From the point of view of a total outsider, it looks like Blizzard hasn't really capitalized on the brilliance of Warcraft with WoW. Don't get me wrong. I understand that the game is really fun to play. Almost everyone who's played it, even people who decided to quit, say that. So they must have done something really right with the way the game actually works. But it looks like they made an MMO with characters from Warcraft, and not really a Warcraft World.
Where the hell are the battles? It looks like Battlegrounds is their answer to that question. But damn, could they have come up with anything more complicated for their first battle in a Warcraft World? That's not a knock on Alterac Valley coz it sounds good as an idea, and forget for the moment that it's not up yet. I just wonder why there aren't smaller battles going on everywhere along the contested border - or wherever, that players of all levels can get into while they gear up for the big ones like Alterac and whatever comes after that.
You know, start small like the actual game, with just a basic fort that spawns peons. Peons automatically gather resources that give your side a boost if they bring in enough stuff. Make it for 10 characters a side between levels 10-20 or something. And let people go at it and try to destroy the enemy fort. The next battle is for lvl20-30, each side has a 15 character limit, and put a small guard tower in the middle. Since the game itself is fun, I would think this kind of thing would be as popular as beer at a baseball game. Plus it would train people for the big battles just like Warcraft did. I think if WoW had that, I'd be there in a second, and nobody would be talking about leaving. For one thing, rolling an alt would actually have a purpose.
That's my idea of a Warcraft World (all due respect to Blizz). Make them instanced if that's easier and lets more people fight. And I realize cross faction raiding happens, but that's not Warcraft. That's standard MMO PvP stuff, and it sounds pretty stupid. Warcraft is what's supposed to happen in Battlegrounds, but apparently no place else.
There are long dungeon crawls and some huge raid bosses and - WTF? Raids? Where's that in Warcraft? Why did a Warcraft World ship with raid bosses and zero battles? It's just fecking sacrilege. But like I said, I'm a total outsider so my opinion counts for squat. But I wonder what the players think. Will Battlegrounds be what WoW is about? Do you think you will be gearing your character up for it? Do you feel like you're gearing up for it now?

I'm not planning to touch battelgrounds personally. Of course this is someone that played DAoC for six months and never set foot in the RvR areas, so I'm probably not your typical online gamer
I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.
lol you seem to be operating under the assumption that once Blizzard implements battlegrounds (don't hold your breath for that one), they will be able to keep the servers up for more than 10 minutes at a time.
Linux is free.....if your time costs nothing.
For me the battlegrounds will play a big part in keeping the game fun. I played on a PvE server, but i really enjoy PvP although only when i feel like PvP-ing. I hate all the ganking and people generally trying to win unfair battles to give them some kind of strange plessure out of it which is why i went on the PvE. Now there is still a nice amount of PvP on the PvE servers but it would be nice to have a zone where anyone who goes into it has to PvP, a zone just for fighting rather then having quests in too which are impossable to finnish without getting killed about 10 times. The battle grounds seems to be able to provide all this and more giving us something to really fight about (due to the instances in them with the best loot in the game). I am currently lvl 42 so i only hope they manage to get it into the game soon after i hit 60 to give me something to do.
So to answer your questing i think for me the battlegrounds may indeed be the soul of the game and i hope to see many big battles raging within them (with me in the middle of course).
I've got a small Idea, Haven't read all the posts on this thread so if it's been said I'm sorry.
How about zones where there are like ongoing ''battles'', not battlegrounds, but just a zone where there are like 100 npc's, 50 of each faction. If you want you could join in, just fight. Not as complicated as battlegrounds, just pure slaughter
There is a lack in battle in WoW, I mean there are city raids and such, but then the server crashes for most people with slower conections. Also, as known, battle grounds will be comming, I'm waiting for it!
grtz.

Schiznea, the thing you are talking about are battlegrounds, just not instanced.
Battlegrounds will be instanced for one very important reason - to avoid zerging. There will be population limit on each battleground and therefore another queues - kind of ridiculous when Blizz decides to add another queues, but without them battlegrounds would completely fail.
They will probably have multiple instances of battleground at the start and it will work since there's separate server for instances.
I know this isnt the same thing that th OP was talking about but, Blizzard said they where going to release a patch in where there will be faction controlled towers and graveyards (alot like in BG) in the normal everyday world. So theres something to look foward to.

Hail to the King, baby.
No, they're instanced.
Look what I found in the Matrix section by our "brave hunter"
jackman11118:
i switched over to linenoise, enumerator wont let me log in anymore. but, enumerator was pretty gay, zion own everything there. machinists have to hide in fear after level 16 becuase there just plain isnt enough people.
LOL, I wouldn't be worried about lag in battlefields if I were you. It's more likely you'd be found hiding from the Easter bunny in Goldshire.
personally i cant wait for battlegrounds, currently i have a lvl 60 warrior (alliance sigh) with awesome gear (really), and am only gearing up for pvp. If battlegrounds isn't all its being hyped up for im going to cancel my subscription...
however for the most part when blizzard tries to release a finished product it really is kickass, and im anticipating a wonderful pvp battleground experience where i will destroy countless horde
Normal server Cluster: had to run a world
Instance server: had to run just the instances.
See the difference? do you ever lag in instances (when they works)? no. you don't. cause instead of many tousands players, the server works just for a 100 or so.

Hey there buddy, no need to call me an idiot. .
To answer the OP question I don't think BG will be the soul of WoW. It will be a lot of fun, but it won't replace pve and non-instanced pvp(with honor system and adjustments over time) as the core of the game.
Not sure if I am right or not but isn't battlegrounds just a glorifed "arena" (land mass) that is instanced with a set amount of players to be allowed?
If that is the case how long til even that gets boring. When I played DAoC I had alot of epic and large scale battles that were not instanced or planned (when we had to defend something). Was alot of fun, when I was grinding some levels and then hearing on guildchat that we were under seige by Hibs and to report to the frontiers to defend our lands. Can't really do that in an instanced zone where everything is spoon fed for you.
True .. in fact... an instance is a good place to hide when servers have hick ups ... I remember doing Maraudon once and watching all my friends drop one after the other on the outside. I was glad to be in there!
I think Battlegrounds is going to be awesome... I am really looking forward to it! But I see it as a bonus not as a solution to boredom. I think the people who are waiting for BG to decide whether or not to jet will end up leaving anyway shortly after ...
