Honestly i only say EA because they fund these games for release than set the dates, the terms, and sometime control the content and when things turn foul they pull funding and move on to the next project...
I followed APB for as long as it was in development (since 2006 I believe) and trust me, EA is not to blame. The publication deal EA made was a publication deal they only sought after when the game was in a state that they considered to be finished. Realtime Worlds is simply not that great of a developer and should go back to making Crackdown because Crackdown 2 was just terrible by Ruffian Games.
Most of the development team has been fired. The ability to subscribe in monthly blocks has disappeared. Rumors are circulating that RTW is trying to sell the game to another investor. Horrible reviews and poor sales with a small playerbase.
Damn, I wanted to love this game, but it's such a wasted good idea. Who else gets the feeling the plug is going to be pulled on this game in six months or less?
From the things we've seen on these forums it's true that APB really was a wasted idea. The game area that was much too small to be a successful MMORPG in any way whatever and the heavy emphasis on customisation was more like a virtual gangster dollhouse than anything else. Customisation is excellent and a much needed part of a MMORPG to really carve out who your character is among the potential tens of thousands but customisation just isn't content, it's icing on the content cake.
But perhaps we should all look at this as a lesson: don't be creative just to be creative, there has to be substance and a point. Without that, much like Lithdov has said, it's just wasted potential.

well its not a MMORPG, but it will get an award for shortest lived MMOTPS

If its on MMORPG.com, then it fits the site's standards to be considered an MMORPG.
Also, was EA responsible for funding RTW to develop this game? Or did they have any decision about when it was to come out? EA probably had enough money to let RTW finish the game, but I'm kind of in the dark about what exactly publishers are responsible for and if dev companies get any funding from them, or just from their investors.

The only thing in MMORPG that APB fits the M and O for multiplayer online. The games not "Massive", and there is absolutely no RPG element existing. If there is it's the weakest plot i've ever seen. Something about vigilante's taking over as enforcers to supress crime.
I was a huge APB fan and even pre-purchased the game from Steam.
It ended up being a huge disgrace, my computer could barely run it and its a computer i made myself. And yes I know how to build a comp, the game just has a terrible engine, much like tabula rasa.
Thats the one thing WoW has always had going for it in my book, the fact that it can run on max graphics on basically any decent comp, and the graphics are not bad despite what most peoples opinions are. They may be kiddy and colorful but graphically it still is smooth and well textured.
O and also, I didnt end up paying for the game, I messaged steam and told them i couldnt run it and they removed my pre-purchase the next day.

While I agree with you, our opinion is irrelevant in terms of this site's standards.

Vey true. However, this site's "standards" regarding what makes it as an mmo and what doesn't have been changed dramatically over the years. By this sites current standards, ( as shown by listing Global Agenda, APB, Hellgate: London, etc., etc.,) Diablo and Neverwinter Nights qualify as mmos.

I put that at the fault of the developers as well, many of these devs chose to call their games MMO's. While i do agree it should be up to MMORPG.com to provide a definition and stick to it, Its also kind of hard for them to not promote these games.
I mean think about it, how many Hellgate ads did you see on the site? How many Global Agenda? APB?
They obviously chose to promote here because they believe its part of their fanbase.

From now, what we need is a Real GTA MMO with all type of jobs that we can chose.
We should all start as innocent poor ppl who are looking for a job. Some end up as criminal, some go to school to be a Police, FBI or stuff like that. Even Medic achievement should be in that too.
If you die, you lose your gun and have to buy an other one or kill a player to pick up his gun. Body armor and stuff like that should replace Equipment. These equipment should have durability and if you die, you lose it so someone else can pick it up.
I mean, its so easy to think about it. The only thing you should not include is Unreal Engine since it had never been made for MMORPG's.
should have been just pistols and knives or something, unless you live in a warzone criminals, nor police etc, dont get to carry machine guns.. which are far to easy to get hold of.... and the driving too, is rubbish.. unfortunately..
Well, it's too bad RT marketed it as one, isn't it? They get to enjoy the same fate as Flagshit Studios Hellgate: London, whih made the same stupid mistake of claiming to be something it wasn't.
The guys at Flagship were actually very competent. After the Hellgate/Mythos fiasco, they decided to start up fresh as Runic and steer clear of all the crap they got themselves into with their publisher the first time around. You may know Runic as the developer of Torchlight...

Well true true it was a major jump of the gun but honestly the game is not bad but its not a mmo
It will be hard to beat Fury and Hellgate London.
Hellgate was not an MMO.
Pretty sure Fury wasn't either.
how it it not a mmo?
playing with 4 other players is not mmo.
