    That's a hack.  I've gotten like 5 of those.

  • sultharsulthar Member Posts: 298

    It's a fake

    the only good way to check if you are invited is to log on your account directly from Wow webpage and check the status of your account. If you are invited it will be written there.

    Obviously fake, I have gotten 2 emails from supposed battle.net that claims I "ordered" a Starcraft 2 game via Visa when I noticed I don't even have a VISA to begin with. The other one is about my WoW account being under investigation and they want me to log into their site. Really funny emails nonetheless so I just deleted them right away.

    My advice is, just ignore it. If you haven't done anything wrong, you won't get any emails from battle.net unless you send them one.

    Does that look like Blizzard to you? Wouldn't you log in to your Battle net account at a website like... ohhh I don't know, battle.net?

    Yea, it was obvious a poor attempt at getting me to log on, my concern was: How did they come across my Email rarely used and nothing to do with any games? Nevertheless, with the gold selling spam going on I figured there are some who may consider the invite.. To this end, thank you all and may da swartz be with us...always.

    Not sure how they got your email. However, in my case, spammers have at times acquired both my home and my work email address.

    They gained my home email address by hacking my ISP. My ISP quickly implemented a spam filter, and I see hardly any spam - but I still know my address is out there.

    My work email address is only known by work colleagues, a few friends, and 3-4 tech companies. Not sure exactly how the spammers got that - maybe a work colleague was hacked and their address book was stolen.

    I believe spammers picked up another one of my email addresses when I logged on to a gaming site via a proxy. Presume the proxy must have been compromised.

    It's almost impossible to properly protect your email address nowadays.

    Email address farming is a pretty well established business and once your address is captured you can expect it to slowly start to get more and more spam. The amount of Blizzard spam is well just a blizzard.

    Here is the new rule #1 for email: If the subject line has Blizzard, World of Warcraft or Battle net in it then delete it. No exceptions. If it is truly from them you will find out soon enough.

    Recently with all the posting about accounts being hijacked I decided to update and check on mine which were all safe and sound but necessitated moving them from the old and in my opinion safer wow account name to the new and stupid battle net email account name so I decided to add the authenticator to each account. In doing so I noticed that my accounts each had a 7 day come on back bonus. Now, if someone did gain access to my account the last thing I want is for them to be able to log on for free as I doubt real thieves really want to activate an account but who knows.

    So, with the accounts activated I've been noobing about and all I can say is that the current state of game play on the server I played on is abysmal. All the top guilds from when I was active a year ago have either disbanded or gone casual. There seems to be no conversation at all any more out in any of the public channels. You get constant in game spam from gold sellers in the chat channels. You get whispers from people pretending to be Blizzard telling you your account has been either banned or awarded an entry into beta and if not that then you get whispers from level 1 toons sitting at around hunting for gold customers. The auction hall seems to be deserted with very little in the way of items for sale. All in all I have to say that while the game plays as well as it always has it just seems depressing. Not sure I will bother to try Cataclysm when it comes out.

    A. If real it should have your real name on it

    B. Log into your BNet account (not via the email ofc) and if your invited to beta it will say so there.

    Other than that ignore em all.

  • AnubisanAnubisan Member UncommonPosts: 1,798

    Come on now... that's easy. Look at the address they are forwarding you to. That is NOT an official Blizzard URL at all...

    Its amazing to me that people actually fall for this stuff... but that is exactly why there are so many "hacked" accounts.

    Out of curiosity how do these organizations get all of your emails. I have played WoW off and on for 6 years now,  I have never once received a phishing email or a fake one in general about WoW.

    It varies but the main way is acquiring email addresses either by purchasing them or by stealing them from various websites. Many websites don't have the best security in the world and frequently when some go offline their assets are made available. Once your email address gets on one of these lists it gets shared pretty quickly. There are also systems that will generate random names and fire them at a server to see which bounce and which don't.

    In the past I've generated different email addresses and used them on different websites to see which account ends up getting spammed and the results have been pretty depressing. I was playing Farmville for a bit and I generated a few new neighbors for myself which required new email addresses and these accounts have not been used for anything else other than facebook and farmville and I've started to get wow spam on two of them that I bothered to check.

    Getting rid of wow spam probably would eliminate 10% of the world's spam.

    I got the same one. I think they are trying to play on people's greed. Oh boy I got someone else's receipt by mistake and can steal their key if I am quick. Serves them right if they fall for it.

    Hello, i do not post much, but i read here alot!  =^.^=

    Beta invite looks like this:

    World of Warcraft®: Cataclysm™ Beta Test Invitation

    Congratulations! You’ve been selected to participate in the beta test of World of Warcraft®: Cataclysm™.

    As a beta test participant, you’ll have the chance to experience the new content and features of Cataclysm before the expansion is released. We’re looking to get your feedback on the overall gameplay experience, including quests, monsters, zones, dungeons, aesthetics, and more as we continue to implement new expansion content. We would also appreciate reports on any bugs you may encounter. These can be logged using the /bug command explained below.

    Getting started:

    1. Get the Installer:Log in to your Battle.net account. In your list of games, click the “Manage Game” button under the Cataclysm beta image to download the installer; you’ll also be able to copy a character to the beta-test realms through the same page. Please note that your Battle.net account should be flagged for beta access within roughly 24 hours upon receipt of this email.

    2. Install the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm client:Once you’ve downloaded the installer, run it and follow the directions to install the client on your machine. You must have a retail copy of World of Warcraft patch 3.3.0 or newer installed on the computer on which you want to install the Cataclysm beta test client.

    3. Run the Game and Log in to Battle.net:  After the game installs, the launcher interface should automatically appear on your screen. Log in with your Battle.net account and you’ll be able to begin playing. You can launch the client at any time by clicking the desktop shortcut or by going to the Windows Start Menu.

    Please retain this email for your records. If you experience any issues setting up your Battle.net account, please contact Blizzard Entertainment Account Services via email at wowbetabilling@blizzard.com

    Please be prepared to enter the current retail Battle.net account name and password you use. To participate in the beta test, you must have a valid retail World of Warcraft account.

    Sending us feedback:

    Typing /bug in chat or Alt + Left-Clicking on an icon will open an error reporting interface, and we encourage you to use it any time you encounter a problem or want to send us a suggestion.

    We have put up forums for discussing the game at http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/index.html?sid=2000

    Only players flagged for access to the beta test will be able to post on these forums, but keep in mind the general public can view them. You are expected to follow the posting guidelines and forum Code of Conduct at all times while participating in any and all discussions. Maintaining a constructive dialog with fellow testers and Blizzard posters will help ensure the forums remain a positive place for discussing and providing feedback about Cataclysm content.

    Troubleshooting:

    If you experience any difficulties installing the beta game client, or have problems connecting to the test servers, please contact technical support either by posting on the appropriate forum at http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/board.html?forumId=7573590or by email at wowbetatech@blizzard.comPlease remember that this software is still undergoing testing, so any in-game issues should be reported using the /bug command.

    If it is not like this then it is fake.

    ALSO!  you never have to click this links in the email.  You can go to your battle.net account and there will be a NEW game in it.  It will say Cataclysm Beta and it will be right under Wrath of the Lich King.   So if you are scared/unsure, just got to your battle.net!

    Hope this help!

    Many ways to get your email address. Just a few:

    - you sign up with a less-then-honest website;

    - your email is publicly available in your profile or on a social network;

    - you posted your email in a forum;

    - your username is part of your email;

    I once went to Mandarin restaurant and I filled up to win a trip to Japan - boy did I get spammed after that! Do NOT give your e-mail to Mandarin!

    One advice that most people do not know about - USE RECYCLABLE EMAILS. You can sign up free at spamgourmet.com and whenever you want to give your email address (creating new account, promotion, whatever), just give that one. You do NOT have to create a new email using spamgourmet, its done automatically. For example: if I go to McDonalds and they wanna sign me up for something to win a car, I give them the following email: mcdonalds.e.myusername@spamgourmet.com - the first word (mcdonalds) tells me where that email was given. The letter E tells spamgourmet to pass only 5 (letter E is 5th letter) emails to my real email, after that they are "eaten", meaning your real email never gets anymore emails sent through mcdonalds.e.myusername@spamgourmet.com. You don't have to create those recyclable emails, just make it up on the spot. I log in just once in like 3 months to check stats - pornsite.e.myusername@spamgourmet.com has several thousands of "eaten" emails... but I only received 5. This is the end of spam!

    Oh yeah, make sure your original email is not a simple word. I mean, if your email is john@yahoo.com then sorry, it won't matter if you use recyclable email or not. You will get spammed regardless.

    I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
