Have there EVER been any re-launched (RESURRECTED) MMORPGs?

About the MMORPGs that died (got canceled), like Asheron's Call 2 or The Matrix Online, I know there were many others that bit the dust as well.

Out of all those games, have any of them ever been resurrected? Or did they partially resurrect and are only available in some countries?

What were those games, and what did it take to resurrect them?

And what might it take to resurrect AC2 and TMO?

I think Ryzom died for some time, came back as a f2p, and is now back to a p2p.

No idea how or why =s

Risk your life 2 also died in NA, but I believe has come back under a new title "Return of Warrior"

The closest I have seen is DDO.  That game was so close to death that it was standing before the mmo pearly gates explaining why it failed, when they pulled it back with a F2P option.

EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests

Here's a resurrected game I know of myself: Meridian 59. Anyone ever play that? (If so, why'd you leave?)

From Wikipedia (Gee, how do I get the quotebox to work?):

3DO shut down the game on August 31, 2000 and it was re-released by Near Death Studios, Inc. in 2002. Near Death Studios was co-founded by former Meridian 59 developers Rob "Q" Ellis and Brian "Psychochild" Green. A new rendering engine was added to the game in the Evolution expansion on October 2004, offering an alternative to its Doom-based graphics. This expansion also included features like dynamic lighting, rebindable keys, mouselook, and other visual improvements.

Meridian 59's game developer, Near Death Studios, announced that they will be closing their doors as of January 6, 2010. Meridian 59 will continue running, just not as a commercial concern of Near Death Studios.

Rising Force Online or better known as RF Online was shut down and  was resurrected as f2p.

  • Shoko_LiedShoko_Lied Member UncommonPosts: 2,193

RF online died but then came back with a new contracted company

Same thing happened to Ace online but happened like 3 or 4 times on this one.

Someone made a thread about this the other day, but apparently Dark and Light is being resurrected and completely revamped by a new company.

I don't think Turbine will ever bring AC2 back, although there have been emulation projects. Unfortunately, AC2 was shut down before Turbine decided to use their F2P model.

The game was finally in good shape and they pulled the rug out from underneath it. It was a shallow game, but the combat system and unique classes made it fun.

I often wished that Turbine would reopen a server for AC2 and added a subscription plan for AC1 and 2. I know I'd tool around in both.

I am not sure if any have been re-launched/resurrected. However, I do know that Ryzom has done a lot of changing hands. The game has a history of different owners. I think that what it all boils down to is who has the money to launch games that have already been released and failed and whether they will invest the time and energy into reviving the MMO and making it profitable.

  • Earth and Beyond,

It was the first MMO I ever played, and I still have fonder memories of playing E&B than I'll ever have with some of these newer MMOs, but still hoping they prove me wrong.  EA shut it down around the same time EVE came out and that's where most ppl went after.

Recently some dedicated fans created an emulated version of E&B,  they rely on donations to meet server costs but everything else is a labour of love to E&B.  They've resurrected this MMO back to a beta state and its been in the works a couple years now.  They've eached a point where they  won't  do anymore character wipes and just do focused testing.  They also unlocked 3 class archtypes which were put in the original game but never implemented when the original game was live.  They are doing a great job for a fan crew and there are about 100-300 ppl online playing at any given time, a small community of nostalgic E&B vets.  Check it out,

     http://www.earthandbeyond.ca/emulator/index.html

The crafting system in E&B was a big part of what gave it such a great community.  "Recipes" didn't exist, the only way to be able to craft something was to first find an original drop and "analyze" it, chance fail/success/critsuccess.   This system gave communal purpose to guilds when trying to map new items..

There were no player shops, no auction houses, all we had was a Market channel... and surprise it was actually used exclusively for commerce, and commerce was a huge part of the community.  I think player stores and auction houses have completely shut out the indulgance of the community in social commerce and isolates players from each other by putting up that afk-trade interface wall between everyone.

It was a PVE game with a few PVP areas, and the game progressed in the long term by the combined actions of the community.   There were a lot of very big secrets in the game, the kind where like a handful of players who were just lucky enough to find an odd device that can't be used but can be manufactured.... and after manufacturing it combining it with various other items and used in a certain area (like a rift) would unlock new things in the game.  Some of the endgame stuff like that was also kept secret (as in guild politics).

LOL I just remembered that there were even players who also RPd as news reporters, and they could put out blog like articles that were built into the game as if they were actual space reporters.

There were no online item databases either, no linking items, everything was in game and you had to learn everything in game and through the community.  To find out what the best items were in the game you'd have to find a player that owned them, and items with the best stats weren't always the best because of all the different types of buffs that existed on items. No BoP or BoE items either.. (before the days of RMT)

They don't make MMOs the way they used to anymore.

I'm not sure if they died (they probably didn't get the chance to live), but would Mythos and Hellgate count?

Also, I didn't know there was an Asheron's Call 2. Enjoyed the first. Never got into it that much since I was young and was denied the credits.

But I do remember begging just to join it again.

    Losing games is depressing.

Luckily people do things like make emulators and host private servers.

Yep, though it only half-died (it can be played in single-player too). Now it's back as Hellgate: Tokyo (or Hellgate: Resurrection as will probably be known in the west)

I might play Hellgate when it comes out. Depending on if it is any good of course.

Square Enix's Fantasy Earth got a redesign and rerelease as the F2P Fantasy Earth Zero, which even has an NA release now. I believe Meridian 59 was actually shut down for a period of time before being resurrected.

Didn't Warhammer online get cancelled before it even got released originally by another company? Does that count? Or was that all just part of the hype?

  • Rockgod99Rockgod99 Member Posts: 4,640

The only one i can think of is Saga of Ryzom.

Easily the best on foot sandbox game since SWG.

Sadly due to mismanagement and a lack of developer support Ryzom has closed down three times.

Today it survives (if you want to call it that) on about 5k to 10k loyal subscribers.

I might be wrong but I think it was a completely different project.

I'd absolutely love it if Turbine made AC2 into F2P once they get LotRO going full steam. The classes in that game were truly unique and amazingly fun to play. I also loved the dungeons, and the world in general had a fair amount of beauty to it. If only the stupid Microsoft chat server system didn't fail. I still believe that was the biggest problem causing so many people to quit and giving it a bad name for the future. Hard to play a MMORPG when you can't communicate with anyone else.

Spellborn is still playable, although it requires some dicking around with passwords and there's absolutely zero development or support. Supposedly the company is "planning" to revamp and re-release it. They said that a long time ago and there's been no word since coming from them I believe.

I'll need to check out E&B emulator. I absolutely loved that game and was crushed when it shut down. Between that and Ultima X being cancelled I decided EA is da debil. May a thousand camel fleas infest their armpits.

Hellgate I can't wait for. I was one of the people that liked it so much they bought a lifetime subscription. I was hoping someone would emulate the servers or patch in LAN play at the very least but it looks like there's a light at the end of the tunnel now that Hellgate: Resurrection is on the verge of coming to NA.
