There won't. SE has said there will be a final beta with lots of players, but not "open" in the traditional sense.

I just read that the deadline to enter the close beta is ending and after that open beta applications will be starting up.

Not that getting into beta means squat, if you are buying the game you dont need beta. Their arent fence sitters with this IP. Plus everything gets wiped for the preorder launch on the 22nd (yay for me).

I'm on the fence about getting FFXIV and getting in beta would help push me one way or the other. I have a dedicated 512mb 8600M GS in my laptop, and while that is below what has been posted as minimum requirements I still want to see for myself if it runs, and, if it does, is it at an acceptable rate. If it is then I'll get XIV to play with my friends, if it's not then I don't because I don't have the funds to get a new laptop or even build a new desktop.

Well if your below min requirements it wont play or wont play hardly at all. This is a high end game meant for longevity and high end rigs.  If you want a gist of what it plays like try FF11, its not too differant.

  • mrcalhoumrcalhou Member UncommonPosts: 1,444

Well, that's what I want to see. "It won't play hardly at all" is fairly subjective. I mean, it can play Crysis and Age of Conan and every other game that I have thrown at it. If I really can't tweak FFXIV so that it runs then fine, but I want to see for myself if it will run.

    I trust their twitter.

    Their twitter says this:

"The application period for the upcoming open beta on Windows® is also scheduled to commence in the near future."

And as they said before, it will not be full on, anyone can join, open beta. You'll have to apply and they'll mass invite, but not everyone and anyone. It is open, but not "open" as other companies generally do.

ZOMG a game company using beta for testing and not publicity! Shocking, how will all those peeps who play betas as a free trial and never bother playing again survive?

I'm just clarifying the situation. Sarcasm wasn't needed.

Seeing how it runs on systems, any system, is a form of testing--for both the company and the customer. Your elitist attitude is really uncalled for.

While their comment was uncalled for I dont see how it is elitist in any way.

On the other hand I too am a fence sitter and would like to get into a beta/free trial sort of thing before I buy the game....assuming I have nothing else going on at the time of release. I am way past the point I buy games based off of developer bullet points/hype. I like to see the reality of a game or browse through comments of people who have actually played the game before making my final decision.

And you think a beta is any better indicative for making a final decision?

If your on the fence buy the game, you get a free month to try it out. If you dont like it then it was no different then buying a non mmo game were you cant try it out. In the end you have tyo either buy it or not. Just the crying of I want free play is annoying. The system reqs are listed. If you dont have the recommended settings then you are running it on low, that is always the same no matter what game you are on.

Elitist probably wasn't the best term to use but it was also in refrence to other posts that was made in this thread by him, such as, "This is a high end game meant for longevity and high end rigs." I'm not ignoring that SE has stated that the game is being designed with the future in mind, but rather with the way this poster chose to phrase it. Like the person above me stated, sarcastic would probably have been the better word to use.

    @Hynamen:

By the time a game gets to the point where they are ready to have an open beta (or semi-exclusive "open" beta) then that means that the game is at release quality and aside from some slight tweaking and server optimization, it is essentially the way the game is going to handle and play at release.

I'm not so convinced of that, it could be.

I disagree totally, i'd like to play a trial/beta before i buy this game.

This day and age i've been burned to many times on mmo's that I only last a month in before I realize i don't like it.

I'd like to find out for myself the problems i may or may not have with the game.

from videos i've seen -- combat is slow as hell, and i'd also like to know how it will run on my comp. Both which would be answered with an open beta.

I'm not going to say that it WILL be the case either, but it has been in my experience that it's the rule rather than the exception. I would also like to point out that the release is about a month away, so, unless they push it back, there likely will not be any major system changes between now and then because that wouldn't give them enough time to polish, balance, and whatever needs to be done to get it working. That's not to say that they won't but I just think that it is unlikely.

    @ mmorpgcntrpt:

For starters the free month would be completely useless if the game doesn't even run. But it's not a question of if I will like the game or not. It's about will it run or not. I'm shallow enough that I'll play the game just because my friends are playing it. I will agree with you that there is no difference in buying a non-mmo and not liking it and buying an mmo and not liking it.

Look open beta can be a free trial situation but its not always that stress testing the servers also gos on around this time etc etc etc. But be realistic most use it as a free trial and yes it can sway some into playing the game but come on if you don't get in it get you dont get it and you just have to wait a few months (for free trial if at all possible), ask a friend who has it to let you play, or just read the reviews and see whats what. Beta or not I think enough folks have broke NDA for any1 who knows how to type in google to find  a wealth of info about the game. As far as the spec arguments go I am sorry guys but grow up if they give you a min spec expect it to be the MIn Spec. If you can upgrade you computer then save what you would have used to buy the game and pay the sub and join a year in. Its an MMO with a slightly tricky leveling system so being the first one to the top of the Im the highest level mountain wont mean as much as it does in other games. Look lots of folks know they are going to get it already they werent in beta they didnt get a bud to let them play they just want to play the next FF game. So if your not one of them then just be patient the wait will pay off. Because for all you know you love the way the game was at the beginning you were in beta and everthing and you hit endgame and it sucked. That has happened to alot of folks so sometimes waiting getting the info especially if your on the fence will save you time and money in the long run. Thats my 2 cents continue the arguments.

Open betas are pretty names for stress tests. While the client itself is almost complete with a few tweaks here and there, the client you play in open beta is the client that will be used for launch (with the debugging software running in the background that eats up your resources like a pig on crack.) The server load, however, may pose a problem and turn people off -- because they don't understand what stress testing is.
