I was thinking why not have a MMORPG that has this unique feature.

Basically this idea comes from reading up on guild wars 2 and the low level time to reach max level.

Why not just make it so you are max level at character creation. The developers make the level cap whatever they want, for instance level 70.

This is where the unique feature comes into play. When you die in PVE or PVP you lose experience. Since you start at level 70 losing experience by any death will drop you to level 69. But the experience lost is less in PVP vs PVE death.

Having a system where it forces you to be good and brings back that feeling of watch your back that mmorpg lack today. Remember back when EQ first started up and you were paranoid of death. Well similar experience can be done here.

You die you lose experience, you need to kill in PVE to gain back the experience to level again or through PVP.

Lets add on these ideas also since we are here. You start at level 70 but the same as above except you also start out with 0 to your skills. So you must fight PVE to gain experience to buy skill points to raise skills up. This means everyone is at 70 but there is still work to be done.

I like this idea of backwards leveling. Make it challenging enough so that you don't take unecessary risks.

So you still want to work for skills but start at max level?  thank you for describing darkfall's system... how is that working for them?

Darkfall is a bad analogy, since you are still weak until you get said skills (and stats, mind you) - they might as well be levels.

Being maxed level and doing all the AP quests in Fallen Earth is closer to what the OP is getting at, and that sucks balls. Everyone knew it was better for your mental health to just clear all the AP you can in S1 before moving on, because coming back at level 45 just for the extra AP is maddening.

The legion of casual players going backwards would be funny to watch but would ultimately doom your game.

Interesting, but theoretically you could get rid of the idea of levels entirely and give, perhaps, a mounting debuff and you could accomplish the same effect, more or less.

I would say what's to stop players from deleting their toons to get a clean max level char?  The answer of course is usually along the lines of some other form of character progression.

Here's the truth.  Progression is progression is progression.  How a character progresses is completely irrelevant, levels, gear, skills, or pokemon, etc.  The only things that matter are whether the game is fun, whether the progression appropriately distinguishes effort versus rewards, and whether it feels different or more of the same.

Starting at max level is no different than starting at level 1, or having no levels at all because there's going to be some other way to stagger player "levels" if you want an MMORPG.

I don't think so, I mean there is going to always be people on the net looking to be against someones idea no matter what, even if you have a great idea.

There is no reason casual players would be against this if they have to grind levels out in 99% the mmorpg market anyway. This is just opposite, you get max level start but you can lose levels. The difference over other games is you start at max level so you can use any items armors that have the requirements of such level.

And the last part my idea for skills is just another idea that most mmorpg lack, we just buy spells skills now instead of actually having to tweak our toons out where needed. Armor doesn't have to have all the stats it can be armor with stats requirements to use. Such as 50 str to equipe or something. I duno I just am sick of the same o' same o'.

Cause armor and items are bound to you, DUH!

Instant gratification, RPG games require a solid leveling system. The only time leveling is bad is when there is not any enjoyable(key word) content to play through while doing so.

Casual people of who are the vast majority of people out there would be against this because they quite frankly are not good at these games. A casual player grinding from lvl 1 has nothing to do with a casual player starting at max level and going backwards because he dies a lot. This is nothing but frustration in a genre where keeping players is one of the most difficult things. This is again one of those niche ideas that pleases a very small crowd and makes the game another statistic in the flop column.

OK so developers need to only build games towards all player styles? Come on you know better. GW-GW2 and for example Warhammer, Darkfall............These games are not intended for casual players, so this system is totally valid and therefore casual crap gamers can go play farmville, they ruin the fun in it.

GW PvE was boring as hell. Another poster already called it when he said something along the lines of "it only works if it's bypassing content people would tire of in the first place". Plus, it would be a mistake if GW2's content actually comes out decent this time and everyone is just skipping it.

Gratification is irrelevant because everyone feels gratified or happy for different reasons while enjoying their entertainment of choice. It could be getting a new item, farming a rare or whatever.

The least I would expect to be gratifying at any caliber would be leveling, because in the name of mmorpg's everyone has one. A level, big deal it is a number, most are happy for more reasons such as new shinny loots.

I dunno, so many poor comments and pro con discussions on these forums, is why I ignore them for awhile. It is hard cause most the base of players are so nearsighted and almost cliche speaking the same old comments. Not your comment but in general other people, it is harder to set your point when people fail to understand the whole of the idea or situation.

True but you can always go back to such content since we level fast a day or 2 to max then I am sure the content most of it would be geared for max level players anyway. They mentioned going to get loot you want off a certain mob, well it wont take forever.

Calling it instant gratification was a poor choice of words of my part. But I do believe in a solid leveling system with enjoyable content. I will always be drawn to that, so will the mass majority.
