The only thing I want to comment on is the statement "it feels like an FF game" (paraphrasing), from the OP.
No it does not.  It feels nothing like an FF game.  It might feel like FF11, but that was a disgrace to the FF franchise, just as 13 was.

    Rofl. You're funny.

FFXI had more FF feel than FFX-FF13. Still does. I don't think I would play it as much if it didn't. Same goes with FF14. The guys who worked on the pre FFX are the same guys give or take a few working on FF11 and now FF14.

I don't understand why I have to press so many buttons to do something. It's really annoying. I was going to upgrade my system so I could run it better, but after having had a hands-on with it I don't really think I want to anymore. It's like they're intentionally making keyboard/mouse control bad for gamepad users. Not to mention the Guildleve timer and the surplus exp.

I'm glad you agree with me. FFXIV has been my most anticipated release since MGS4, and it fell flat on it's face. Despite being above the system requirements, the game chugs along at unstable framerates even though I play on the lowest settings. The game looks good and the music is fantastic, but the pros end there. Combat is sticky and archaic, moreso than FFXI in my opinion. The UI is terribly hard to navigate with a keyboard and mouse. Also, the mouse feels like it's updating only 5-10 times per second which makes it incredibly cumbersome to do something. Heck, even the map is laggy.

To summarize: I cancelled my pre-order after only 45 minutes of playing, and after playing for an additional 45 minutes this morning testing out the gamepad and settings, I am set on not purchasing this product. Square Enix is really screwing up lately with it's worst FF yet (Final Fantasy XIII) and arguably the most archaic MMO created in the past 5 years (FFXIV). I am actually still shocked at how bad the game is.

My system is a bit worse than yours but still above the system requirements. Even on the lowest settings I get 15-20 fps. Granted the game looks nice, but the game has abslutely no scaling or optimization. This will ensure that the game never has a huge subscriber base, which is bad design by SE imo.

Most the bitching in this thread is from the people bitching about this thread. There is some nice feedback going on here. It would be great if the SE loyalist would just stay away and not try to drown them out like they do in every other thread.

After attempting to play this game for about 3 hrs and getting no where I am canceling my preorder.  This game is discustingly slow in all aspects.  I honostly don't know what they are thinking when they made it.  Yea the graphics are great!!  So are so many other trash mmo's out there.  Square/Enyx should be ashaimed of the trash that they have put together.  With all the new action MMO's coming like Tera this game is going to be left in the dust.  Too much time trying to figure out where the hell to go... no quest system to point you in the direction of where to start at.

    TRASH!!!

While I feel as if you're being a bit harsh, I agree overall. Square Enix had plenty of resources to make a solid MMO and in my opinion they have failed. While some will find entertainment from the title, there are far too many issues to consitute a $49.99 + subscription in 2010. The UI/mouse are still the worst I've felt in a game and there's only one month left till release. The game has almost no optimization and as a result only those with up to date rigs can play it properly. The mechanics feel ancient and somehow even less robust than FFXI. I'm so disappointed I just want to cry.

Managed to nab a key earlier today, and spent the best part of the last 10 hours downloading and installing the client. Only managed to play around 30 minutes (barely beyond the tutorial) since its now 1:30am, but I can already tell that this game is a poorly optimized  console port. FPS is actually fine @ max settings on my rig (wth shadows @ normal and no AA), but the mouse lag and unresponsive UI is really bad.

Like people have mentioned, the visuals are probrably the best (easily) in a MMO yet, but it all feels like it is running at half clip, and I haven't even started the game proper yet.

We will see, but Its certainly a case of being no more than cautiously optimistic at this point. I'll certainly be offering my input while the CB is still up and running.

Good luck offering your input. If you got your CB key in the last week you have no access to reporting bugs, beta forums or anything.

Those are being improved just prior to launch. Part of the tricky situation with mouse is that Western players come from the EQ/WoW tradition of point and click gaming, while for the Japanese console gaming is so huge a gamepad is the way to play, and consequently adapting to Western mouse tastes has come quite late in development cycle.

Didn't a dev interview say that the UI lag and FPS issues would lessen with the background programs they have running in beta removed?

He will have access to the forums, but will only be able to post in the General Discussion/Player Site (character blog) forums.  The bug report and official feedback forums will be read only.  Square Enix doesn't want the feedback of new testers.  New testers are just there to play the game and tell everyone how bad it is on sites like MMORPG.com.

Yes, that is certainly true. Part of the frustration of being a modern beta tester is that often the developer collects information silently and directly from you, or in other words most of your feedback is collated just by logging in and playing.

Actually at this point we are not there to test it anymore but only to play.  Since all the new testers have no beta test site posting privalages at all.  We cant do bug reporst or anything so I would guess we are there just to play and help them stress the servers.

I'm actually really enjoying the game as it is, and more than likely won't be swayed from buying it at launch. I just has its fair share of.....issues, which is to be expected.

1 thing that concerns me with this game are the items.  How are the items in the game?  Statistically wise that is.  Are they very similar to most other Asian games where they have no stats but have +Def, +Evade, +Attack, +MP,+HP, etc, etc, etc?  If so, thats a major turn off.

Also, does anyone know if they have any form of dungeons to explore with groups or is everything mostly outdoor similar to Lineage II?  Graphically, the game looks rather impressive and unique.  I had a buddy I used to work with that played FF11 online and he swore by it and played it for years.  Is this one fairly similar to that one where you could mix and match your classes or no?  Not much info has been released so Im hoping someone could answer these questions for me.  Would greatly be appreciated.

    Thanks!

Let's see. Items: From what I can tell they have stats but I wasn't really paying much attention to them personally. I just wanted to get a feel for the game and save the number crunching for after launch.

Dungeons and similarity to FFXI: I lumped these 2 together in order to explain what I have seen in beta. I entered this cave which led to an underground "dungeon" per se. It was a closed off map with a giant map of tunnels and rooms that intersect with each other and it reminded me of Crawlers Nest from FFXI. There is a TON of stuff to explore in this game and it's very realistic in that you can enter a cave/tunnel system and get completely lost. It's awesome. Plus that system is filled with mobs, that at the time and level I was, one shotted me.

You can mix and match even more so in FFXIV then in FFXI in that you can grab a skill or ability from practically any class you have leveled, as long as you have enough points to do so. So you could pull a healing spell from thaumaturge mix it with the pugilist attacks and grab some spells from conjurer or any others that suit your fancy.

I loved FF11 and I'm going to love this one just as much. It's definitely not a game for everyone and requires actual PATIENCE and research and being relaxed while playing, so that right there pushes a TON of people away who are used to running around like they are on speed and speed rushing dungeons etc.

Hope this helps answer your questions. I'm sure there are others here enjoying the game who may know a lot more than myself.

Its the highlighted part there that peeks my interest in this game also I actually would probably prefer to play this on a gamepad, is the game optimized for a gamepad ?

Definitely. I've been using the PS3 controller and loving it immensely compared to mouse and keyboard movement that I do in other games. It gives it a different feel that I happen to enjoy.
