City of Heroes: Going Rogue: Now Live; Launch Trailer Released!

Going Rogue, the second paid expansion to NCsoft and Paragon Studios super-powered MMORPG City of Heroes went live today and we're bringing you a hot new trailer to drum up the launch day excitement!

For the uninitiated, Going Rogue offers players an entirely new 1-20 experience in the form of an alternate-universe Paragon City known as Praetoria. The slick new zones are built from the ground up using City of Heroes' previously released "Ultra Mode" graphical upgrade tech, giving the aging game a serious facelift.

The key feature of the expansion though is the new side-switching feature, which allows heroes and villains the ability to fall from grace or redeem themselves and see how the other side lives.

Going Rogue also adds four new powersets to the game, two of which have been in the hands of players for several months now, and these would be the new Dual Pistols and Demon Summoning powersets. Kinetic Melee along with Electric Control, powersets announced earlier this year at PAX Boston, will make their debut today with the full release of the expansion.

Check out the launch trailer here, and be sure to visit the official Going Rogue website for additional information on the expansion.

I've tried real hard to get excited about this, but the whole environment makeover is less a draw than a character makeover would have been. In my mind, my heroes have fingers and more than the same painted-on faces. I remember when they added PhysX, before Nvidia bought the company and integrated it into their cards. It made the game buggy and laggy. I can imagine Ultra-Mode being similar.

Maybe I'll pick up this expansion when it gets cheaper, just like I've done with every expansion after CoV. Demon Summoning looks cool, anyway.

I was having fun during the soft launch yesterday. Kinetic Melee is awesome from what I've played so far. The animations are sexy as hell. The new Praetoria content is well done as well, nicely polished.

I've been playing almost nonstop for a week now, Praetoria is wonderful, I'm now switching my Stalker over to Blueside using the tip missions...

    Excellent work NCSofT!!

I have to admit that I am disappointed in Praetoria, so far.  Too many of the Resistance Missions involve finding your way thru the sewers - with the sewers being multi-level and the maps showing a single dimension, I find it extremely hard to find my way to the various goals in order to complete the missions.  I have always enjoyed the fact that you could find a mission using your compass and the red indicator to make your way - even though this was harder in the tunnels, you could skip past many missions taking place underground.  I hoped that when I discovered the Underground movement that this mapping problem could be modified to make it harder to get lost.  I admit that I get lost easily in tunnels and the Underground - but I am sure that others have that problem.   Perhaps with a bit of prodding this will change but there are sections of certain maps in the ordinary CoH missions that still do not display, although I know several other CoH veterans who have also called this to the attention of CoX  Support.  I love CoH, like CoV and am a veteran CoH gamer for over 6 years - the Support staff is excellent and the game content does not disappoint me but like everything else - CoH is not perfect.  I swear that I am addicted to CoH/CoV and will most likely play CoX as long as it remains as much fun as it is now.

There are a few other problems with my experience of Praetoria but most of them are minor.  The Underground scenes are a little dim but I think adjusting my brightness options will fix that.  I have also had some difficulty with the pop-up display but when I did not disable it, I moved the display away from where it interferes with my tray displays with a little click & drag.  (You can disable the pop-ups for an individual toon by going thru the options menu - but you must choose for all of your toons individually - even established ones NOT participating in the alignment shift offered.   It is not a major problem, sometimes I don't even notice the pop-ups but some might find it a little annoying.) I also noticed that the option to take alignment shifting missions was not offered to me at level 5 - which the Patch Update says should happen.  Just minor glitches that the next update should fix, I believe.

The new alignment shift possibility is one that gamers have been looking forward to from the beginning of CoH, it has real possibilities for increasing interest in this great game.  At least, CoH is trying to keep giving us new content and keep my favorite game fresh and vital.

Grandville was hopping with villains fed up with Recluse's BS. We were running thru a ton of tip missions on various toons. Haven't made it to blue side yet, cause I've been too distracted with new power sets and the new zone.
