If this game wasn't star wars..........

    But it is ....

Yes one thing we know is that this game is using the Star Wars Franchise....

And Secondly we know it is being developed by one of if not the best Game Developers in the Industry...

Indisputable facts so where is this thread leading ?

Plus I really like the emphasis on storyline and the features they have announced so far. The fact that its Star Wars is just an added bonus.

Pretty much sums up my feelings too.  I'll be giving it a try at launch.  And until then I will remain objective about the game and only judge what we HAVE been told, not what we haven't been told.

Unlike the OP who, like others, feel the incessant need to scream at the world about how something will fail based on very little facts and a lot of biased opinion, purely because they crave the attention.  Just like a spoilt little child who doesn't know when to shut up.  "Look at me mummy!! Look at me!!!"

Run along and play in your sandbox (game) OP, and let the grown ups talk amoungst themselves.

the way I see it that devs dont care if the players are Star Wars fans, and by looking to the gameplay videos, it's obvious Bioware wants an MMO that can compete with WoW. The major selling points of TOR are green lightsabers, red lightsabers and blue lightsabers. This MMO will be WoW with lightsabers.

Because all MMO's are WoW right? If all you got from gameplay videos was Green, red and blue lightsabers you must of followed a wrong link.

The major selling point of TOR is deepened storytelling, something that is totally not like WoW, so why don't you get your head out of the sand and start reading and using your brain more so you understand what info has been revealed.

We don't know much regarding this game, yes, it has similarities to WoW but that doesn't make it a WoW clone but an MMO, and lets be honest here, WoW is the 500lb gorilla in the room.

Bioware is a company that is known for devceloping succesful games, every game they release is a success, the only 2 companies with such track record and amazing quality are Bioware and Blizzard.  I find it silly thay people say WoW is a bad game, I played it for a while, not playing it right now but how can someone say it is a bad game with the sucess it has,

A star Wars IP and a company like Bioware do give certain guarantees of an engaging game, especially when we saw what they did in KOTOR.   It is hard to separate the SW theme form this mmo because a  very important part of a game is the setting, so if the setting is not good the game, no matter how good the gamplay is, it will fail.

I dont care what anyone says theres way too many idiotic ideas being thrown around on that forum which is reinforcing the devs self deluded view that this game will be remotely good.

Lucas arts, giving bioware the job for this mmo was a bad idea.. They should stick to single player games. They barely did those right imo.. No im no t a fan of bioware games by any means.. I have played never winter nights, and kotor series.. They were ok games but only a success because the market was so dry and starving for ANYTHING star wars people bought it and played it..

People at those forums seem to be giving out the worst ideas for this game and supporting the worst ideas we know are being implemented. I can't believe we're going to see another star wars game fail so hard 3 months after the single player gamers finally realize the game they supported so hard is boring to them.

Cloning wow is fail right off the bat. Im sorry but that game sucks hard..Its a kids game. Stroy driven mmo's will never work.. This is not a single player game bioware.. wake up..

I see a 150 million dollar failure incoming..

/cool story bro +1 epic post..

Then don't play it. Spare us your fear mongering. Trust me, all of us will be just fine.

Any game that inspires this much rage is worth checking out. This is the first outright attack on BioWare's ability to make a single player game.

I am looking forward to this one, I don't know if its going to be a good one or not, but I'm willing to let the dice roll.

If it is good I'll play it.  I'm no fan of the old republic era of starwars but a good game is a good game.  And nothing is a "wow clone".  Wow is the clone.

I don't see any Dune influence in Star Wars at all. Both works are quite far apart in content and scope. Star Wars has more in common with Kurosawa films than Dune, and Kurosawa films generally take place in medieval Japan, not outer space.

Star Wars was originally based on Buck Rogers and was planned to be a weekly series,  which it will be soon with a new series that takes place between episodes 3 and 4 that will be live action and on fox.  :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_live-action_TV_series

I do agree that if this wasn't Star Wars no one would care about this game. I really think that's true. However it IS Star Wars so that's the end of that discussion. For example I'm not a fan of WoW but if they took that game and skinned it with Final Fantasy or Tales of Symphonia or something then I'd probably play it. *shrug* that's the truth.

If this game wasn't starwars it'd still be an "ok" MMORPG but not nearly as interesting

  • paterahpaterah Member UncommonPosts: 578

If this game wasn't Star Wars or better...if there was no Star Wars franchise before this game to back it up I don't think this game would be half as popular. Actually my guess is 80% of the possible player base will be only the die hard fans of the franchise and with that being said I think the "Star Wars" name alone covers up for 80% of the whole game.

Although I'm a pretty big fan of Star Wars myself, I probably won't be playing the game, much less if there wasn't any history behind it.

I don't think the story-based MMO will work. Once you run out of story, what are you going to do? Run an alt? How many times? They will have to crank out content much more consistantly than a WoW or EQ yearly expansion pack. More linear gameplay, unless they sandbox it somehow. The closest comparison right now would be DDO at release. Do a series of dungeons and once you've completed them, go back and do them again. It's not going to work. Good for casuals, but retention subs will be poor after everyone has seen the story and are sitting there waiting for the next installment. I expect a F2P model where you just buy the next content. Probably a year or two after release.

I'm half expecting something similar really, Something like what Guild Wars did.  Bioware has pushed a few expansions and extra downloadable content for Dragon Age, something similar for this MMO could work if scaled up a bit in what is offered.

That said they seem to be really pushing a huge amount of content and story at launch, while it might be true that they need to to compete with the modern market it seems a little too in depth/complete an experience that they are aiming to launch with for them not to go with a subscription option.

With regards to the OP, I totally agree if it wasn't for the franchise that the game is set in I wouldn't be half as interested as I am.  While I admire BioWares work and the quality of games they make, I'm not a big fan of story driven games.  I like there to be lore, but I don't like it forced on me or for the pace of the game to be dictated by the story.  So I generally don't complete their games in the end as I move on, never bothered with either of the Mass Effect games although I tried the demo briefly... then went and made a new alt in an MMO instead.
