Did anyone here actually see the Aion vids before they were released?
How Aion was supposed to be a dynamic world and such? How class stigmas were sort of said to be interchangeable by classes? But when the game came out it was like, uh, where is this huge Colossus thing I saw in the vid rising out of the ground? Why are stigmas non-interchangeable by classes to offer a lot more variety? Why is this world extremely 'static' and lacking when it was preaching how your choices would ever change the world's outcome and be dynamic? LIES!
I'm really hoping this game picks up where that one failed at bringing and then some... From the looks of the vids, it does look like it's giving what other games promised... I like how there is no brainless nitwit (corporate tool) with tits talking about the game to get people to play it but the actual people in the dev team...
Just my 2 cents.. I will be trying this game if they hold to their promises...
Game looks extremely worth the investment to try...
What I miss about ideas behind games is that it's supposed to be in a Fantasy World for some.. But every fantasy world I've seen has things that are extremely frightening such as powerful wizards you wouldn't wanna mess with, goblins that you'd rather sneak around than bother, dragons huge and actually powerful like they supposed to be... I'd like to see dark creepy dungeons and weird alice in wonderland gone to hell kind of weirdness about it all.. This one does seem a little closer to that than most games I'm seeing coming out.. Like GW2... it's pretty.. There's really nothing creepy about it.. I almost wanna pet the mobs, not kill em...

The difference is that Aion is Korean, and Rift is American, therefor, they know what we want.
I don't have a problem with Korean games, I don't mind grind either... lol...
The graphics was nice and the gameplay was pretty smooth...
It just had bad PvP reward system and the instances were not progressive or hard really and the loot (RNG) system was a nightmare... Earning something is doing it a million times till your lucky to finally see it fall in that game while a new comer over here got something I've been trying to get for months on her first run..
S T U P I D !
They advertised the game with stuff that just wasn't there... The game feels very incomplete... But I liked the idea...
I think NCSoft West is the main culprit of it dying... Random bannings, horrible support, bugs still existing that have existed for months.. I have friends in my guild in the gaming business and they are even in shock how bad it's been...
No this game will not be anything like Aion at all. It is going to be more in the ballpark of EQ with some decent PvP because they got some guys from DAoC and WAR on their team.
I compare it to those other games because that is how people generally rate a new game coming out. Oh it looks like this and it has elements of that. It will be a new game and IP all in itself.
I am pretty excited for it.
Did not say it would be like Aion.... Used Aion as example because of their marketing strategy...
Rift though HAS proved to a great degree that they have the content already in the game they are using for selling points... If you just look up any of the E3 vids of their booth, you will see they not kidding around.. If you look at the first post.. I just thought it's funny that Aion was marketed with the same ideas... A dynamic world, but it wasn't dynamic one bit... Classes that had variety in them but then once you play it.. They are more "cookie-cutter" than any other MMO out there... They showed all this stuff simply that wasn't in game... And even after the game is out, they were trying to coax people into staying by putting out a Vision (3.0? Unconfirmed) vid to show where they were trying to take the game... But it's still a long way off from that point... Whereas I do believe the game would have been great if it was released at that point... Far too incomplete and they are also taking too long to bring updates/fixes that bring it up to par with other MMOs... These days, you have to open up with a lot more..
I just found it interesting that Rift though is talking about the same elements Aion first was marketed using...
Although I highly doubt Trion will drop the ball like NCSoft did.. Just because I think this will be their baby MMO that will/can grow vastly in a shorter amount of time.. Whereas seems like other companies use a release to use that money on development of another game entirely with little funding to the game that got them the increased revenue...
I got a kick out of the directional arrows they talked quite a bit about in AION as being key to actual combat, supposedly making it more of a "sandbox" type combat system.
It was supposed to be "interactive" and not just hack/slash where if you moved foward you got attack bonuses and backwards you got defense bonuses. Sideways to parry and dodge/etc...
While you DO see the arrows pop up from time to time on the screen, it doesn't appear that they do much, or turn the tide of battle. I've tried tanking with Templar and moving back while holding the shield but doesn't seem to do any different than standing there with the shield. Same with attacks, tryied moving forward and attacking but didnt see to do any more damage. Least that I've noticed but perhaps others do notice a difference when the arrows pop up.
Devs put stuff in they hope will work but later end of scrapping or severly dumbing it down when it has kinks they can't fix, usually making it a shell of a feature.
"TO MICHAEL!"
Well, we don't have inside information. We can never know how it will all turn out until we can play the game. However:
I've read almost all Q&A's and seen most of the video media for Rift and the Trion people seem very careful in what features they promise. In fact several of them have stated that they do not assure something that is not set in stone to be in the game.
Oh and btw, I don't like how you titled the thread. It's a bit misleading.
I followed Aion pretty closely and I do not recall the word dynamic being used very often if at all. I do not believe they are advertising for the same things at all. Aion never boasted the class customizing that rift will have where you can mix and match from different classes. So not sure what you are getting at.
Who did they get from DAoC? that make me want the game even more if they are onboard. DAoC is the only MMO that kept my interest over a yr. Played DAoC for 5 yrs good memories.
What title of thread really isn't.. lol.. Can't recall how many I've read thinking was going to be about a certain thing that seems straight up and ends up being something else...
I think it's to the point though, just really left open.. for a reason..
Cause it is funny, this game preaches the same stuff of other games but yet I hope/pray this one actually delivers and so far from what I've been researching on it.. It seems they are going to do deliver just as their vids are showing...
Actually, that word was never used don't think if it was, it was rare... but it may have been.. But it did say the world would "Change" based on decisions you make in the game but there was nothing dynamic about it in the end... I don't think it used the word Dynamic but I remember the vid and can probably pull it up if you want me to find it.. Course, I can't remember who said it.. If it was Lani Blazier, then understandable.. She was about as knowledgeable as a random booth girl on the game yet she was the community manager in the beginning... I remember it distincly cause it was a selling point for me... The huge Colossus coming out of the ground was also.. But no signs of that in game either.. But if you look at the Visions video also.. Look at the artwork closely and you can tell nothing was actual in-game... I didn't pay attention too much to the first videos in that manner... I'd expect least some of it in game but it was wasn't...
The other point may have been my own mistake in interpretation but Lani also said something about stigmas... I remember it was a vid where she was in front of a projector and they were showing the game in action... She said something along the lines of the stigma being used by various classes or something to that effect.. So I thought basically that a stigma was some extra slots that would give you abilities of other classes... And it probably would have been way better that way.. I think I remember saying if you a glad and you wanted to use a heal spell, you can equip stigma or something.. But as you know, that never was the case in the game and stigmas offered nothing as far as variety...
It's sad.. the game had potential.. but with how things being ran lately it's another gonner...
I have personally not heard this... I've heard EQ, Warhammer and a slew of console devs were working on it... Never heard anything from DAoC.. But I wouldn't doubt it... The head guy said between all the team, there is a combination of like 27 MMOs background in it...

Just found this so EDIT:
This is on the Aion site: "Harness breathtaking powers to influence dynamic relationships that exist between graceful angels, fearsome demons, and mighty dragons. You will shape the future of Aion?"
Although I didn't follow Aion closely I don't remember a single instance of them ever mentioning dynamic anything. If anything the game looked like it was trying to copy a bit of the WoW formula with the typical Korean style gameplay. Wasn't disappointed when I finally got a chance to beta it, since it was exactly as I expected.
As far as that quote goes: "Harness breathtaking powers to influence dynamic relationships that exist between graceful angels, fearsome demons, and mighty dragons. You will shape the future of Aion?"
That's just a load of marketing nonsense. It's so vague and could mean anything. Was this listed as a feature? We already have videos of Rifts and concrete examples of it's implementation of dynamic content. There was never a video of Aion showing off what they are describing (if it even makes sense, because it sure doesn't to me).
Never a video showing that off.. I guess I'm just going to have to find it myself now.. lol... Damn, lol.. doesn't even matter but do know they said it that way.. I remember one of the narrators of the video said that decisions would change the outcome of many things in game.. Like if doing a quest will have a certain outcome or influence over something.. 3 Factions, one computer controlled, it sounded like something game-breaking... And the early vids do show lots of things happening that aren't in game at all.. Once again, the Colossus rising out of the ground.. (NOT the 3.0 Visions Vid.) In fact, I think they marketed it that way and probably knew that it didn't have enough to hold people over but they needed their funding for the other games so hyped it up outrageously...
The way you put it is right.. Dynamic relationships with the other faction because on my server they dominate atm by so many numbers so yeah, guess my relationship has turned dynamic from fun to hate...
I've been looking for the vid.. I know what the vid sort of entails because it was one of the first few vids avail to watch... It had narration in it as well.. But don't remember who.. It's pretty pointless but it did say something along the lines of the game changing with your decisions.. But nothing in the game changes with my decisions other than if whether I attack a PC or not to attack a PC... That's about all the dynamic you have... I've tried looking for it, I can't find half those vids anymore.. I pull up 100s of vids now, it's not like in the beginning where you do a search and you only pull up 4 or 5 vids... So not easy to find it... The Aion marketing was so blatently misleading... Everything was very vague and CG was used for the game vids... Not ACTUAL game footage.. So what you got out of the game was something totally different.. The game itself could be good with some fixes here and there and a balancing of the servers, but don't think it's going to happen.. Another dropped ball.. Might as well mark this one up there with Tabula Rasa...
I have good feelings about Rift though.. They been just a lot more honest and open and you can find a lot more info on the game than any supposed NCSoft game being released during the same period.. Even GW2 is limited info and supposedly a 2011 release... Blade & Soul has like 2 vids, maybe 3 and I don't even know if it was all CG... I could be.. Trust has been broken.. I might still try B&S still but I know many friends that won't touch another NCSoft game now after TR and Aion... And they don't blame the game, some fail some do ok.. it was the company how they handled it that was bad..
idk man like I mentioned before. I followed Aion pretty closely. I never expected any kind of changing world or relationship at all. The two main things they boasted was fun PvP especially with this third AI faction which could throw a curve ball into things and they claimed it would not be too grindy.
They failed at both of those. People in the west see that now and that is why US EU servers merged big time.
I remember watching a dev vid saying they wanted to steer away from the grind but the game was already out with the grind... lol
I played in China Beta and then retail china for like 6 mos before it ever hit the NA.. It wasn't bad then, but then again, it was a totally different country for the most part of gamers that didn't frown on grind... And the experience was highly different...
Come to the NA version.. The game took a dive into fail.. And why didn't I notice that in China? I don't know.. I mean the game did have a lot of elements missing but think the people made up for the losses... There was always something going on.. I never understood why they would do certain things but know why now and they did it as a group.. Usually an alliance of people would be out farming balaur stuff for hours... It was kind of boring at some points but it really wasn't a game for the US after seeing how playstyle is way different... If you look up the Korean servers, they still have 32 and most of them seem fairly balanced out.. So don't think the game is a total fail, it just failed in the NA somewhat... To many it still is a decent game, just nothing to jump hoops over... It does appeal to many of a different style gamer...
I personally been researching as much as I can on Rift.. There is tons of sites with lots of info already.. I already feel a larger campaign from the community than from the devs that Aion never had... I'm surprised Curse hasn't jumped on the bandwagon yet.. Which they did for Aion.. And they didn't even support things like addons... So Curse just turned into a huge troll forum which in some cases didn't help the game much...
I know Rift is trying to build community and changing the way rewards work but I hope they don't lose the spirit of competition though.. That's what makes me stay is that I still have something to defeat or something to overcome or guilds/legions I still wanna PvP.. So we'll see.. I'm definitely going to pick up the title.. it's one of the few I have some faith in lately...
The difference is, Aion was built around money sinks, RMT, and RNG.
Koreans like that shit, or are at least used to it, so that's why you see so many servers there. I recall playing Aion on the Chinese servers before NA went beta and having an option to purchase kinah(gold) along with my minutes.
Those things are usually not associated with a western game like Rift.
I think timesink is probably a bigger feature of eastern MMOs than moneysink (though the two can be linked. Currency is required to advance your character, therefore a moneysink slows progress down -> timesink)
I'm not sure why Koreans/Chinese/Japanese enjoy such repetitive gameplay. In western MMOs grind is more a symptom of lazy design and over-reliance on padding, but in eastern MMOs it's almost a core design feature. I'm unwilling to compare Rift:PoT to Aion for that reason: it's a western MMO and therefore Trion should know that they can't get away with just cloning the old "kill 10 rats" quest ad nauseam so they can knock off early for lunch. Koreans might lap it up, but Europe and NA certainly wont, especially since they'll be competing in a market already saturated with fantasy MMOs with similar quest designs like WoW.
That said, Trion could be stupid or just unambitious and decide to pad their game out in this way, satisfied with merely achieving adequate success. Judging from their videos and some of the more creative ideas they're implementing however, I'm inclined to say this won't be the case.
So far with what we know.. The rifts sound like a grind as well... I mean... Going around the world looking for tears in the surface and then fighting mosters that come through it seems very grindy... And this is said events that rewards you and all that helps...
hmmm..
I can't really comment much on it.. I haven't seen the game yet.. I will pick this up though.. I think just variety in the classes (souls) is going to keep me way interested than most games in that alone...
I remember how every says WoW wasn't a grind but I still remember doing that Molten Core for almost 8 months trying to finish my gear as all I saw was druid stuff... 8 months of the same 2-4 hour dungeon (depending on how geared your raid was) and only able to do it once a week with your char.. That was pretty grindy to me...
i don't remember AION ever mentioning dynamic antyhing, it was pretty clear to me the game was a straight grinder with similar gameplay to EQ2 / WoW / LoTRO / Vanguard. I was a bit mislead by the graphics and some of the huge mobs in the videos. They were very well spliced together with gameplay, so it was impossible to tell that they were cinematic pieces or parts of background graphics rather than actual interactive mobs. This threw me off, but gameplay wise, it turned out to be exactly what i expected.
i can't say that i expect a lot better out of RIFT, but i do think their gameplay videos actually show gameplay. I also believe they actually will have dynamic content, however, how well this will work will depend on the rest of game and how much dynamic stuff there is and how it integrates into other parts of the game. I'm a huge proponent of dynamic content, so that alone makes me interested enough to check it out. I don't expect it to be an earth-shattering change in the genre though.

I think people blew the PvPvE concept completely out of proportion, took the "dynamic NPC Balaur" only in the Abyss as NCSoft stating all content would infact be dynamic, constantly changing world. If you didn't read into it so much it was plain to see they weren't promising anything similar to dynamic content how Rift and Guild Wars 2 is aiming to. And before you get all bent out of shape, it has been stated all the content in Rift will not be dynamic. You'll still have your traditional gameplay/questing elements.
The only thing that I found misleading concerning Aion was when I jumped into the foreign clients and actually got into the game the first time, the world was way more linear than I had imagined and had put together from clips and such I had seen.
It seems that NCwest also misled people about the 3rd npc controlled faction during the beta as well. They kept talking about how the balaur would be a wild card faction that would randomly apear at various points in the world and cause havoc, which during the beta they did. It gave everyone the impression that not only would elyos and asmodians be utilizing the rifts to give each other a hard time, but so would the AI balaur race, similar to what they are showing us with Rift. Not only were the balaur randomly seen wandering around in patrol groups in the 2 player factions areas, but at the end of the beta they had an army of them invade the cities and your faction had to drive them off. Funny how as soon as the beta was over that all stopped.
