No, it is still kicking. Its population goes up after content releases and down after the content is consumed, but it has a decent amount of regulars.  Anyway, at that price it is a good bargain for a month of online gaming for people who likes super hero games.

I wouldn't even buy it for that much, it's so dry and boring.

I spent 99.9% of my time just making characters rather than playing the actual game.

Always lots of people on when I'm on. *shrugs*

I did something stupid and resubbed to the game a couple weeks ago.  I started a new character, and there were literally only 5 people in the crisis zone,  once i got to the open world I rarely saw another person in canada. Logged into my other character and MC was the same.  Didn't see a bunch of people when I was running around.

None of that bothered me though,  what did bother me is the combat still felt stale to me.  Should've resubbed to CoH instead.

    Define lots.

Last time i played it was a struggle to even get 3 people into a pvp match (not including the newb matches).

What time are you people logging in?   From about 5pm PST to 12am PST, i see lots of people running around.

The game is not dead.  I have recently re-subbed and though it is low I still see about 2-3 instances of each area with about 45 per instance.  Not what it was like but not devoid of people.

I do not PvP in the game so I cannot make any comments towards Kabaal's issue.

The game is more of a casual gamers dream.  It is easy to pick up and run and you do not need to have a group to finish most content.  You can turn up the difficulty if you get in a group to make it more challenging.

In its current state I would not recommend it for someone who has lots of time to play and wants a lot of depth to their game.  This is farily 2 dimensional with lots of diversity in character creation and power sets.

I am using it as a filler until FFXIV comes out.  Nothing more.

I think the low pop on this game is going to get lower when DC universe releases as well.

That all depends on whether it's any good or not. I recall the same thing being said on the CoH forums and ingame when CO was due out, most went and tried it for a bit then went back to CoH, myself included.

If DCU is good both games may be in trouble though as they both have quite low populations.

A twinge of me thinks unfortunately not but I don't play so really can't say,  what I can say though is I've played a few times on the trial but it is just plain terrible to me and I couldn't get into it in anyway shape or form but obviously with it being the trial there are always tons of people on.

What you might really want to consider though is with DCUO coming soon, two marvel games, and COH which imo is a far better game than Championsthis games days may in fact be numbered especially since Cryptic has already pulled the plug on games before.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Cryptic have not pulled the plug on any of their games.  All are still going (i.e. CoH, CO and STO).  Although CoH is now owned outright by NCSoft, with nothing to do with Cryptic anymore.

While CO did take a major hit, following the state is was in (mainly) due to the launch day patch, it started to bounce back following the launch of Revelations and there's still a constant influx of new (or returning) players.  The game is still very much niche, but it by no means lack players.  Generally the improvements they've made since have also been extremely well received, by the player base.

A good chunk of these new people seem to be coming from CoH, which has been dieing for some time.  That's unlikely to change even with Going Rogue, simply because its fundamently dated in comparison.  Unlike STO, Cryptic have actually been putting a real effort into improving it.  DCU is likely to have a major impact, even if its short lived.  However as time goes by I personnally very much doubt its not going to have a lasting impact.

If DC and ToR are any good, its gonna be a tough 2011 for Cryptic.

If SW:ToR is any good, it won't just be a bad year for Cryptic.

To be honest its not going to take much, for 2011 to be a bad year for them anyway.

I always saw quite a few people (at least 2 full instances of each zone, usually 4 near full zones of MC) on whenever I was on when I was resubbed. Always buzzing in MC and the desert, Canada had players, and a good amount, but not as many as MC or the dessert. The game actually felt really healthy, population wise to me. It just got boring for me again.

If it isn't dead now, it sure will be soon. I seriously doubt CO has the cojones to compete with upcomming superhero MMO offerings.

  • dougmysticeydougmysticey Member Posts: 1,176

CO is definately not dead. A while back it was not uncommon for there to only be 1 instance running but lately there have been 2-3 at least in each zone. They have added a lot of conent so there is plenty to do.

This weekend with the anniversary Destroids attacked M city and made it all the way to Ren Center ( The center of the city and major hub). There were easily 30-50 heroes in that area fighting the mega destroids in the instance I was in. Plus there were attacks all over the city and heroes seem to be enganged with each one I passed.

If anything I would say it has picked up a lot. I can always find a group and I always see other heroes adventuring wherever I go.

Will it survive DCUO- I have no idea but that game looks darn good right now.

So that equates to roughly 1600 players in MC alone. Thats not too bad at all.

If it's not dead right now it will be shortly after DCU's release in January.
