Im looking for a newer game with open PvP and no restrictions.

What newer games are out or available beta to play that are open PvP with no restrictions? Many of the games I have looked at always have some stupid rule about killing somone. Im also looking for a time machine to go replay the glory days of shadowbane. :(

So pray tell, what happened to Shadowbane. How is it doing these days? :) :)

Shadowbane should be a good barometer of PvP. It is really amazing how the small group of people who truly enjoy PvP think they are the majority. Shadowbane was to be the biggest thing to hit the MMORPG world, when in fact it was a tiny fizzle. Get a clue ...... The majority do not like unrestricted PvP. We don't like it because it is not fun to be unable to explore freely without fear of some griefer coming up and trying to ruin your day.

If you want unrestricted PvP go play EQ on the Sullon Zek server. You can play there with the other 10 people that play on that server.

    Shadowbane is an ugly game.

Maybe you should use it as a barometer for ugly games, hm?

I enjoy unrestricted PvP, and I've never once considered subscribing to shadowbane.

Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

PvP is great it adds more depth to the game itself.Shadowbane BTW is alive and kicking.Virtually no lag(everygame has some doesnt it?).

Im one of those griefers you spoke of too. What game and server are you playing on?Id love to come and harrass ya.

Shadowbane has the most original vision of any game on the market.Guilds form nations and nations build cities.Cities are defended in all out war.L2 is a close 2nd imho. Are there ANY games out there that let a player play a true thief class and let you steal from other players?

The possibilities in Shadowbane are amazing.

    Want to ENJOY an mmo?

Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.

    Just play the damn game:)

SB would have been a great game, if the devs gave it a new engine before release. Sadly, it is like a VW bug trying to pull a semi trailor the engine is just to weak to support the weight..

i would never play an unrestricted pvp game unless it offered permadeath...u kill some noobs, some highbies come in slay your character, game over...guess what the noobs maybe lost a day of gameplay while u lost 3 months

like in the real world....i could kill cops while they are in a fire fight with someone else, well his buddies are gonna come gunning for me (and shoot to kill, not arrest)...if i beat up some 3 year old, his dad is gonna be looking to kick my ass...until there is consequences, unrestricted pvp is only for low self-esteem people that most likely fail in everything in life

There are not to many people that like PvP at all. I think its sad that all people want to do is play online games to farm gold and watch in game sunsets. I guess the younger GEN of gamers are all carebears and think that the best part of a MMORPG is standing in a populated game town showing off uber armor and weapons . Thats why I made this post to see if anyother games are like SB.  Maybe you should try a PvP game and drop the flower picking. Burn that rainbow off your chest and shave off that neon green fur. image

Man, Shadowbane was a great game... Everything was self governed, if you were a ass, everyone kills you over and over again... Some other guild camping your spot, kill all of em and raze their city... Since everyone leveled up really fast the game becomes a game about stragedy and tactics, well unless you outnumber then enemy 5to1... Ive seen a very well organized and coordinated group take on another group almost 5x their size (yeah, I was in the large zerg group), but only very few guilds could pull that off... Sadly, I have not played a game with so much player freedom since...

The only thing that turned me away from the game was that it ended up like playing a ffa rts game over and over and over again on the same map, with the same people. The ganking wasnt a problem cause most people were in a guild and you can bring up the issue with the guild the person's in, or just attack the guild outright. If they implemented server vs server wars, i would have stayed and kept playing...

The one game that is similar in gameply style would be Face of Mankind, dunno if its still in beta but it has a similar idea for gameplay. Its a MMOFPS/RPG that is all about territorial controll, but you cant build towns and castles and stuff, its a sci-fi game too.

It really sucks to see carebears talk. You should try a PvP game also and see what its like to be in a guild having teamwork in PvP. You might like true PvP. Untill then keep up with your magical adventures on non PvP games fighting mobs with your carebear stare.

I get a kick out of the folks who DONT like some form of PVP thinking they're in the majority. Go take a look at the poll I posted about PVP in MMO's and please take note of the fact that less than 10% of the respondants said they prefer NO PVP in a game. Over 90% of respondants stated that they like some form of PVP with the largest percentage liking PVP areas/zones/battlegrounds like are seen in DAOC, SWG, WoW, EVE and other modern games that support PVP (and are also very popular by the way)...

    I like PVP
    I hated Shadowbane
    Not because it had PVP
But because it sucked. The graphics were late 80's-early 90's quality on a game released in the 2000's. The gameplay was terrible. The economy sucked. It was just, overall, a craptastic piece of garbage. Using Shadowbane as a barometer for anything is just plain stupid.

You just described how shadowbane works. if you killed someone in the err... cop guild, the entire guild will hate you and attack you whenever they see you, and the um.. feds guild who controll most of the server will also be hunting you down all the time. If you do soemthing that the playerbase dont like you will be hunted down relentlessly, and getting spawn camped to kill you over and over until you log out, if you piss off everyone on the server you will end up having to make a new char or something. In shadowbane you depend on others for survival. Soloing is just about impossible. Players make their own rules.

oh yeah as someone said before: If I wanted graphics, I would play 3DMARK...
makes a lot of sense too.

  • jonsnow13jonsnow13 Member Posts: 67

Are you kidding me?  When shadowbane launched it was flooded with players... people didn't go to it because it was a good game that's for sure.  They went to it because there is a big market for unrestricted PvP.

Err, I don't really think these forums are a good way to judge if the majority of people like something, as most people who play MMO's don't really come to this site. And if the topic is about Pvp it's easy to assume the forum will show a greater lean toward the Pvp side since, if you don't mind a little generalization, your average Pvp player tends to be a tad more vocal than your average Pve player.
  • ElnatorElnator Member Posts: 6,077

LOL oh my god tell me you didn't just say that. Talk about over-generalization. How about totally untrue? I played EverQuest for 6 years. On a blue server. And to hear the people who played AVIDLY there I can tell you they were just as boisterous as any PVP'er I've ever seen post.

    LOL
Thanks for the laugh though, I needed it. It's been a hellish day at work (I hate con calls).

It's people like you who are holding MMORPGs back from becoming the genre it was meant to be.

  • OwynOwyn Member Posts: 337

    Lalala. ;)

Shadowbane: had 50k players at launch. Failed because they launched with buggy code, a poorly tested seige system, a game that could not handle the sort of mass combats that their system encouraged, and no content besides beating on other guilds til they quit the game. I say failed because they have under 10k subs today, which is a "failure" based on their anticipated numbers.

That said - had SB when it released looked like SB as it does today, they'd still have 50k players today. The game now has additional content; much better/less buggy code; much better designed guildwar/seige system; basically an overhaul of everything but the graphics - and they are in the process of trying to upgrade that as well.

PvP: Most players prefer to play a game with some form of pvp. However, it's very definately a minority that like FULL pvp. I'm in that minority. ;) In general, players start out in pve or RvR games, and a small percent move on to full pvp games after playing the other games after a while. Full pvp players, while they may also play RvR/PvE games on occasion, only RARELY swap back after having enjoyed full pvp. So it's a one-way movement of players - although slow. I'd guess that the total percent of people who would like full pvp is only maybe 10% of the overall US market.

That's still well over 200,000 players.

Most of those people played L2 when it came out. They're now biding their time in WOW. The next decent full pvp game will see an immediate 50k+ shift from WOW to that game.

The thing is that full pvp is not "mega popular". You're not going to see full pvp games with WOW's popularity - or even with EQ2's level - anytime soon, at least not in the US (in Asia, the reverse is true, and full pvp accounts for 75%+ of the playerbase; even in Europe, the full pvp % is much higher than in the US; go figure). So dev companies (who want to attract as many players as possible) tend to create games that will attract the largest masses, instead of targeting what is still a niche market in the genre.

EDIT: To answer the original question:
Existing games with full pvp servers, or general full pvp: EQ1, AC1, AC2, Eve, L2 (sorta), DAOC, RYL (I think?), Shadowbane. I miss any?
Upcoming games with full pvp (or that have announced plans for pvp servers): Mourning, Darkfall, Hero's Journey, Irth Online.

Online games are not real. Why not just join chat rooms if you are going to play a game with no real PvP? You fit the carebear role like a glove. I think shadowbane has a free 14 day trial for new players. Try it out get with a guild and see what real PvP is and stop being such a powder boy. Games with no real PvP are boring as hell and I would  have more fun playing PS2 games. I would not  give a company so many dollars a month to play a game to make myself look like a wuss. What game do you play? ultima online and your a trammie bank sitter?

    AC2 Free Trial

AC2 has some of the best graphics of any mmorpg, and the PVP system is very open ended. Join the trial and try the Darktide server, and you'll see what I mean.

haha your so lame, i pvp all the damn time, so STFU with your dickhead comments, you dont like consequences, you wanna be able to run your mouth all you want without the possibility of some dude kicking your ass like it happens in your school or job....

aww dont like my idea of killing your characters and permadeath mwahahaha whos the fucking carebear now? nothing more then i love then pussy ass gankers who suck at pvp and need to take it out on newbies

to NDK25 sorry bro those arent real consequences, i may get spawncamped til i log off but your damn well sure im just gonna gank those guys tomorrow

The reason you dont like real PvP is that you have no friends. You sound like a solo gamer. You have no clue what SB was like a time ago. Large scale wars 200 vs 200 or even more. Defending your city or taking your enemies city down. Sending one of your scouts out and about to find the enemies location to go hunt them down. Open PvP games have more teamwork. Dueling with your guildmates with your E-Bay bought gear dont count as PvP my friend. I would also like to say cry more and have fun doing lame quests. /tear
