God I can't wait to get away from the community in so many of the current and popular MMO's

It seems like the genre just keeps deteriorating but the great thing about ffxi was that it's play style was so different that it weeded out most of the tools.

All these people complaining about keyboard, about jumping, about it being asian, about whatever.... good... don't like it, stay away. I don't want you in my game anyways. FFXI has shown that this formula will work, will be successful, and will most likely have a fantastic community (as that game does/did).

So, here's too looking forward to a game with a community more representative of the original MMO community, ya know... the one that didnt suck...

My experience so far with Final Fantasy players is awesome. No whiny little shits or overly inflated egos.

Personally can't wait to start playing and ditching this troll infested forum.

I see you've yet to meet Error or seph on the forums?

I agree with the OP, this is by far the worse community on the official forums I've ever seen. And yes, the means worse than darkfall and wow. Now see that I emphasized "forums" and in reality there are a lot of good people in game and some try to be on forums but the official forums are just plain horrid with no moderating at all.

It's too bad people can't be content with expressing "This game isn't for me" or " I really enjoy it". We're stuck between the two extremes of " This fucking sucks" or " This is the greatest thing since sliced bread".

A shame that there's very little civil dialogue to be found here.

I agree, everyone deals in extremes, so hard to maintain an excitement over any new game reading 'DO NOT BUY THIS GAME' 'This fucking sucks' etc.

I will not be brought down tho, its gonna be 'the greatest thing since sliced bread'...oh wait :)

I'm a bit worried about the community myself tbh and it's not necessarily because some of the jerks from other games will migrate.  It's a different situation than FFXI.

So far in my experiences with the community, I've come across people who either:

    1) Had plenty of time to work themselves into an elitist niche mentality from playing FFXI for so long and will be disappointed if FFXIV isn't FFXI with upgraded graphics.

    2) Are just general FF and anime fans that are kind of socially strange but are usually more easy going in regards to the game.

    3) Are Casual mmo players that never played FFXI and can't grasp the more traditional style and slower pace that FFXI follows (this is probably the crowd that starts 5 separate 30 page threads on every game forum in existence complaining that you can't jump in the game).

    4) Long time mmo vets (like myself) who may have gotten some enjoyment out of FFXI but saw it's glaring flaws for what they are, are getting mixed vibes on FFXIV and are praying they didn't just waste the money they are dropping on the collector's edition >.>.

Hopefully, it all works out...good news is that I don't believe there will be global chat channels.  Those always seem to put a damper on things.

The community will not be all gummy bears and gum drops when the game first releases.

As it goes now with any new big name MMO, many many many people will try it, and many out of the many many many will not like it, and a few out of that many (per server) will be like republicans will itch and moan that it sucks, and things aren't going their way, and everyone should give up and quit.

After a month or so, I will hope that these loudmouth people who have nothing else to gripe about will be gone, and we will be left with a nice community.

I am entitled to my opinions, misspellings, and grammatical errors.

Sadly, this is an incredibly accurate portrayal of EVERY big MMO at release = Lets hope FFXIV is different =)

Someday we'll all look back on the age of computers - and lol.

"We got rid of the trinity." How'd you do that? "Now everyone can heal." Sounds like you just took the mechanic and spread it thin. "Well no, there's one class that can do it better than others." I see, so they're healers. "No. They're.." -mind asplode-

Did I mention the lack of global chat channels? :)

That should reduce a great deal of it, I think.

Dont worry, the kids who are disappointed its not a wow clone will disappear.

The kids who think its the second coming of wow will disappear.

The kids who play mmo's and fps' , having never touched a RPG will disappear.

All that will be left are those who think involving themselves in a deep story driven rpg is fun (Im included here.)

This is a big part of it right here.

Give an anonomous player an audience and he'll troll all day and night just for shits and giggles.

Granted I think the game will have it's trolls the first few months because thats just what the average amount of mmo players do, if the game lacks a global/zone wide chat then that will seriously hamper their efforts/discourage them from even bothering with it.

I think thats part of why XI has had a fantastic community since release, not to mention back in the times there simply weren't nearly as many trolls as there are today.

I hate to say it, but I fear this game will not be anything like FFXI was, community-wise.

FFXI was all about grouping. After lvl 10, you really had to start grouping. Sure, some jobs could solo beyond that level, but not the initial ones. That mean, if you were an ass-hat, groups were hard to come by...because people would remember you. So the core gameplay mechanics encouraged and nurtured a good community.

Now. If FFXIV is a lot more Solo-friendly as some people are saying...that motivation is now gone. Sure, there will be a lot of FFXI vets who group because they simply enjoy it, or purely out of habit....but we are also going to get the anti-social players who were turned off by FFXI's group-oriented gameplay.

That, and WoW has since turned on a metric F-Ton of those anti-social gits to MMORPGS. It might be said that there were more group-minded MMORPG players before WoW's release, hell maybe it was even true. However, it sure as hell isn't true now...

I'm not worried. I already have a group of like-minded players to Linkshell with, all old FFXI vets. I am looking forward to the game, either way.

IMHO no focus on pvp leads to a better community without the egos that go with fast twitch pvp and the faliming forums I think the shot at getting a community going in the direction becomes available, Not that pvp is bad of course its just the community killer from what I have seen. Either way FFXI had a great community and I think we will see the same thing here.

Well now that I read the responses well I realize my happy idea of a nice community discussion is over. Lets be honest if some1 hates the game they wont buy it and there will be people who buy it and dont like it but I still think the ingame community will be strong so no worries,

As for our lil community here and some of these responses

You'd be suprised at the amount of people that hate and still buy.

Don't confuse the closed beta community with the community once the game launches. From my experience with other betas, and I've beta tested a lot of games, it's like night and day.

Usually the people in closed beta are more mature and friendly in the way they act. These are the people who are, for the most part, truly interested in the game and want it to succeed. Once the game goes live, however, and the general public gets their hands on it, it becomes a nightmare filled with l33t speak, e-thugz and b-tards.

  • Other than, "hey you didn't sub nin, we are not going to invite you:", the community in FFIX was great. It was helpfull, friendly,  and had an overall fun atmosphere. People there at the time just wanted to play the game and have a great time developing their character, and forging bonds in an LS to tackle more difficult tasks.  If i remeber correctly there was alot less bitching back then,. Not to be confused with healthy dialog(dialogue) and conversations about ways SE could improve the game,  or the ever so popular topic starter, "wouldn't it be cool if they put this in the game".  Not todays its too hard or why can't i solo the whole game, this game sucks.  Community in an mmo and not the number of subscription fees makes a great and successful game and that overall players have the fondness memories about.  Don't get me wrong, even in newer MMOs I found great people to play with, but they were hard to come by. Most guilds you joined didn't ever group up until it was time for you to get end game content. This SHOULD NOT be the case. I want to party or group with people if I'm level one or six million and two.  It's an mmo thats the point, get together and have fun.  I remember(and i know some of you old dogs do too) that when this type of game came out, it was just awesome to get a bunch of your friends online, chat it up and explore the world together while meeting new people having them join you on this adventure(and they in turn would know more people and so forth).  I am not going to throw out a term people use too much and differently but I will say "old school gamer/player".  I think it is that the newer players to mmos never got a chance to play the table top games, or the muds, or was there when UO or EQ came out. Community was essencial to those games and if it wasn't there they would have failed.  Also it was the fact that you name meant everything. if your were an ass then getting a group might be difficult, although you might find a guild or group full of them and hey you are at a home away from home.  BUt yea your name made an impact on the world in which you played, for better or worse. And I think there is a since of pride in that. More so than what rank or lvl you are but the fact that people remember you and want you to be a part of there group. And then in turn if that group does well together then people will remember them in the future and so forth. Then you get a bounty put on you and you are chased across the globe or galaxy :) (for all you eve and UO friends). I do hope FF XIV has some old school elements and bring back that community feel. The question for the future of mmos is are you going to be a nameless damage dealer who gets picked up for x fight, then get your reward and go about your business, or hey look its (enter name) throw him an invite we got some adventuring to do.  Is the community going to know who you are? Is the game going to remember  you?
