Cancelled by the developer after beta proved it to be nowhere near ready. My guess is they determined they needed more time/money and didn't have enough funds.

Actually, the reason the developers gave was something like:
"According to our calculations, running a single-server world with our existing hardware and server technology will be too expensive to maintain, based on our predictions for subscription numbers."
There was nothing inherently flawed with the gameplay. I beta tested it, and I had a great time. Certainly, there were issues, but they were details to be ironed out during testing. No fundamental features were broken, nothing about the game was buggy enough to keep me from enjoying it. I didn't even think the servers were down that often, other than the first two or three days of the open beta. Maybe I got lucky with my sleep schedule, being in Alaska.
Either way, those people who said the game couldn't have competed with the other games on the market, due to broken gameplay, or bad graphics, or PnC, are completely wrong. That was not the reason the game was canceled.
P.S. Anyone who thinks PnC will "never work" should open their eyes and see the reality that is Lineage. True, a fluke generated by a unique market in Asia, but still over 2/3rds of MMo subscriptions today are for Lineage 1 and 2. Both point and click.
----------------------------- Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

Verbose: Development was so far behind and progressing so slowly that it didn't stand a chance of competing or making a profit.
Brief: It was bad.
