Is this game fun? I'm having trouble with the community...
At first i thought i'll roll a priest because you always need healers. It went Ok for about 30-35 levels. Then i realised my server needed tanks more than healers so i rolled a bear tank. I'm 32 now and i just got back from a week forced break. Cleaned up auctions and queued for a random dungeon as tank. The hunter had growl on and the warrior was overgeared and kept pulling rushing in. For the first pull i thought fine, he has that kind of gear that he doesn't need a tank so i'll let him tank his pull and take care of the rest. It was graveyard or library. not sure. Runners pulled more and the healer went oom. I wait for the next pull to see if the warrior was going to rush in. He taps forward a couple of times but doesn't jump in. I figure i'd give it a second go. The second i hit forward he taps charge. Gave it a 15 sec before figuring those guys didn't want a tank.
Actually no. They want a perfect bot tank in full heirloms.
I'm just not good enough and i don't feel like playing a dps.

IMHO idk. At times it was. Now a days I find myself playing it for its accessability.
I remeber when I first played it about 5 years ago, it was amazing. That little guitar sound in the barrens, the cool cute little goblins. The mystery of the next land I would explore.
Then it got extremely repetitive. It may be my fault because I rarely have time to do dungeons, but I have done a bunch, and they always seemed rushed and hard to follow other than attack attack attack rest, rest oh shit attack heal attack.
Im playing right now, but I find Im also tired of these cookie cutter quests. Nothing really compares at the time though. It seems like WOW gives you just enough of everything to hold me over, but nothing awe inspiring.
Sure people will probably say Im a douche, or I have to high of expectations (which I do) but all the stories seem generic.
I think every quest should be epic, awe inspiring, and different.
I need voiceovers otherwise the game feels stale to me. Not like Oblivion or nothing, i like wows voice style although I hate how it repeats itself.
I guess the real resonse to your question would be: define fun?
To the caterpillar it is the end of the world, to the master, it is a butterfly.
The game can be fun, but yes the community is god awful.
In these random 5 mans, you will run into every brand of idiot and jerk you can fathom existing and then some.
Tanks are probably the most desirable by far on most servers - the queue time is basically instant in my experience. You chose the right role if your main concern is minimal wait time between dungeons. You're in kind of a unique position because so many tanks choose to be prima donnas and threaten the group with a long wait if they get miffed for some reason and leave. If you learn to be patient and adapt to the situation as a tank, you will be appreciated by the occasional decently-behaved person you run into, even if not audibly.
My advice is, keep at it and do your thing no matter what stupid dps try to pull (literally). Eventually, you'll get well geared and then they won't be able to get away with half of it - or they'll just make themselves look foolish when they do. You don't have to take the blame for everything. If it's one team mate causing the issues, tell them politely, but straight out - if they don't stop, try to have them kicked. Only leave if it's really every single group member that is causing problems - otherwise you're punishing everyone in the group for what 1 or 2 jerks did.
Of course, there's always the alternate solution of finding a good guild and running all your 5 mans with them.
At least you got this in the correct forum... Unlike a slew of others that post in General under the guise of "legitimate" complaints...

Someone said WoW has everything to hold someone. Why is it pushing me away so hard then?
-Would you like cheddar or swiss cheese?
-Yes.

That someone is full of it >.>.
It has everything to hold you, as long as you never get tired of certain things lol...
Just now. Shaman healer dps as he heals me. Sometimes.
I figured he has unlimited mana and don't stop for mana then they get all bitchy. Go figure.
EDIT: Sometimes as he heals me sometimes...
-Would you like cheddar or swiss cheese?

For now, i've given up on tanking and went back to my priest. If that doesn't help i guess i'll be going back to EvE.

Is it fun? I guess that depends on what your problem with the game is.
If its community then best bet is find friends or a decent guild and just run with them then you wont have to worry about b.s. from randoms .
If your just looking for straight fun then dont worry about what character would be needed and just find a character type you find fun and just put that player where it fits in and dont be bothered with the whole healer/ tank etc etc issue( this is something i had to learn mid way through . when i first started play i just played for fun then later i started to do the whole postion character thing and it got borring. when i went back to playing or fun it was fun again
if you been on the game for a few years then its just that.. play any game for 2, 3 4+ years its gonna get repetive
but really if anything just try a combination of 1 and 2 find a good guild and a character type you have fun with and the raiding/ instances work themselves out. To big a guild usually already set up who they gonna promote and who they gonna screw over you dont want that but to small the community is usually better but not many people to run with or at least that would be all at the same time so its good to find a decent medium size.. if you can get one with about 15 people online most the time usually good.
I challenged my reflection to a staring contest....4 days later i won
I'll give the guild thing a shot. I'm currently with a rl friend's guild. Problem is it's dead and i'm leveling a toon on his server. he's 80.
-Would you like cheddar or swiss cheese?
-Yes.

If he is a RL friend, tell him not a to be a tool, and to help you level. If he PL's you (as the grind up can be lonely AND boring) you can do stuffs in the higher levels. PvP, Arena, Raiding, RPing (If it even happens anymore) and the like.
Honestly WoW lost its flare right in the middle of TBC for me. Blizz started catering to the masses and game just plummeted for me. I have 23k gold sitting on my toon, and a guild with 5 bank tabs for crying out loud.
I don't want to be power leveled. It's all i ever do. Level a toon to cap, play it for a day or two then roll an alt.
I haven't done a heroic once or a raid. Well that's not entirely true. i did some failed zg raids back before BC. We downed about 1 boss ever.

I recently leveled a toon to 80, and I've been to the occasional ICC raid. While I'm not much of a raider, and mainly log in about once a week for the odd ICC 10-man, I can honestly say that I had fun with WoW. My problem is that I usually start seeking out other MMORPGs once I hit the cap in a game.
As for your grouping woes, I've been in a LOT of bad PUGs pre-60, but relax, it's pre-60. It doesn't take much to level up in WoW these days, and you're grouping with people who have potentially only been playing the game a couple weeks. Ease up on the hunter too. It's easy to neglect growl from time to time, and I should know from experience. Just ask him to turn it off, and if he's a competent individual, he'll turn it off. In my experience, after I hit the BC content, grouping via the dungeon finder was much better, and I rarely got stuck in a bad group. It does happen sometimes though.
True, you're at a disadvantage when you don't have heirlooms, and I've gone on record saying I never thought they were a good idea. I think you overstate the problem though, as I've been in tons of groups with a fresh tank and healer. Sometimes people don't care, but if people are getting antsy, just inform them you're new and that you're not someone's twinked out alt.
Random strangers are like that.

Well, my teenage son and his friends all seem to love it. Just last night they were proudly telling me about their 5100 gear scores or something and how it now makes them 'eligible' to run some sort of instance or dugeon run.
I think WOW might have lost a lot of the charm I enjoyed back in the early days, leaving before BC came out was still probably the right thing to do.

Sorry to hear about your experiences... Sometimes my pugs have bad experiences, sometimes good. Cant help it really. Do not despair! There are plenty of decent folks out there, find them and stick with them! Too bad you can't keep track of the good folks on other servers, so that you can regroup with them again.
Oh and do not worry about bear-tank, they have hard time keeping aggro at your level, I know mine still has trouble at higher levels. It all depends on how good DPS is, sometimes when those mages are speced right and do a great job, they peel agro and you gotta use all your druid tricks to regain it. Keep trying bro, dont let a few rotten apples ruin your day.

What you describe is an MMO problem not a WoW problem.
No it is not fun. 12 Million pay for this game because they don't have fun.
They pay for it because Blizzard is holding a gun to their heads and are afraid to die.
Well Kat.. WoW has all kinds and in my experience, the community is horrid and end game features are equally bad.. In my opinion I rate the game based on two scores.. First score is when leveling 1-80.. I give WoW an B+ for polish and simplicity.. It doesn't get a strong A because it lacks features like a strong player economy, instanced housing and contested PvP areas that are meaningful.. Once you hit 80 I give WoW a score of C.. The end game is all about Arena E-sport or limited Raiding.. The Raiding in WoW is horrible, probably the worst I ever played.. I loathe hard capped raids.. All it does is promote people to become elitist exclusion snobs..
However you'll hear something completely different from fans that think God plays WoW on his days off.. If you like quick easy access Big Mac's.. WoW is your game.. If you want something more or different.. look around..
@rydeson
I don't mean to get in the way of your rant and all the reasons you think wow sucks, but if you are going to tell someone there are better games maybe you should also suggest what games to look at and why they are better in comparison?
Just so you look like you are being objective about your suggestions.
Better games would be relative and opinionated.. so why list them? That is why I told her to look around and see what is out there.. Cause I'm sure as soon as I give an example of what I think is better (my opinion) you would be one of the first WoW fans to jump all over it and start the old.. blah blah blah WoW is better crap.. Sorry to take away your fun in trying to attack my personal preferense But I will tease you with EVE has a HUGE adantage of player economy over WoW..... in my opinion
@rydeson
Oh I see. Your relative opinion on wow was important enough to go into great detail about and why it is bad, but your relative opinion about other games wasn't important enough to offer as an alternative. That makes sense. My mistake.
@OP
Pick up groups can be hit or miss. Just let people know you are new right from the start and are open to advice. Some people will not want to spend time teaching new players and others will. I've found that being proactive in the game (any really) goes a long way to solving potential problems. It sounds like you are having a lot of problems that are reacting to things that already happened.
Also tanking in any established game as a new player is a pretty big task to start with. Most groups rely heavily on the ability of a tank or just treat every fight as if they are grouped with their raid geared tank of 5 years and can disregard simple gameplay mechanics due to unrealisitic expectations.
Try hitting the forums for your server and make a post about finding likeminded people to play with. Either other new players to group with or a group of people that take in newbies and help them learn the game. Wow is very diverse in its playerbase and if you take the time to look you will eventually find a group of players that share your same values and playstyle.
I know this doesn't help right now, but when cataclysm releases later this year it should revitalize the lower levels of gameplay as most of the world is getting renewed with new quests, landscapes and dungeons. There will be tons of people playing in the 1-80 level content that you could join up with outside of the cross server dungeon tool.
That is my advice.
