Will GW2 be to WOW , what BFBC2 is to MW2 ?

LobotomistLobotomist Member EpicPosts: 5,981

There is no question that Modern Warfare 2 is hugely sucessful and popular competitive shooter, probably the most popular at the moment. It is also an excelent game , a pinacle of smooth and perfected gameplay.

And than there commes Battlefield Bad Company 2...

It has small inovation : everything in the game is destructible. Walls , cover. Nothing is safe. The game map changes to waste towards the end of the round.

But now when you try playing MW2 , you can not get over the fact its enviroment is solid and undestructable. It just does not seem right.

In the fact majority of players that have both game , expressed that they can not go back to MW2.

Can it be that small - but perfectly logical gameplay innovation can really change the way how people look at the games ?

When GW2 commes out with it dynamic world events instead of static quests ,

will people be able to go back to WOW and enjoy all those old school quests ?

Or will GW2 be the BFBC2 of MMOs ?

The most ignorant thing that people on mmorpg.com have come up with (well, here and elsewhere), is that something needs to be Something vs WoW.

We'll see.. I see conflicting reports of just what GW2 is, their own information seems to contradict itself if one goes by what people say.. so it's a wait and see policy

I'd love to see the mmo genre move forward like that.   And I think it is like that now somewhat.   I think that is why so many people are looking for a new, highly innovative mmo to get into because they are tired of the old outdated gameplay of many current mmos that are showing their age.  I don't know if it will be GW2 alone but maybe innovations from multiple games coming out that will push the evolution of mmos.   On the other hand, don't forget how Blizz loves to take what newer mmos are doing and then implement them into WoW.  Sometimes they dumb down what they copy but sometimes what they copy ends up being more polished.

And forget  BFBC2.  I'm waiting on Battlefield 3, the true Battlefield series sequal ^^

    It is most important.

All we seen in last years is a stream of WOW copies. A MMO must come that will show to the game producers that WOW is not the only sucessful formula.

Actually, I think BFBC2 innovates on much more than fully destructible environments:

Maps 10 times larger than modern warfare maps

Fixed class based system which gives actual meaning to team based play. You actually feel like what you are doing matters to the rest of the team and the overall chance of your success as a team.

The difference between your team communicating with each other over voice, or simply going lone wolf could mean victory or pwnage

Bullet drop. Need I say more?

The objective based modes (rush and CTF) actually feel more like objectives, instead of a cover up for another team deathmatch. In MW2 all that mattered in the end is your Kill vs Death Ratio. Thats all people brag about, regardless of the mode.

In BFBC2 there is no one particular class setup that gives you a ridiculous advantage like in MW2 (one man army infinite grenade launchers anyone? What about daul shotguns? Tacknife with commando pro and lightweight? Really?). Regardless of your class setup in BFBC2, if you suck, nothing can save you.

One significance of the fully destructible environments you mentioned is that camping is no longer an "I win" button, like in MW2.

You actually get to fly the helicopters in BFBC2, not just call them in as airstrikes.

The guns feel real when you shoot them, because they have ACTUAL recoil.

There's much more I could say. All I'm saying is that BFBC2 did not become the world's best MP FPS Shooter simply because of destructible environments...

With that said, it needs to be noted that GW2 is not just innovating in one or two places over WoW. They are one of the first group of developers who are seriously rethinking the genre, and its traditions.

Yes. GW2 just might be to WoW what BFBC2 is to MW2.

GW2 looks so good that i think Aliens will come to earth just to subscribe and play with us.

I got both MW2 and BC2. i find MW2 rock solid, and BC2 wannabe innovative, cheap and buggy..

GW2 is overhyped, yes i said it, but i BET it will be a brilliant game which will succeed far more than games like AoC, WAR and AION, but this is not the WoW killer, i believe the next generation of MMOs are hitting us, and games as GW2, RIFT, SWTOR, TERA etc. will pull away alot of WoW players, and instead of 1 king, players will be split out in diffrent games, which focuses more on one school of players than all.

    Playing: AoC
Played: WoW, GW, DF, VG, Runescape, LoTRO, AoC

GW2 is more Max Pain and Half life, it is a different game that will add diversity to the genre but it won't kill the standard MMO game.

I belive the genre will split up more in the future, for pretty long have we had 99% games that follow Merian and Eq and 1% sandboxes like UO and Eve.

I think we will see more sandboxes and also more games with a dynamic world in the future but without killing of the standard MMO. We will also get more action oriented MMOs that either have FPS or console gaming parts.

It is great actually because it will make it easier to find a game that fit each person, GW2 is far from the only game in work that offers different gameplay even if it is made by one of the best dev teams.

I think I will like GW2 but I also think many people wont but that is fine, there will be plenty other game for those people too.

Besides, we can't even decide which game that is out now that is best, how could we agree on which game that isn't released that will be best?

I don't think GW2 is going after the WoW crowd. I think it's the first MMO that's really ignoring what else is going on out there. It's also one of the first MMOs to get Huge buzz not based on anything other than it's past game... which a lot of people didnt like because it wasn't a full MMO.

The fact that GW2 has gotten so much attention without Start Wars or Warhammer or Lord of the Rings attacked to it's name... is very very impressive... and shows that it might just have the SUBSTANCE that people have been waiting for.
