This sounds really good. I use to play AOE all the time when I first started gaming. I'll definitely be checking this out.

What it says is "free to play experiences" which, at least from what I've read, seem to indicate -some- multiplayer cooperative questing, etc. What it really sounds like is more of the 'hybrid' type of game that's becoming quite vogue. :)

Wait....so is this RTS-ish combat?  I'll have to read up on this a bit more!

Hm sounds interesting but I am sceptic as it could be another money-grab like STO. Where they say the game is an MMORPG (to be able to charge a monthly fee) where in fact it is missing vital elements of being an MMORPG.

yep would love to play a newer version of age of empires, but question the MMO part of it, but the online part sure sounds like a rip off....as someone once said, wont be long before everything is an MMO.  and not like Microsoft havent always been ripping off their customers.

edit: if its free to play I ll ofc download it and try it out :P

I wonder why this is called an mmo when it clearly states a co-op,  and it is rts

surprised more RTS do not go the battle net route offering servers for online games.  Was AoE only LAN before or no multiplayer at all?

Probably because it will be a persistent game world.

Heh.. +1 more for the F2P era.. Looks like it'll be fun..

Should've known this was coming after Transformers Online. They'll make an "MMO" out of anything now, but this actually looks kind of fun. The original AoE is too old to really get any players, so maybe a new MMO version will.

Speaking of good old games being made into MMOs, did this site pick up on Stronghold Kingdoms? Still in Alpha though.

Where did it say the game is an MMORPG or even an MMO?  I looked at their site and watched their video....I never saw that..

I liked the AoE games, but would sorta prefer this not be an "MMO". As it stands, it looks like a persistent co-op game with an MS version of BattleNet. At an rate, I could be completely wrong. My assessment is just based on going through the FAQ and no telling how things will develop as the game nears release.

One of my all-time favourite games, hopefully this will just offer a good multiplayer expierence on top of the existing foundations.

according to mmorpg.com any game can be classed as an mmo if they deem it to be so.

Not interested in this garbage at all.  Maybe ONE day Microshite will finish what they started and come out with a real mmo, they like to think they are the best at doing everything.

Doesn't look like this will be a full blown MMO, but as a fan of older AoE games, I'll be checking this one out as well.

This is definitely NOT a Massive MultiPlayer Online game.  What it is is an online RTS with a persistant world that allows co-op play with your LIVE friends or pvp with anyone on a randomly generated map if you so desire.  There is a HUGE difference.  That being said though, I may still take a look at it simply because I used to really enjoy AoE and this persistant world addition as well as being able to play it from anywhere might be interesting and a nice way to kill some time.

Hahahaha, persistent world my ass. They'll probably steal the Heroes of Might & Magic navigation map concept, and then when a battle is supposed to happen, it generates a combat map for you to do your regular AoE battles with that opponent you just encountered.

This is NOT what I call persistent.  As the game industry stands now, an MMORTS is IMPOSSIBLE to make. A huge map where everybody builds bases AND fights on that very same map, now that is an MMORTS.

This, however, is very impractical. What happens if a player logs out? Will his base dissapear, or will AI take over? Then will the AI be good enough to represent the player's skills? Or will a base be put on hold and unattackable when the player logs out? But then what happens if the enemy builds around your base when you're offline? It is not exactly easy to turn an RTS into an actual MMO and try to keep your playerbase from raging and ending their supscription.

Another company that thinks they can stick the word "Online" behind their name and call it a MMO.

Love how they define persistent.  Certainly not using any definition used in the MMO genre.

So basically it is Travian on steroids. Also it looks terrible.

Is there a franchise that hasn't stabbed at the MMO market? Geez

  • LordAdderLordAdder Member Posts: 123

They've stretched the meaning of 'persistent', in this case meaning that when you log out, your city and settlements keep working.  The PvP has to be mutually agreed upon and takes place on a randomly generated map.  When you are actually playing - besides with LIVE friends - you are only playing against the AI, basically just like the boxed single-player games but you are doing so online from wherever you wish to play.  Like I said... NOT an MMO by any stretch of the imagination.

I am sure they gonna destroy every good memory I have of AOE with this failed attempt, just look at heroes of might magic and what happened to it.
