Alot of mmo's outhere have got great potencial. I know from my point of view that Warhammer Online looked very promising. I followed it for about a year before launch. About the same time, Age of Conan were on it way aswell.
I remember that my concerns for AoC was that it would end up beeing just beautiful and no more... WAR was the game that was going to make it! Going to be this big success. The estimated sold copys approximately around 1M would increase over time!
2-3 million subs wasn't impossible to reach within a year or two, cause this game had it all..........
Well, not only the game I did not believe in(AoC) nor the game I had so much expectations for(WAR) didn't delivered but there were alot of others aswell. Maybe on of yours?
Now, ofcourse a game can be economically just fine with 100-300k! Thats for sure! But here we're talking about those games the some of us really thought had the chance to make it into over atleast 1.000.000 consisting subscribers but just didn't make it and you regret that you ever followed thru the development!

Probably WAR and AoC as well, given how hyped they were.
Darkfall and Mortal Online
I got into both AoC and WAR as well when they came out. Both dropped with a resounding thud. Between the two, I was most disappointed with AoC the most. The Hype was strong with that one, and it's failure catastrophic.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." (First Lieutenant Clifton B. Cates, US Marine Corps, Soissons, 19 July 1918)
Well I don't know about how many subs they could have had but I definitely regret following the original Horizons and Shadowbane. That was a lot of wasted time.
By the time WAR and AoC rolled around I had already learned not to follow games anymore.
Definitely WAR.
So many interesting dev videos and documentation and art, and then the game came out.
I played for a day trying to force myself to like it.
Uninstalled the next day and felt like an ass because my poor mother got it for me as a gift.
WAR.
Mythic creating it. EA backing it with the cash reserves. The great backstory/lore that is Warhammer. Good artwork. I really expected Mythic to take everything good from DAoC and incorporate it here. Instead, we get arena PvP, tacked on open world PvP and aimless PvE all running on a god awful engine. The artwork is the only thing they got right and it was fantastic.
I can't say that I wish I never followed through with WAR or AoC because to say that I didn't have any fun in either would be a lie. Sure, they had parts about them that were disappointing but condemning them is just stupid.
I am still confused by all the WAR hype myself. I guess people just wanted it to be good so badly that they turned a blind eye to what was actually being produced. When I tried it out I couldn't believe the low quality of the animations, or the dullness of the PVE action. Fortunately I didn't buy the game, and this just served to strengthen my resolve to never purchace a game without a free trial or open beta first. I have no faith in hype anymore, it's hands-on or no sale.
I do followed Aion and WAR. AOC is impressive too. Too bad. The didn't work out very well.

WAR. I feel physical pain when i think i gave Mythic some of my hard earned money...
WAR. Seems to be a common theme here too. Sounded so good, but it got old fast.
I always thought the game mechanics of AoC and Darkfall, were flawed. Just reading them on paper, I thought, this sounds like crap, nothing I would want to play.
And, I was right.
WAR on the other hand I thought would be teh successor to one of my favorite games, Dark Age of Camelot. A revamped version of RvR! Awesome!
But no, they managed to screw up RvR with horrible quest grinding, and instanced combat.
Warhammer-online
Lord of the rings online
Auto Assault : sort of carmageddon-online but had to close due to lack of players and bugs that never got fixed from day1 till the end.
MO and DF.. I still think MO will be great though, thanks to SV. They listen to the players and fix stuff as soon as they can, unlike most developers that really dont give a fox. Im gonna give em a month or 2 more to make the game more stable and get rid of some bugs, then Ill take my bucket and shovel to the box.
I'm also throwing my vote in for Warhammer Online, what a horrible game that turned out to be. But the one that makes me the most annoyed is Champions Online. Champions is one of the best PnP systems there is, then Cryptic came along and made an absolute mess of it. Missing stats, numbers that didn't make sense, lacking powers, limited customization. I suppose I was being hopeful that they'd make a decent Champions game, given the complexity of the system, but still.. they didn't have to mess it up that bad!
Darkfall - 8yrs of development for a Medieval MMOFPS with a huge grind. I followed it pretty hard for the first 2 or 3 years, then forgot about it completely until it was released.
Fallen Earth - I didn't really follow it per-say, but I had been looking forward to it since 2006 when it was first shown at E3.
Middle Earth Online - I followed it pretty hard, up until it sold off and became LoTRO. Once that happened, all the things that were thought about and were talked about in MEO were completely out the window.
WoW - I thought the game would be bad and would fail when the info was first released, because of what happened to SWG in the very beginning. Then around a few months before it was actually released, I started following it pretty hard. It looked like it was really well done and almost complete. It wasn't. WoW Vanilla was junk and was the most basic MMO I had ever touched, all those people who like to say that Vanilla was the good ol' days of WoW are absolutely out of their minds, it's probably the first MMO they had ever played and didn't know any better. I played a Barbie game once on a PS1 and after I had gotten past the initial 'awe', I can remember thinking back to that Barbie game being more complicated. It wasn't until TBC that they started adding things that really should have been in the game when it was launched..... they kind of were actually, just half assed done.
I can't see why people were let down by WAR. To me, from the first time I first saw a screenshot of the Dwarf character, the game looked pretty fail to me and from then on I quite paying attention to it completely. Funny thing is though, I actually did end up buying it shortly after release. Played for about a week and haven't touched it since. lol
And there was just something about AoC just never got me, I've never cared about that game even to this day. I honestly don't even think I've seen a video on the gameplay.

The one I regretted the most was Aion. So much so it made me prejudice against Korean MMO's for quite a while. Then TERA showed up, which I passed off at first but now cant wait. My prejudice is only with NCSoft games now, though im still pretty pessimistic with my initial views on Korean MMO's. But Aion I loved. I played a friends beta and loved it. I was almost sure it was the next big hit, then it just sucked. The devs flat out lied to its customers, and id even bet they still are with the upcoming 2.0's features. The PvP was all about ganking or getting ganked (which they said was optional). The PvE leveling I loved during my first 15 levels in beta completely stopped cold turkey at around 25.
WAR, I never bought. I knew it would suck the moment I tried it in beta. I ended up buying it anyway because it was cheap and I was bored but I knew what I was getting into back then.
Then there is AoC. I loved the Tortage missions. I thought I found my new home. But eventually you leave Tortage and it all goes downhill. Aquilonia looked plain aweful, and bored me to death. There were bugs galore, pretty bad grinding, worhtless gear ... even the combat system got a little old. .......... in the end though I dont regret buying this one. The new expansion is actually pretty good and though there are still quite a few bugs here and there, the game is a great placeholder until TERA, or maybe even Cataclysm. Playing this one from a fresh start now and im actually enjoying it.
Aion. Game was totally hyped around flying combat and then pulled my chair out from under me with flight only in a few zones. Also, there were no builds, everyone was the same. Stigmas only gave you two options per class. It was like a cheap f2p. Mass PvP was good though in the zone where you could fly (for a minute or two!!! grrrr).
"Never met a pack of humans that were any different. Look at the idiots that get elected every couple of years. You really consider those guys more mature than us? The only difference between us and them is, when they gank some noobs and take their stuff, the noobs actually die." - Madimorga
I would have to say it's a toss up between Aion and WAR. I didn't follow them super long, but I believed that they were going to be on the lines of DAoC with a UI facelift, current features and better graphics.
For me Darkfall and MO
MO I think has a chance to succeed and fail quiclky depending on a few things. Darkfall is plodding along. . maybe in the right direction but the change isn't quick enough for me.
MO was the one I followed the longest which makes it the most dissapointing. The recent patches seem to be fast and furious with great stuff being added. . so it all comes down to what breaks along the way or if the subs stay up enough to keep it live.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
I cant say that I regret following a game. Just keeping up with developement and other things for games is easy. Especially with all the MMO news sites out there. I have a lot of info from games I'm not interested in at all because it pops up in the same place as games I am interested in.
I do however regret buying some games and investing time in some. The one that stands out the most is Darkfall, Aventurine is such scum I wish I had never supported them with a single penny. The gameplay itself boiled down to about 20 hours of grind per 1 hour of fun. Other games include buying the CE for AoC which was a regret at the time but resulted in a full refund from my CC provider. And most recently I was in the APB beta which just felt like a huge waste of time, mainly because I watched a game I thought I would love be completely neglected and screwed by its developers. Maybe 5% of the concerns brought up in beta were addressed before they pushed the game out the door. It seems like they spent most of their time wasting money on hype for the game and going to conventions rather then listening to beta testers and actually giving a damn.
To end on a not so negative note, one game I rather enjoyed following has been MO. I see a lot of people listing it as a regret, however, the honesty and openess from Starvault while quite unproffesional at times has been such a refreshing experience after Aventurine's lies and scam of a game. I pre-ordered MO knowing full well what I was buying and what to expect and it was no surprise when thats exactly what I got. People can complain about MO all they want, I don't even play it as you cannot play potential, but I think everyone in the industry can do with a bit more openess and honesty. Instead of over hyping games for box sales, honest down to earth facts that will attract and retain long term players would be a nice change of pace. After all isn't that the point of marketing an MMO? Player retention, not initial sales.
Aion hands down, it was like I was paying for a free mmo. It was the first Mmo that i got bored of in under 10 minutes.
I though War was fun but felt it could have been so much more, and well AoC was only fun the first 20 lvls, then the whole night and day thing died and you started to see it was just a bad mmo in a good starting zone.

I was following Warhammer when Climax were making it and was really looking forward to trying it out. The only scenes I can find now are from early development, such as this little video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkQvPQJ1_Dk
I saw a later screenshot of a Skaven in a shadowy environment, with those 'old world' style buildings in the background and I had to wipe some drool off the keyboard. It looked awesome. I would have loved to have seen the completed version, I think it could have been awesome. They were talking of having a lot of the careers from the original PnP game too, albeit with a vague archetype system (Warrior, Academic, Rogue, etc). I imagine it would have been a lot better than the junk Mythic came out with.
When I heard Mythic were taking over I sort of stopped following it, but assumed they were just taking over from where Climax had left off, so was really interested in trying out the finished product. I of course later found out that it was a completely different game with cartoon graphics and a PvP focus. I tried it but was so disappointed when I think back to what could have been.
I did not follow AoC or WAR, really, and when I tried each of them, I thought they were OK. I liked WAR's public quests, and it was at least more fun than LOTRO (for me). I had some graphical glitches with AoC, but otherwise, it seemed like an ok game.
I am wondering now if the the hype wasn't part of their downfall. Perhaps people were expecting significantly different games from the ones they got, so they were bitterly disappointed. On the other hand, if they'd had no expectations and were trying the game out, maybe it wouldn't have been so bad.
I also wonder if the fact that I basically know nothing about the source material helps. I can't be disappointed with how Warhammer or Conan are interpreted because I know NOTHING about Warhammer, except what I gather from my son, who plays the game with the miniatures and some RTS games... and I am not sure on the RTS end if that's Warhammer or something else. My entire knowledge of Conan is from movies made in the 80's. Sketchy at best.
I guess if I had to pick a regret following, it would be Vanguard. I couldn't even plan on playing at release because the computer I was using it at the time flatly wouldn't run it. It just seemed to come down to one bungle after another, and now SOE seems to be trying to kill it.
I waited for years, and years for Star Trek Online.
I was ripe with excitement every step of the way. I absolutely could.. not.. wait..
I followed every piece of information that was out there over the years, and although I saw the signs of disappointment, I was convinced that they would make this game good enough for me to have a new home for many years to come.
By 2 weeks after launch, I had my lifetime sub refunded, and never went back. It's pretty funny actually... The game I had the most anticipation for ever, turned out to be a piece of garbage that facilitated my shortest stay in any MMO ever.
I am ashamed to have ever installed that.... game, on my PC.
