I hated FF11 but I have high hopes for 14

vtravivtravi Member UncommonPosts: 400

Now to be honest i only played FF11 for about a week and that was about 2 years ago and the game was very dated, even then. I hated the fact that i couldn't tell if an npc had a quest for me and I had to to search these hudge towns and talk to everyone to see if there were any quests. The opening area was very boring and just didn't give me the feeling that i wanted to invest any time in this game.

But all that i am reading about 14 sounds great. I love the idea of crafting classes, I am a big crafter and don't mind grinding mats all day. I love that it will be a game designed for group play (my MMO of choice LOTRO seems to be putting less and less group play, even making old group quests now soloable).

The reason i am writing this is cause i keep hearing ppl say if you like FF11 you will like FF14 and if you didn't like 11 or won't like 14. I really hope that is not true. I already preordered the CE. Since it have almost been a full year since and new update from LOTRO. I have been play wow,and i feel dirty, lol. FF14 Save me!!

Not sure if it's wise to play the "sequel" to a game you disliked to begin with, some of the core mechanics you had problems with are likely to be similar.

But oh well, wish you luck :P

I think preorder is a bad idea since you didnt like 11. Better to wait till after release.

So far they seem similar , yet diferent .Nobady can really tell how will be at release apart from the lite bits its shown on the beta. The battle and the quest system is similar to 11, and the dificulty in general from 11 so far it feels similar as well. There is barely any grouping on the beta so cant talk about that eighter, besides that so far, is very solo friendly.

In Everythin else is a new game really, but since the thins you mentioned you hated from 11 are indeed on 14 this game probably wont be good for you.

You probably should not buy this game. It's almost a clone to FF 11. NPCs will still not have the ! and ? signs above their heads.

However, if all you're going to do is craft, I guess it won't be so bad. Maybe. Who knows.

Its a bit too soon to say what its going to be like.

Well, the game in general is shaping up to be more accessible than FFXI was for starters.  The crafting system is virtually guaranteed to be far superior to FFXI's since they are treating crafting and combat classes as equals in FFXIX (and frankly, it wouldn't take much to improve on FFXI's).  Guildleves (quests) are going to be available in centralized locations - like a guild board or such, so there won't be any talking to random NPCs for it.  I think you should give it a shot.

Crafting is also active too, as in you do more than press a button and wait for a combine.  Check the videos on youtube of some of harvesting disciplines out.

Maybe you should wait for a buddy pass given that you didn't like some of the elements of 11?

Not really. There's more than enough videos and leaks out to know if you didn't like XI, you won't like XIV.

If you "hated" your epic two week stay in XI, you'll hate XIV just as quickly.

No giant exclamation points or motion capture electric slide in this game, sorry.

As much as they are trying to modernize their formula and make it more accessible they have said multiple times that they are making a sequel to FFXI, and they are making a game for their fans and not to steal subs from other games.  It is a game that is a true sequel to FFXI.  If you hated it that much you may want to stay away, but if you hated it for certain aspects maybe they will be changed in a way that you like.  The only thing you can do is look for info on the parts that you hated and see if they altered it.

I can say I loved FFXI, and it has been my favorite MMO.  I spent over 5 years off and on playing FFXI, and I couldn't be more satisfied with how FFXIV is shaping up and not selling out to try to capture the WoW crowd with another crap clone.  I had to leave FFXI because I got married, got a 9-5, and had a baby.  It is like FFXIV is being made just for my situation where I need more casual and accessibility.  I am glad to see it looks like it will still cater to the hardcores as well.

Well thx for all the responses, i am used to playing a  Wow clone (Lotro), i think that is why i didn't like 11 cause it wasn't easy to just jump in and and lvl quick. But this time around the main difference is that I am desperate for a game to play, so even if I am not crazy about it at the start I am gonna give it a good go for a couple of months, something i didn't do with 11.

    Hello, there.

FFXIV is made to be way more solo "able" than FFXI never was, it's almost as it was part of the game design from the beginning, SE really knew what was wrong with new players on their former online game to not "repeat" the same "picture".

Some gameplay mechanics like, let's say "guildleves" quests rewards enough casuals players so they have not to suffer from being unable to spend lot of time into crafting and making money to get basic but helping "stuff"...

SE learned enough about FFXI, and they made that new game way easier to "solo" and also, reward a lot of "kind" of gameplay, from solo, small group to group, or "raids"... even "map" exploration in certain "ways" is truly rewarded, but i can't tell you "how" or more or i'll get out of rules...

    -Sorry if there's bad english-

If you hated that you had to search these huge towns and talk to everyone to see if there were any quests, and thought the opening area was boring. You most likly will not like FFXIV.

It will still be less solo-able than other modern MMO's of the genre. It can be done, but grouping is exponentially more fun and encouraged.

The greatest issue SE learned about was to avoid making the grouping mechanics so damn strict and unconventional. It is much more casual to group this time.

Im on the same boat as OP. Well, I didnt pre-order as I havent seen anything that tells me I wont hate this game as well. Especially now that the bar has been raised. All ive seen so far are guildleve's which just sound boring. They did say the focus on this sequel was going to be more on story and character development, but I dont see it yet. I get the feeling the best we can hope for as far as story goes is maybe a couple quests every few levels.

So far, all ive seen is a prettier FFXI but with guildleve's instead of the "grind till you drop." Not good enough IMO, which sucks, I was really hopeing for a good FF MMO that was deserving of the same name as most of their single player versions. Not counting it out yet but not expecting much right now.

Still not very happy with the combat ive seen either but its probably something I can get used to.

You do realize this is a limited Beta, right? You do realize that you won't see the best part of FF until launch, the story and character development, right?

  • HyanmenHyanmen Member UncommonPosts: 5,357

The GuildLeve system means there can be -anything- included, which makes it a pretty funny statement that they sound boring.

Maybe expecting to kill dragons and save the world at level 1 on your first tutorial Leve sounds a bit far-fetched, but maybe my expectations are just lower, I guess?

And? My point still stands. There has been nothing to tell me otherwise. Not in beta footage, and its barely even mentioned in interviews. If they want to keep the "best part of their game" under wraps so much where people dont even know how big a part of the game it is thats their problem. They either suck at promoting or there really isnt much of it to speak of or show.

For now, all they've shown me is a pretty game with guildleve grind and sluggish combat. Only promising thing ive seen so far is the beginning sequence. Thats not enough as its barely representative of what we've seen of the rest of the game.

Rofl, they don't need to promote beyond stating "New FF game launching in September" the pedigree of the name is marketing unto itself. Either way, your loss.

If somebody cant stand FFXI I couldnt recomend FFXIV to them. The devs said their target audience is FFXI fans.

If blizzard devs said that their target audience is WoW fans for the next mmo, I would know right off that I should steer clear of that MMO.

I really can't see anyone that disliked FFXI loving FFXIV.  There are enough similarities between the two that might cause a repeat opinion.  Yes, they have made changes, they have opened the door to an easier leveling system, but the game is still quite similar.  Don't get me wrong, I am very excited to play this but I also don't want people coming in to it with unrealistic expectations.
