grind, ye thats how you lvl, killing repeatedly monsters at a specific area. at high lvls you mostly get bored and just look for raid parties to kill raid bosses. At high lvls its a little slow to lvl. Story can be nice but i am not the type who is interested in story  alot so i cant tell

Some raid bosses like antharas or valakas are awesome for example. My opinion that is though xD

Economy is brutal, getting b,a,s,s80 armor sets are really difficult to get

pvp wise- You can pvp everywhere, you can even kill someone who doesnt attack you(but if you kill him without him responding you get flagged and get a possibility of droppin some of your items, flag gets away if you kill a few mobs). PvP can be really fun in low lvls since you cant one shot ppl or have insane advantages and its mostly about how you use skills. And also mass pvp is very good in l2 too(castle sieges, clan wars etc)

I can't say enough good things about Lineage 2.

However, I don't really think of it as being a good fantasy game. Oh, it is fantasy. But the game really is more about the player vs player interaction over any sort of world/universe development.

each area is there so that players can level and/or fight over them. The areas are beautiful and it's a testament to the game that most of it is open world. I say most because Gracia strikes me as a series of islands or areas. I haven't really delved too deeply into Gracia.

You'd think by now we'd all have each others' opinions on this topic MEMORIZED.

    I'm just sayin'......

For me it's EQ2, LotRO, Vanguard.

I am currently enjoying Aion. Laugh it up, but I am. I kind of like the grind aspect, so that I am not maxed out and complaining about being bored. This game might turn me on to more asian mmorpgs.  I have heard good things about lineage 2, however, one thing that always smashes it, is the strong complaint of botting. Is there still rampant botting?

There are a lot of good fantasy MMO's...

But can't say that there is a best one. All current MMO's have strongs and weaknesses, but in my point of view none of them is near perfect.  Istart playing them because of the things i like, i quit them because of the things i don't like.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

I really liked Aion so no admonishment from me.

As far as botting "meh". There is a lot of botting in games when people are trying to get competitive. Gold Sellers too.

However, take note that L2 is far harder than Aion. Oh sure, they have done quite a lot to make the leveling easier when starting out but there really aren't a lot of quests (though you should do all the quests in the starter area) and it is essentially a grind game.

Still, it has an open world, castle ownership that matters and a very robust economy. It's also an extremely brutal economy. And since I don't believe in putting forth huge effort to make fake money in games when the same effort can be done to make real money in my own life I ended up discontinuing my sub after 4+ years.

    No contest... WoW.
Best pve raiding by far. Seemless gameworld ( besides dungeons/raids & bgs/arena) great combat, diverse class specs, casual friendly pvp, casual friendly everything. It's not sandbox but it owns all other fantasy mmorpg on the market today.

    Playing: Rift, LotRO
    Waiting on: GW2, BP

In terms of today's market, I do agree that wow owns but im not really a fan. Im just looking forward to star wars: the old republic, I think that will kill wow lol

  • buegurbuegur Member UncommonPosts: 457

My all time favorite was DAoC! Now I would have to say Vanguard and EQ2, although I'm playing neither at the moment.  My interest for the forseeable future is STO.

  • dragonbranddragonbrand Member UncommonPosts: 441

WOW in a close one over Vanguard. With more population I could definitively say Vanguard. All of the game systems are better, the world is better...there just not enough people playing.

Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.

Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS
