TERA: The Exiled Realm of Arborea: Interview With Senior Producer Brian Knox

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

MMORPG.com's Garrett Fuller had the chance recently to sit down with En Masse Senior Producer Brian Knox. They had the chance to talk about TERA and its PvP component, solo play and characteristics of the player archetypes.

Is the Priest the only healing class? Will other classes get boosts of healing to support themselves if the Priest goes down in a fight?

Mystics are also healers, so they can assist priests and even serve as the main healer for a party. Every class has the ability to use a few "get out of jail" cards or even some potions that can restore health up to 50 percent, so there are definitely ways for the other classes to stay alive if the party's healer is taken out. When comparing TERA to other MMOs, the healing system is radically different. Healers in TERA need to move and remain active, and they must always be aware of not only their allies’ health but of their location on the battlefield.

An MMO featuring glyphs, battlegrounds and achivements, that's unheard of....

Also interested in Tera, the combat looks good.  But I share the same concerns, will there be any depth otherwise?

i hope they dont use any kind of rng on crafting or combat i hate lucky statistics stuff, and its better to have no craft at all than gear or consumables > skill on combats

Since we can choose where to hit the monsters, will the monsters have a weak spot that we can target? Anyone got an answer for this?

this game has many simulatites to other mmorpgs but it also has its differences so i think this game will do very well.  no i dont know sorry

Just to clear some things up regarding the first question. They have also mentioned Battlegrounds will have pick up skirmishes as well as the guilds he mentioned here. It wont just be guilds.

To answer a few others in the comments. From what ive read in interviews and FGT player comments:

"Not sure what is meant by rewarding exploration but the world it looking huge so far. Many places to see and the all look as amazing as you'd expect from these games."

"They havent really said much about crafting only that the gear you make there will be comparable, but still lesser quality than what you get in group content."

"IMO there is plenty of depth, im not sure what else is there to do other than "whack a mole" in MMO's but either way there is plently. The various PvP, there is pently of questing (or so they say), crafting, a player run political system, housing, etc"

"Theyve said gear will help in your combat as much as any game (though hopefully not as much as WoW) but because of the nature of how the combat mechanics work, a good player will have a much better advantage."

"Weak spots, I dont know. I think they have mentioned something like that but I think its more about a mob getting hurt more if it misses a big attack, or you do a particular ability at a certain time. Take this with a grain of salt though."

I think the game will do very well. If they play their cards right it can be the next big hit, even overcoming that "korean grinder" stereotype.

Tera looks great but lets hear about some things other than the combat. I am still waiting on info on the Political System that the game promises to have.

  • alakramalakram Member UncommonPosts: 2,301

Game looks good enought, as always still need to wait for a free trial or open beta.

i think this game gonna be good as any other p2p game. but we will see everything bout it when the game will be launch.

  • ScotScot Member LegendaryPosts: 24,439

Interesting to see what the battlegrounds are like, keeps and castles, trench warfare, grab the flag?

  • HoliceHolice Member UncommonPosts: 116

I think the action combat will really make or break this game. Definitely want to try and sample it as soon as possible to get a feel for the combat.

This is the same jack ass that over-hyped AION as if it was the second coming of Jesus Christ, no thanks I will stay the fuck away.

"With TERA's action combat system, PvP skills will truly separate the n00b from the 1337."

I'd really like to know if it was Knox or Fuller who decided to put this abomination in the first answer of an interview.  Whoever is to blame should be sentenced to playing runescape for life.

Tera will still be in a class by it self. There is nonthing comming thats anything like it. Its an action mmo thats main focus is on combat. There is not much information out right now but the game will be quest based with mounts, crafting, pvp and pve servers. It will have a unique pet system called Homuncilus and it will also have a political system thats supposed to be a big part of the game. You want info about the game try the official site or Terafans.com Dont say shallow combat sim if you have never played it. Teamwork and movement will play a big part in the combat of Tera. You will actually have to take time and practice and learn to play your character.  Rift looks good but still its nonthing I see really special about it at all. Here is a small wiki from Tera fans with some info.

at least Brian Knox knew to jump ship when Aion was going down hill, so I might try TERA just for that.

  • DragonsBeRedDragonsBeRed Member Posts: 5

From what I've seen this looks like a very unique mmo, it's action based so obviously the focus will be the combat, which looks and sounds pretty cool at this point, and the political syetem interests me greatly. IMO there hasn't really been one mmo with an excellent player-run political system. If anyone can name one I want to play it lol

Big Red Dragons. Doesnt get much better than that.

So you have played it? Or just going off the press releases? Because from all I have seen, the combat is great but I have not see a single thing thats outside of combat which makes it shallow if you have nothing else to do.

I am going by the little information thats available just like everybody else. Do you think they are lying?  What do you mean nonthing else to do? I just listed some other things the game will have. I just dont understand what you want to hear. You are the one that called the game shallow but I bet you have not spent 1 minute looking for any kind of info on the game and I just gave you a link to a small Tera Wiki page. You want to know more about the game then go and look it up but dont down the game when your clearly know nonthing about it.

I can point to any number of games lately that have released all kinds of juicy details on their new ground breaking game to find out it was a hollowed out dead tree.  So do I trust all the press releases and news leaked out by the devs especially from a guy who made Aion sound like the second coming of the christ? Not a chance.

If you arent going to belive anything said about the game then why ask for information?image

Yep, thats exactly what those priests want us to do - to have faith in their god and pay them church tithes. So, unless NDA is up, all of this info isnt creditable.

    IZI MODO?! Ha-ha-ha!

    Meh, we'll see...

to be really honest, I have played all sorts of mmo; and asian mmo has never stood out to be anything spectacular other than their focus on the visual component.

Aion was a huge disappointment for me; I thought it was going to be a game that can compete in the western mmo market, but it turned out to be a game that should have been f2p.

TERA's marketing and hype is very similar in ways of Aion; obviously I hope the game turn out to be awesome. However, in case of what's being shown; I want to see what PVE has in store.
