Darkfall: Tasos Flambouras Dousing the Flames

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Earlier this week, MMORPG.com's own Paragus revealed a community-based Darkfall developer Q&A on his blog, Paragus Rants. In it, Aventurine devs answered some 57 questions about the game and its upcoming (and delayed) expansion. As with many things Darkfall, flames erupted on the official forums with fans claiming the development team was being evasive in their answers and may have avoided some topics completely. Tasos Flambouras, in a post nearly as long as the Q&A has weighed in on the controversy.

Before taking on some of the more specific content issues, Flambouras had this to say about how Aventurine goes about revealing information:

The problem we faced with the questions asked is that they were mostly about topics we cannot discuss yet and that’s why it took us a while to deliver it. Rather than to not respond or to avoid answering most of them, we decided out of respect for the community to address every single question as best as we could. Some people mention that Syncaine’s recent posts about his visit to Aventurine are more informative than the community QA. A part of it was because through the interaction with us he was able to ask the right questions.

Before I go into the content within the Q&A, I have to explain that when we say that we’re looking into something, or considering, or have plans for, it doesn’t mean that we’re being evasive or diplomatic in our answers. If that was our intention, we simply wouldn’t answer. It means that we’re trying to give you actual insight or confirmation on what we can’t go into detail about. These statements are supported by a sequence of events that has taken place at Aventurine involving a number of Darkfall developers doing real work, a lot of planning and meetings taking place, infrastructure being designed and implemented, testing, documentation, community feedback taken into consideration, player feedback, support tickets, bug reports etc. depending on what we’re talking about. There’s a professional pipeline in place. Even when we say there are no plans for something, like an alliance bank for example, the process has still run its course and we’ve decided against it.

When we post something about upcoming features publicly, anything, it gets multiple authorizations before it goes out and there’s nothing informal about it. The specific QA replies were collaboration between Claus Grovdal, and Kjetil Helland and myself.

There is a whole lot more to read on the Darkfall forums, so be sure to head there and put on your specs.

Yeah Paragus, what's wrong with you man? Don't you know Tasos only answers the "right" questions? You know, the ones he approves of.

Yeah this almost makes me want to resub.  Now if only theyd take some kind of action against ARAC clans, not to outlaw them, but to make it more of the exception and not the norm.

I would resub in a heartbeat.

I agree, that would be a fantastic change. Other than for lore and aesthetics what's the point in having all of those races, we might as well all be human.

I have to admit I only read this article/thread because I wanted to see how Tasos was dousing flames isntead of pouring gasoline on them as has bene his usual style 8P.

Some of the stuff proposed seems interesting though.Regardless aobut how peopel feel about Tasos,Aventurine or DF at least they are trying to improve and grow their game in interesting ways unlike say what Cryptic does with their games heh.

Aventurine are 5657575 times the company Cryptic are, and I say that as a non subber.

made me excited for this expansion and DF 2010 again, very good save from tasos.

This.  Unfortunately the devs have said the current alignment system is adequate.

So there won't be any changes in this regard which is really really unfortunate.

Which has as much to do with the game's quality as with the fact most of MMOs' players would rage quit just after any DF player would loot their dirty rags and a goblin dropped sword.

Darkfall shows that you can make a game like that and have it sorta of work. The problem is the game itself is of a very poor quality. Just imagine if a real company made a similar game.

It is not lack of quality which worries my about DF ( have you ever played MO ? THAT's what I call lack of quality image ). It is simply lack of content. The game is shallow, which is a shame as it could be a great sandbox.

My sentiments exactly.  Though it's the skill system that led me to quit the beta.

I'm not playing DF but as a potential subscriber i'm keeping a close eye on what's going on there. Reading Tasos post on the DF forums about all the changes they are making i must say i'm impressed. They plan to change or improve a hell lot of stuff for a game that's only out for one and a half year. UI, classes, races, pvp aspects, enviroment and other core stuff. Nice to see a developer constantly working on its product.

However, i'm a bit sceptical about if all these changes are going to work as intended. I'm not aware of Aventurine's financial and manpower assets but from my understanding they are a small company. Anyway, i'm going to wait for all the changes to go live and then i'll decide if i buy DF.

I am not sure about  said changes, heard similar stories from this guy before...think I will wait and see what really comes out.

Cryptic does not run COH anymore.  Pretty sure if they did you would be paying 20.00 to look like superman.

Not sure why cryptic went the way they did.  If they quit trying to sell their MMO like bad used car salesman they could actually play in the big leagues of MMO.

  • gothagotha Member UncommonPosts: 1,074

DF is never gonna be the eve type sandbox a lot of people want it to be.  It seems to have firmly decided it is gonna be a Semi Sandbox Strong FFA PvP game.

If a sandbox element of the game in any way conflicts with the FFA PvP they will get rid of it.  Its the path they choose.

This will never happen.  Same thing happened with Shadowbane.  Its either live with it or move on.  Its not like the many other games out there are the same way.  Hell, you can even swtich sides if you use RL cash on some of them.  Darkfall is the exception not the rule.

Let's just say Paragus could have put more effort into researching and care in selecting the right questions.  But we can't beat him up too much, he is a volunteer and not a professional, doing the best he can.

I think Tasos has done an outstanding job here -- honest, forthright.  OK, maybe not what some wanted to hear but he did delineate specifics about the game in a very logical, concise, well thought out manner ... that bit about "waves on the ocean" and certain other specifics  made me want to actually play Darkfall -- and that's a first for me.

Cryptic may be slow but they are doing the same thing. They'll get their EVENTUALLY just like Adventurine.
