D&D MMO - NWN Online - by Cryptic & Atari , rumoured

LobotomistLobotomist Member EpicPosts: 5,981

It seems that next quick exploit MMO by Cryptic is set on its way.

Neverwinter Nights Online based on D&D ruleset.

"It seems a new day may soon dawn for Atari's Neverwinter series of Dungeons & Dragons games, as superannuation expands upon a Gen Con 2010: D&D New Products Seminar article on Critical Hits with a cryptic mention saying: "Atari has an announcement coming about some kind of D&D video game but they couldn’t talk about it here." They offer a bunch of domains they've sleuthed out that likely relate to this, which are visitneverwinter.com, neverwinter-game.com, neverwintergame.com, play-neverwinter.com, playneverwinter.com, save-neverwinter.com, and saveneverwinter.com."

As much as I love D&D and really wanted to see NWN MMO , I can only laugh thinking on previous Cryptic MMOs created in record time and with minimal resources in attempt to create quick buck from loyal fanbase : STO and Heroes

Now the same fate awaits another D&D attempt on MMO :(

Doomed to fail again in hands of scammers Cryptic & Atari.

There is really no luck for D&D franchise in MMO world :( ....

And after this it will probably never be given another chance.

Though it apparently isn't to your likeing, DDO is doing quite well. No real need for another D&D based MMO.

If they narrowed it down to say Sigil or the Forgotten Realms near Baldur's Gate(which I'm sure most people would just love to play) as a main city and the surrounding areas. Yes that would work. But again would they create every single class, race, back story, etc for the game? Doubtful. They are gonna go with the most effective path money wise. Not to mention most would just call this a WoW clone anyway.

Considering D&D is the catalyst for RPGs and Adventure based games/MMO's. Interesting to see how things have been influenced and developed over time. You would be better off playing the already released D&D games then sitting around putting your faith into such things. Enjoy what you have now, instead of waiting for nothing.

When did you start playing "old school" MMO's. World Of Warcraft?

I don't really want to see anything new based on the D&D ruleset... For the next, say, seven and a half years.

And if there is I'll just plug my ears and go "LALALALALALALALALA."

Hm, I wonder if this will be based on the 4e ruleset as the 4e NWN book is coming out later this year...

Real life brings repetition and pointlessness too. The only thing real life offers is Great graphics. Its kinda expensive too and way to dependent on the cash shop. Totally pay to win as well. No thank you. Ill stick to my games.

So basically, Cryptic is going to come along and piss all over the Neverwinter franchise? What a disappointment. I dont want to see another half-arsed shoddy excuse for an MMO coming from that developer.

    My sentiments exactly.

    This is just a shame.

    WTF? No subscription fee?

Is someone finally going to stop Cryptic and their shenanigans?

Please dont let this be a Cryptic MMO... :(

Atari and Cryptic are the biggest fails in this industry and nothing good can come out of it.

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Maybe they will declare bankruptcy before they manage to get the game out the door?

A someones who's first MMO was NWN (see profile pic), I can't express into words how saddened I am that Cryptic has anything to do with an NWN online.

I love when people say a game or a companys fails, just because you not like it doesn't mean its fail.

STO has plenty of subs and well and Champions, I have played both and admit they are lacking but the game itself was good, both of them, they just are lacking content in time they would be better if they would add stuff faster, that I admit but both are good games, and both run good better than alot of games at release.

Crypitc games both have alot of subs check xfire, and xfire is a guide of what subs are at, so people that do not us xfire would be alot more, so trust me they both have alot of subs so they are far from fail...

They is only a few games that went off line and failed so when people say fail that makes me laugh IRL, as there still making money, so I like to know what games didn't fail? WOW I think WOW is doing a bad job and looking to go offline one day or lose alot more subs. Just because they are going in teh wrong direction, I pefer a game that is hard and I like a game that when I fights something when I die PVE, PVP i,m on my toes that  I could lose something...

Alot of big companys are making easy games to make alot of money, you know why?? Because alot of gamers can;t handle hard, quests and PVP where you lose loot... They get to upset, alot of gamers also like to cheat and have there hand held....

So I like games where alot of indies are making , they  do not have a huge community but they all have a good communitys .. They also have good games, they last good game but a big name company was Asheron call and that was back in 99, the rest of good games, they I like are all indies...

I do like cryptic games though better than any other big named companys.. So the point i,m getting across just because it doesn't have 1 million subs doesn't mean they fail or because you do not like it...

If you do not liek cryptic games its simple do not buy them. I can't stand NCsoft because they have poor secruity, so guess what I do not buy them...

Oh and atari is so fail they been around for 40 yrs, and have so much money its sick, they have always bailed other smaller companys  out like fallen earth and so forth but there so fail...

They made one of the first consoles... and the best one back then I must add...but thats way before your time... ATari is s fail though ...give me a break.

I didn't see in the OP where it said the game would be an MMO. Did an rticle elsewhere state that?

Nice reaction! Can't really understand it though. Cryptic tried something that they weren't really capable of. Maybe they thought that people didn't care about content, and just made two games without it. But this time, they might just take their time and focus on what they're doing. They might, really might...really really...I'm not delusional!!

NWN was the game that got me into online-gaming, and the only game that has held my attention for nearly a decade. I'm not in anyway expecting that this new release could ever be the way NWN 1 or 2 have been as online games. It's the user created content that makes those games great, so in some way I don't find myself interested in this project, might keep an eye on it, but more than likely won't be playing. Not because it's Cryptic, but because I got the feeling that it's not going to be that different from other MMOs. There's not going to be permadeath, there's not going to be "forced" roleplaying. There's only going to be heck of a lot more players. Of course I can't know what they're up to, but the first thoughts are that it wouldn't work as a massive.

Not tonight dear...I have a haddock!

    I vote for Forgotten Realms.

Eberron does indeed suck, and although it has a lot of fans, I really do not like Dragon Lance.

Eberron sounds good on  paper, a Steampunk version of D&D, and I do like the Steampunk genre in general, but mixed with D&D it just kind of sucks.

DragonLance or Planescape. I dont think I could stand another Pools of Radiance game.

Woot!  Greyhawk!  That brings back some old school RP'ing days for me.  Yep Greyhawk would get my vote for a new D&D MMO setting.

Speaking of "old school", hey eagle is the picture of your avatar from an old Players Handbook of the Thieves class?

I don't care where it's set, Cryptic is going to give us another empty world.

NWN is one of my favorite games of all time, and to put it in there hands just makes my stomach curdle.

I love Champions Online so i would definitely give NWN a try even though i am not a very big fan of fantasy genre. Final Fantasy and CO are the only two MMOs i have ever played because of the sci-fi elements.

Well, I knew that Atari was playing around with the D&D franchise again after hearing that was allegedly one of the reasons why they didn't do a good job at marketing DDO in Europe (see claims made in Turbines law suit against Atari).

And considering that I've yet to see any Cryptic game that was anything more than a superfiscial and shallow representation of what it should be, this rumour doesn't fill me with excitement.

That is exactly what they count on.

Every lame game they pushed was based on initial premise "Maybe this time they may really do it good"

So they build game that is all about first few hours , masking huge unfinished mess after it. And bang the bucks on preorder and lifetime subscriptions, from naives they sucker in.

    As for D&D MMO's

DDO is really really good. But its set in Ebberon. Which is not setting we fans really indentify with. And its twitch action based instead strategic turn based like gameplay D&D is.

DDO basicaly failed as MMO - showing investors D&D is not good setting for investment (until F2P DDO turned it around)

Now they are about to make another D&D mmo fail.

This will mean end D&D mmos forever

Good to see fellow old schoolers in this thread.  Love the old D&D picture for the thief class and the Gold Box NWNAOL cleric pc icon.

I must concur with most of the posters, please dont let cryptic make a Forgotten Fealms MMO.

D&D, the thing that taught me what the word antipathy was in 2nd grade, deserves better.

Gary Gyax and Dave Arneson are turning over in their graves.  RIP TSR.

And to the person who said they could never play another pool of radiance, did you really open that box, put those disks in your C64 in 1988?

I thought Cryptic sead they won't do another well known IP for thier next MMO.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.
