Yes I believe you can use a 360 controller, but I dunno if its easy or hard to set it up, as I've never used one for XI or currently in XIV. I've played with Keyboard only during my 4+ years in XI and am quite comfortable with KB only in XIV also.
It should work fine, but I'll be able to let you know tonight. I've been using an old Thrustmaster 2 in 1 PSP2/PC controller, but one of the analog joysticks has some issues. New XBox 360 wired controller will be arriving from Amazon today. I'm hopeful it will be an improvement!
360 controller works fine, and yes it's plug and play so you don't have to spend much time setting it up. Just set the buttons and calibration in FFXIV's configuration program.
Here is what I did about two days ago to get my PS3 controller connected via bluetooth to my PC. Granted, once you assign the controller to your PC, it'll be locked to it and you'll have to plug it into your ps3 to get it working on there again.
At step 4, plug in your controller and boot up the MotioninJoy application. Go to the Bluetooth Pair tab and click assign now. You can then disconnect the controller and use it via bluetooth. Just remember to push the disconnect button on the MotioninJoy panel when you want to turn the controller off.
It's easy to figure out if you're at an average level of compitence with computer software.

Also will add to this once you use a bluetooth adapter to sync with your ps3 controller that is all you can use that adapter for. You will need another bluetooth adapter to use for anyother bluetooth device.
Added a wired XBox 360 controller today. I had already downloaded the microsoft drivers for it, but I assume it's standard plug and play. The Microsoft calibrator was wonky, so I just reset calibration to default. Then just run the FFXIV config, assign the sticks and keys and good to go.
Much smoother than the Thrustmaster PS2/PC, but I think one of the sticks was screwy on that one.
Everything works great in game. Now, if they could just streamline the UI and improve targeting, I'd be able to say that playing the game with a controller is enjoyable!
BTW, Microsoft packages an XBox 360 controller for Windows. It is identical to the one for the console. Only difference is the included driver disk, but since you can just download the driver, save $10 and by the console version.
Also, just found out they do sell a wireless version for Windows, that includes a receiver. About $20 more than a wired controller, but may be better for some people.

Yeah, I did this a few weeks back in anticipation of FFXIV.
I wasn't able to connect via bluetooth a few months ago, but this new motioninJoy version works like a charm. I'm glad they fixxed it.
