DC Universe Online: Fan Faire Panel

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

MMORPG.com Managing Editor Jon Wood had the opportunity to attend last week's SOE Fan Faire in Las Vegas. During his time there, Jon attended a DC Universe Online panel and listened to an informative discussion about the game's story, feats, the game world, PvP and cross-platform development. Check it out!

The panel, as any good panel does, kicked off by showing the most recent trailer for the game. If somehow you’ve been living under a rock for the last few weeks and haven’t seen the epic trailer, do yourself a favor and click here.

Read more about the DCUO Fan Faire panel discussion.

I believe a video of the entire panel can be viewed here.

Some very nice stuff was discussed in this panel. I'm getting more excited for this title every day.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

Odd. This article leaves me feeling slightly disappointed but I can't figure out why really. I'm glad that they are sharing so much information with us and that's a good thing. I guess I was expecting something different to what's written here.

edit: had a look a t the vid thanks

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.

Kinda of disappointing that the PS3 and PC servers won't corss. Makes playing within 1 household difficult. If for instance you own 1 computer and 1 PS3, and im not poor but im not going to buiy a 2nd PS3 to collect dust so guess im stuck into choosing PC. So much for a successful MMO on a platform. Would of been nice to play with the wife and kids.

    As Always IMHO
    In my humble opinion.

I do agree it sucks that the servers wont cross, but that doesnt mean that it wont in the future.  When they see sales falling to much from 1 server type then in a update they will announce that the Servers will cross. I personally getting it for the PS3 no worries on requirements or any of that

'Action first, MMO second'.-that seems to be the fad these days. If I wanted an RPG I'd buy one-what I want from an MMO is different.

I was really hoping that PC and PS3 players would be able to play on the same server.  That means I can't play on the PC during the day and then retire and get some game time from the PS3 in the bedroom. :(

Oh well...can't get everything you want.

The PC and PS3 can't play together because, if  there were to be PvP, the console always loses to the keyboard and mouse. Gates tried a development concept that would combine the Xbox Live players with PC players online for games. The test group showed that the PC players with mouse keyboard beat their console brethren 9 out of 10 times in any death match or PvP type setting. Gates shelved the idea. In most action oriented, shooter type games the mouse keyboard could not be beat by the best console players with a controller. The last time I checked there were not to many fighting or sports games online for controllers to take advantage of.

Consensual open world PvP... great idea.  I'm still feeling fairly good about the direction of this title.  It is a shame about the separate servers,  but overall, still pretty excited to see the finished product.

Some good, some bad in this, I love the approach to pvp and 'proper' hero vs villain play, the seperate servers is a bit of a downer - i hope they reconsider but realise this was a business model problem rather than a technical one. The real worry for me is the 'action game first, mmo second...' comment - the superhero fraternity already have mmo-lite in CoH and mmo-superlite in CO but nothing of any real depth (unless going Rogue transforms CoH). Nevertheless they seem a lot more genuinely savvy and enthused about their product than any other modern or in production mmo I have followed, lets hope it translates into the final product.

Three movement powers, just like City of Heroes. Even if some of them are crappy, Champions has around 10!  Two city environments sounds kind of limiting. If other players can disrupt you while moving across a zone, how is PvP consensual? The heroes are springing into action based on the word of Lex Luthor, but heroes and villains can't team up. Hmmm...

Last I checked, this wasn't a shooter.  I can't see how a test for a shooter game, with an glaringly obvious advantage to free hand movement (mouse) is applicable to an action oriented MMOG.  While I have always said, Gates test or not, that PC trumps consoles in FPS games, the same can't be said about MMOGs.  Remember Final Fantasy XI?  It's still around.  While FFXI is probably not as action oriented as DCUO will be, I doubt that there will not be a sticky targeting system like most MMOGs have today.

Still, my decision is not whether I will purchase this game, it's what platform i will purchase it for...just a bummer cuz I probably would have forked out the cash for both if it were cross platform.

Champions does have plenty of movement powers,  but not really as many as you think if you count that there are a few different flight options,  their acrobatics is really a mix of two powers,  and their superspeed isn't remotely as cool because you can't run up walls.

I care much less about how many travel powers they have and worry much more about the balance between these powers in PvP.    Champions is a mess of players some way underpowered and others using FOTM builds left and right.  Champions was never meant to be a PvP game.

The PvP is consensual because you can flag yourself for PvP in the open world.

I don't care much about the locations as long as the locations are big enough and have enough content to keep me entertained.

I'm feeling very good about what this game is offering,  I just feel like I'm still missing out on a bunch of information so close to release.

Just wait until the PvPers start crying about how certain power  combinations are "OP", then watch the city burn! This is why I have no use for PvP. PvE is always at the mercy of the elusive, holy "Balance".

In CoH you at least had some structure of balance, albeit it wasn't totally balanced,  they at least tried to form a good scale.

In champions they just tossed balance out the window.

I don't require perfect balance,  just something thats remotely playable by all builds.

Alright i have a few thoughts on the game, and comments on some things people have said above... (not trying to put off a bad vibe, just voicing information that others may not know)

    1.  I don't like how they aren't integrating pc and ps3 servers.  But i'm pretty sure they will end up doing it any way.. Especially if they want more sells.  Alot of people would buy the game twice, and maybe even more times if they integrate both servers.

    2. There are two zones, but dont be alarmed.  The zones are absolutely massive from what i've heard.  if you think about it in city of heroes you have Paragon City and Rogue Isles. I'm thinking the size of metropolis is going to be similar to Paragon city accept there will be no loading zones. which honestly... Is going to so awesome.  You won't use your travel powers to get from one end of a district to the other so that you can zone into another district.  you'll be traveling across a whole city!  They did this because they have really put so much time into the movement of the game.  They said that alot of the time they just have fun running around the city, jumping from building to building.

    3. Travel Powers:  Yes there are only 3 travel powers.  BUT!  You can upgrade your travel powers.  And i'm not talking about upgrades like in CO.  They said that you will be able to add new abilities to your travel power.. such as with Super Speed you would be able to run circles around your enemy making them dizzy.  That sounds pretty freaking awesome.  I love how they've taken travel powers and have made it not only a power to get from point A to point B but have turned it into a power that you will use in combat.  I think this should have been done long ago because superheroes in the comics use their travel powers as tools of combat as well.   But none-the-less  im so glad they are doing it now.  It's going to be great.

    thanks for reading - lol

Actually, Microsoft released a game in 2007, Shadowrun, that allowed PC players to play against XBox 360 players. They had to give the 360 kind of a magnetized auto-aim and sabotage the mousers via accuracy penalties for moving.

Here's the wikipedia article on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowrun_(2007_video_game)#Differences_between_Windows_and_Xbox_360_versions
