How can I make my pc better for ffxiv?

hi.. please be nice I am kind of computer ignorent :/

I read in a few threads about computer set ups and things.

I took the ffxiv benchmark just now and scored 2950.. which is not a good score.

How can I improve my computer?

here are my specs--

windows7 64bit

8gb ram

nvidia 9800 gt 512mb

nvidia 650sli mobo

Intel dual core 3.0ghz

650w power

My mobo has dual card capabilities.... and I have a 9600gt 512mb and a 9800gt 512mv card. Would it be beneficial to dual my cards? Would it help improve my performance? Or is there something else I should upgrade instead?

If i left out any info please let me know.. thank you.....:)

How much is your budget for upgrading? everything you listed is pretty decent, all that you'd need to upgrade is the video card

    around 300$ i'd go with a GTX 470 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121372&cm_re=GTX_470-_-14-121-372-_-Product

Get the GTX 460 or better and you'll be good to go!  Unless you drop another 1k into it and buy a new MB & CPU too you're not gonna break 5000+ on the benchmark.  Very few are and those PC specs I've seen are expensive and severely overclocked.

On a budget a GTS 250 may pull it off, with that sort of score though I'd wait and see your right at the maybe problem but most likely not line.

Do you happen to have a Dell XPS 630i system?

If so, and you got those results, then damn you did a lot better than me lol.

I was one of those unlucky fellows who got the 630i whose PCI-Express x16 was essentially neutered to a x8. Oh yeah, and it's only PCI-Express 1.0. So I'm already working with a handicapped system.

But anyway... about your question. On SE's scale, 2950 is at the high end of "Standard", which isn't bad at all. Where the benchmark is concerned, it's not great, but it's not sucky either.

Also keep in mind that the benchmark is not a good representation of how the game will run on your system. I would guess you'll be able to kick the settings a bit higher than "standard" and still run the game smoothly with that overall score.

Currently in Beta, I'm running on the above setup, an Intel Core2 Duo E8200 (the one they have for minimum requirements), and a 9500GT (bargain gaming card I had to get as a temporary fix when my 8800GT died on me). Technically, I have everything against me on my current setup and shouldn't even be able to *play* the game, according to the benchmark results. My score on low settings was 820 (after NVidia's latest drivers, it went up to 920-ish). Yet, in-game I get around 15-18 FPS in most city areas. I get upwards of 20 or so in countryside areas, and in some spots have hit 30. That's on a crappy, out-dated, neutered and gimped setup. It's sluggish, but it's playable. And even on the almost lowest settings, in its current state, XIV looks quite good.

Luckily, a new card comes tomorrow or Tuesday, and I'll be upgrading in a big way (Mobo, CPU, RAM) hopefully within the month or so.

That said, I think you'll find the game quite playable - and quite good looking - with that setup.

As for improvements? I'd say get a more up to date video card, say a 200 or 400 series NVidia card. Go for at least the mid-line gaming cards, if not the enthusiast line. Don't go for the budget ones, they're weaker than I'd have even believed 'til I got one. My 9500GT is noticeably slower than my old 8800GT. The NVidia GTX460 is a very nice card for the price tag; $200-240 or so depending on if you get the 768MB or 1Gig version.

    Either way... Enjoy!

As mentioned your PC is fine to play FFXIV and have it look good. SE wants the game to still look okay in a few years, and most people aren't going to be able to hit their definition of high without investing some serious cash into a rig. Besides, it's not like you have Geforce 8600M GS like me.

GTs 250???? Hell he may aswell just keep the card he has. I say go for the 5770 or the 460 or something along those lines.. definately go with the 460 though.

If you did get an ati I would get a 5850 or something.

thanks a lot for everyone's input.

I would love a 450 card. Swooon..~ (hint, my birthday is soon? :D)

I am going to try to sell the 9600....

my pc is actually custom built.. I built it in 2008 as a present to myself for college.. :)

It's been a great computer. I have never had any game issues until I began playing the sims 3.... my computer doesn't handle it as well now as it did, say.. a year ago when ts3 was first released.

So I guess it is just getting tired and old.. if I had $1500 lying around I would built a brand new pc from scratch.

But thanks for everyone's input. I am super super excited for ff14.. I loved ffxi and I miss it (my account got stolen and sold to gilsellers in December :(

if it was at all possible to upgrade that processor to a quad core or something, that would be better...

    Ouch ><

May I recommend getting a security token as well? If you don't get the collector's edition (which includes one), you can buy the security token separately from their website. That will go a very long way in keeping your account secure - even if someone tries to steal it.

In my opinion, with how aggressively RMT are trying to compromise people's information and steal their accounts lately, no one should be caught without one if they have the choice. So far it seems only Blizzard and SE offer them.

Yes I am definitely putting a security token on my account. I bought the collector's edition too :)

I fought with SE for weeks.. months. They got so many types of ID from me over and over. Finally I offered some urine and blood but they said that wasn't necessary, yet they still never managed to recover my account. I finally gave up... when I heard ffxiv's release date!

It will be fun to start fresh..I just miss my character and my friends. And the asshat that stole my account sold my one and only truelove chocolate that I had signed! The only one I ever made! JERK!

LMAO! Did you actually say that? That is classic! Well played.

Fortunately, I've never had to go that in-depth with them about anything in my time playing XI. Worst thing in my case was a billing discrepancy... and I was actually wrong in that case :-p.

I agree 100% about starting fresh.  That period of time when you're brand-new to a MMO, know very little about it and everything is new and strange and unfamiliar is one of my favorite experiences. I'm especially excited about starting over in a new FF MMO. Though I can't help but carry memories I had of starting out in FFXI and how chaotic/confusing/awesome that was.. I'm doing my best to approach FFXIV just as I did with XI... without having any expectations other than to take in everything I experience as it comes. In terms of playstyle, I'm an "Adventurer" to the core.

I'll often tell brand-new players of FFXI that I envy them, because they're getting to experience Vana'diel for the first time, through the eyes of a truly brand-new player... something I could never do again, even if I started in a  different nation. Some of my favorite memories could *only* have happened as a new player, because being clueless was so much a part of them.

Lol yes I did, I sent them about 4 copies of my driver license and proof of my credit card and pictures of my ffxi booklets and cds and cd cases, all of it was notarized.

Finally in the end I told them I wanted to ban the account to prevent unauthorized access. So now the only way it can be accessed is with more copies of ID

Yeah that was just the budget option, if by off chance it doesn't work, u can pick those things up for like 100 bucks, and it'll prolly run it fine.

I feel your pain too on trying to deal with stolen/hacked account, I lost mine just before they offered authenticators (some flash vulnerability through FFXIAH or something like that), and they were brutal  to deal with.

One thing that will give you hope, the people we were dealing with were POL, not SE directly. POL has absolutely nothing to do with XIV, SE will be taking care of it directly, still now that u can get em, authenticator ftw.
