NcSoft Account Security Stinks

AmatheAmathe Member LegendaryPosts: 7,630

I have an NcSoft account.  I had it briefly for the 2 weeks I played CO.  (Years ago I had another one for CoH, but that was tied to an old and now defunct e-mail).

So now I'm getting spammed by phishing e-mails telling me they have evidence my Aion account was used in some nefarious way.  I've never played Aion.

My e-mail is not information the spammers got from some third party site because I never gave my e-mail to any third party site. They got it from NcSoft.

That really ticks me off.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

I had 2 CE accounts hacked about 2 months after i quit then i go to play again a month ago and they were banned.  I check out billing history and someone used a gamecard to play on them for  1 month then they got banned.   Not only were the aion game accounts hacked but the master accounts were hacked changed passwords and all keep in mind one of these accounts goes back to 2004 ish.    Took me a month to convince NCSoft they were hacked and i just decided to not play again even after they activated the accounts.

I have been playing NCSOFT games since '04 and it hasnt happened to me once.  I havent played wow in YEARS and have a mailbox filled with scam emails about wow.  It happens, its not just AION or WoW and honestly there isnt much blizz or ncsoft can do about some random hack who sends out blind emails hoping to nail the 1 in 1,000 fool dumb enough to fall for this crap.  But to sit there and start a thread calling NCSOFT out about something that is a blight upon the ENTIRE MMO industry is kind of ignorant and childish.  Just, IMO guy.

I have been playing MMOs since '99.  Never been hacked once.  You can try and blame the game companies for your accounts being hacked, but they are in the business of protecting their "assets."  Your account, and all related account information is an "asset" to a game company.  They would seek to protect it just the same way McDonalds seeks to protect the cash in its stores registers.  In short, I am blaming you for your account being hacked.  Protect your account info, do not give it out to anyone, change your pw often, and be 100% sure your PC is protected and secure, Firewall, AV, Anti-spyware, and use a secured browser tool like McAfee offers for free.  Dont use the email associated with your game account for registering at gaming sites etc and DO NOT FALL for random BS scams.

Follow these steps and like me, you will NEVER get hacked.  NCSOFT does not want customers, PAST, PRESENT, NOR FUTURES acct info hacked.  ACCOUNTS are the MAIN Source of revenue for an MMO company.  To think, suggest, or imply they are slack in securing this "asset" is not an intelligent stance to take.  You look silly saying things like this.  Especially to a vet MMO gamer like me, who has played MANY, MANY, MMOS, and has never had any of them hacked.

I have been playing MMOs since 00 , i have played tons of them, p2p , f2p , name one game and I have probably played it at one point. I ve never ever had any of my accounts hacked except my AION account, like the guy u just quoted I quit the game, and got hacked 2 months after, search the forums here, its full of ppl claiming the same, they quit, 1-2 months later they get hacked, if you think we all had trojans or shared our account details fine for you, I know I will never ever play a NCsoft game again. Have fun

I had 2 Aion accounts.  One on my wife's NCSoft account and one on mine.

Both accounts are tied to my email address.

About a month after we quit playing her account got hacked.  She also has a bunch of other games tied to that account so we spent 2 weeks fighting with NCSoft to get the account back.  Basically they want every key code you've ever used to register a game before they'll give it back.

I finally convinced them that I was who I said I was and we got control of her account back.  Changed the password to something super secure.  Used numbers, letters, symbols, no keyboard patterns and it was 16 characters long.

The password reset was done on my computer.

All of our game accounts are tied to 1 email address and I'm the only one that checks it, she doesn't even know the password.

Her normal email address has never received any gaming related spam mail.

I checked and rechecked her computer for infections.  Ran multiple virus/spyware scanners and I run Kaspersky IS on all our computers with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware.

Manually checked for rootkits and analyzed the boot log to see if anything was starting up that shouldn't be.

I found absolutely no signs of infections on her computer.

Just for good measure I checked mine too and found nothing.

About 3 weeks ago her NCSoft account was hacked again.  Past resetting the password the account was never logged into in those few months from the first hack to the 2nd.

She has game accounts for LOTRO, WoW, AoC, Vanguard, FFXI, and tons of F2P games.  None of them have ever been hacked, only the Aion account, and only hers.  Not mine.

    Something's off there.

We might not be playing Guild Wars 2 simply because of NCSoft's horrible account system.

They make it so easy to change your personal info if you have the password, but near impossible to get your account back if you don't.

You can change everything in an NCSoft account.  Reigistered name, email, password, security questions, credit card, etc.  so if you don't have your boxes any more, good luck getting your account back.

We didn't even bother trying to recover it the 2nd time after all the hastle the first time.

    fake e-mail. ignore it

  • ArezonArezon Member UncommonPosts: 282

I've also received those fake emails.

I haven't played Aion or any NCSoft game in a while. I tried to log into my account and can't. I click on Forgot Your Password and I have to answer my secret questions which I don't remember the answers to. So you have to go to their support site and submit a question. The problem is they want account name which is fine, but they also want all the game key codes for my account and last four numbers of my credit card I used for the account. Now, I wouldn't have a problem with this but their Support site is not even secure. So there is no way I'm am submitting a question with all that info to a site that is not even secure. I'll have to live with not playing any NCSoft games.
