Speculate on professions here! Whether you're guessing the skills of the Warrior, or are determined that the mesmer is getting the axe, post in here! Anyway, here is my (personal) guess-list of the professions in the game:
The following 8 professions will exist:
1. Elementalist
2. Warrior
3. Ranger
4. Mesmer (Will be able to use swords)
5. Assassin (Might be able to use pistols and shortbows)
6. Necromancer
7. "Knight, "Cleric", or "Paladin", whatever the fuck you want to name it. Basically a warrior with healing/support skills.
8. This is the only one I'm unsure about. Perhaps a "gunner" or "pirate" type class? Someone who specializes in firearms. Other potential names are: "Engineer" and "Alchemist"
Note: I wrote up this list before the ranger was revealed, so I've gotten one profession correctly guessed so far.
Comments
My speculative list, is as follows:
4)Necromancer - pretty much a known profession since it was in the first book.
5)Archanist - replaces the mesmer and is able to use pistols
6)Ravager - replaces the assassin and uses shortbow, dual axes, swords, daggers
7)Engineer - the guns but no bows class we were told about.
8)Acolyte - the other heavy armor class that uses mace/shield or a staff in melee and has support skills.
As for the second heavy armor class, I'm pretty sure that Anet will not use a name like Paladin or Templar; it becomes far too easy to make bad comparisons to those classes from other games and that just isn't something Anet does. Also, those names don't fit with world lore; I don't think you would see a Charr Templar, or a Norn Paladin.

Here's my guess:

How far off could you be...
Your engineer = Heavy armor class that uses axes and guns
Your assasin = Rogueish class that has more support roles then just DPS
Your Knight = is light armor class another caster type, or even a mellee/caster hybrid type
Your mesmer = Necromancer which inheritted most mesmer skills too.
Your Necromancer = a medium armored martial arts class that nexyt to fist weapons uses staves and the like.

Dude... you're basically saying that anet will introduce 4 new classes. They said that there will be only 2 new classes.
My speculative list is the same as Bob The Tank

I'm probably one of those people who just get wet.
Soldier:
1. Warrior (Announced)
2. Unknown - I think this will be a variation of the Paragon, but in heavy armor and no thrown weapon.
Adventurer:
1. Ranger (Announced)
2. Assassin (Obvious in picture, to the left of the Ele opposite the ranger).
3. Gunner (TBA)
Scholar:
1. Elementalist (Announced)
2. Necromancer (In Book)
3. Mesmer (In Book)
Steam: Neph
Replace "necromancer" with "knight" and "knight" with "mesmer" and I think you've got it, boyo.
On the GW2 site it says for Norn: The norn can assume the form of their sacred totem beasts--bear, snow leopard, raven, and wolf--and call upon their power whenever they do battle, which is often.
So will they have their own class that can change like the druid in WoW or can you be any class and Norn and this will just be a racial ability? Anyone know yet?
It's a racial ability. Anet said there are no race-specific classes. All races can be all classes.
what profesion is Kranxx supposed to be in Ghosts of Ascalon, an engineer?
In the book his title is tactician
ah thnx for that info, I always miss small details like these when I read lol
The Norn transformations are likely an optional, socketable skill. I wouldn't be surprised to see something like:
Cool Abilities for Humans
Golem Pets for Sylvari
Big "War Machine" Type Weapons for Charr
and Mech suits for Asura
On the case of classes, I would like to reinterate on an earlier persons points... the OP
4. Assassin
5. Necromancer
6. Mesmer
7. Engineer
8. Spellsword (Heavy Armor)
Now you may notice the only departure I took from traditional MMO thinking and the OP would be Spellsword, sort of.
The reason I emphasize Spellsword over Paladin or Knight, is because Paladin suggests a Healing/Warrior Hybrid and we all know that main-stream healing abilities are out. Knight suggests a redundancy with Warrior. I look for rational classes that can fill roles left by previous leave-outs, and Monk / Rit / Derv / Paragon are left out. Spellsword has the opportunity to cherry pick all those classes, and fill a protection/damage role. Imagine this "Spellsword" (Still not convinced on the name though) walks into a battle, lifts a spiritual wall to use as a huge terrain object for whatever purpose. That would be a ritualist skill. He then throws down an aura that protects everyone that sits in it. That would be a monk skill. He then walks up and does a badass roundhouse cleave with his two hander. That would be like a Dervish. He Could have buffs like Paragons too =p
But yeah, whatever the 8th classes is even if it isn't mine - WILL have heavy armor and will look for a fun set of roles to fill.

Golem pets for Sylvari?, do you mean Asura?
When Anet said they were introducing 2 all new classes, they also said that a few got renamed to better fit the changes that have happened throughout Tyria; so to me, my list makes sense because the core mechanics for mesmer and assassin remain, just name changed with some added mechanics. I feel the name changes better fit with the new lore: Archanist suits asura just as well as it does does a human, whereas mesmer doesnt really seem to fit with any race other than human. The same thing for ravager, I can see a charr or human ravager, I can't see a charr or norn assassin though--it just doesn't fit the established lore for those races.
Yeah I know what you mean but if you use that kind of logic basically other professions wouldn't fit.
Asura and probably even Sylvari don't seem like the warrior type. They are not the type of race who are really aggresive. Sylvari doesn't seem like the type to be an engineer. They are a new race so they are not very advanced or industrialized plus they have a huge thing for magic and connection. Necro wouldn't really go with Asura as I don't see anything about them using dark arts, summoning minions, etc. and it seems kind of pointless for them as they already have G.O.L.E.M.s so they have no use for minions or spirits. So you see what I'm saying here?
Besides Assassin and Mesmers actually do fit with most races
Charr legions contain both mesmers and assassins.
Asura can definitely go for mesmer and assassin. They are that type of race who think they have a superior intellect and would probably love to mess around with ppl, create illusions, etc.
For norn... well... honestly i dont see any caster profession going with them. Except for ele... but even then its kind of weird.
Humans do everything. They are very versatile.
Sylvari... again, i dont see them doing much beside casting and being a ranger.
Now the only profession they MIGHT rename imo is Assassin as it is from Canthan origin. Other than that everything else should stay the same.

I'm probably one of those people who just get wet.
i was just thinking .. i used to play FlyFF and they had 2 mage classes, the one dealing with the elements, which we already have revealed in GW2 and they also had one that was all about psychic abilities an stuff so maybe that will be another mage class

To everyone that said the necromancer wouldn't be included - hah! So far I've predicted two classes correctly, hooray!
