what i would consider a lazy player is one that wants everything handed to them. thats what WoW seems to be after. the player that doesnt have to group to complete lvls or most quests in a very short time. i only take offense that like most people we dont know all the other people who play the same game as we do or mmorpg's in general. most are really nice and great people. i just dont like to be considered lazy or even thought of as lazy. sorry to hear you fall in same category as i a person who could play allday but just dont have the time.
Originally posted by Fadeus I would just play WoW if I want my EQ gaming experience to be like WoW. I am getting abit tired of every game having to be all things to all people. I don't care if EQ II only has 350k users. I liked it how it was in many respects. I don't want EQ II to be so solo friendly I never bother to group and meet people, or have to work with other people to earn something, earned with good teamwork. I think the term "casual gamer" has gotten grossly broad these days. You can game casually and still experience everything in EQ and do it grouped. The term casual gamer is starting to sound more like lazy gamer to me.
Even though I disagree with you I understand what you mean. Regardless of the difference in our opinions, SOE seems to be going into the "please the bigger crowd" direction. If its not your kind of direction, then you might have to make some tough decisions, if not now then perhaps in the future. It seems that northern american and european MMORPG market is leaning towads casual friendly soloable style of play, while asian market tends to go with the hardcore playerbase. You might want to consider playing hardcore games like FFXI or Lineage2.
I am casual player (maybe hardcore-casual player if such term exists because i play 4-5 hours daily and 5-10 hours on weekends) and I dont consider myself lazy in game (except in real life). What I want is convenience. I dont want to spend 2 out of 4 hours running around finishing quests just to get lame reward, I dont wnt to spend another hour trying to find NPC who gives me a quest of my level. the point of the game is to have fun, not "work".
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
Originally posted by Fadeus And I never said all casual gamers are lazy, I said I think the term has become far too broadened on what it includes.
Let me have a stab at it: you aren't talking about time-deprived people (like yourself or me), and you aren't talking about people who play through a game at their own pace. Those are both more traditional interpretations of "casual". I think you are probably talking about the "new casual", or people who won't even TRY to help themselves, who feel like having to work on something over time or figure something on their own is some sort of awful imposition. In other words, the people that devs seem to be falling all over themselves to please, regardless of which company and game you are talking about.
(I know, funny coming from a WoW player, but I am also an old EQ1 player, and I wasn't really very happy about the dumbing down of that game either.)

EQII is an ok game. I stopped playing for 1 reason, and 1 reason only:
It takes FOREVER to get around at lower levels. Running just doesn't cut it. I'm sorry, just to get to the eastern edge of the common lands so that I can fight level 20 mobs should NOT take me 10+ minutes. That was the thing people hated MOST in EQI I am totally astounded that they perpetuated this time sink in EQII
Give us access to AFFORDABLE mounts. If I could cut the travel time in half the game would be much better.
the changes they made look really nice. But if I only have an hour to play it's completely unacceptable that I have to spend 20 minutes to get where I'm going.

I agree. Travel and navigation realy sux in EQ2. My inv is almost alwyas full cuase I hate porting back to city and spend another 15 mins getting back where i was.
I am the type of player where I like to do everything and anything from time to time.
It really does take awhile to get used to the zone layout when you first start. I think they need a much better zone connection map that can help you find where you need to go.
However, combined with the Bell (if you use it enough), the birds, and your gate stone, once I got used to the system (like on my second time through Qeynos), it was no problem for me at all. The first time I hardly used the bell at all. Man it felt like all I ever did was zone.
The new map mods can help a bit, and the new indicator on your quest journal that tells you what zone the next step is in is great for picking up quests you havent' done anything with in a few weeks, or maybe just forgot since the last time you logged in.
I too am looking forward to the sickness thing. I got sick in North Karana in EQ1 during the prerelease period of Luclin (I think), when the plague went around then. Wonder if they'll be opening the moon up again (that's a joke, I know they won't, the gnomes blew it up).

Aye I take a bell, i take the bird too, but the bird can take me only to SW part of zone. If i need to go to SE, then i have to walk. And yes, zone connection isnt very well layed out.

w000t sounds like EQ 2 is getting back up in action and trying to compete with World of Warcraft , the game I'm currently playin!.... So does anyone know about SoE and like a premium thing where you can play SWG , EQ 1 and EQ 2 for all 1 nice price.. my bro was talking about it , If so... EQ 2 is where i'm gonna go.. and thanks for the updates. Atleast EQ 2 has great customers service and patches !! with no lag and server issues like WoW!

Yes, the only reason I play EQ2 at all is because I have the SOE all access pass and it's free to play for me (I got the All Access Pass for SWG and PlanetSide and EQ1, EQ2 is just extra to me. I honestly don't play it much but it's there if I want to).

This is another huge gripe I have. Also, the 'in town' adventure zones don't have a map, you just get the city overview, which is worthless. I don't really MIND but it's a total disconnect from how the rest of the game plays so it breaks the feel.
However, combined with the Bell (if you use it enough), the birds, and your gate stone, once I got used to the system (like on my second time through Qeynos), it was no problem for me at all. The first time I hardly used the bell at all. Man it felt like all I ever did was zone.
I actually don't like the bell. Yeah it's a faster way to get around but all it really does is highlight the fact that the game isn't a seamless world. Why on earth they didn't make the world more like newer MMO's where it's all one world with instanced dungeons makes no sense to me. Honestly, the game is tops in graphics and other areas but whenever I hit a 'zone' (which is invariably a gate or door) I just kind of go numb and say "now who would stick a gate in the middle of the wilderness?" It totally breaks the field. At least zone lines in EQ1 didn't feel artificial. I think the bell would be less intrusive if the cutscene were a *cutscene* showing you hopping on a ship (with your group if you're grouped) and sailing off. Then you just appear where you're going. That would be a LOT less intrusive than that godawful concept art they subject you to.
The new map mods can help a bit, and the new indicator on your quest journal that tells you what zone the next step is in is great for picking up quests you havent' done anything with in a few weeks, or maybe just forgot since the last time you logged in.
Knowing where to go is not a problem. I was one of those folks in EQ1 who knew exactly where I was no matter which zone I was in. It's one of my gifts I guess because it's true in life too. I can go wander around town or the woods or out in the country and know exactly where I've been and have a solid idea of where I'm going. I don't really NEED a Map in EQ2 but they need to be consistant about it. If you're going to map 90% of the zones so players can see where they are then also map the in-town adventure areas instead of just showing them a city overview.
I too am looking forward to the sickness thing. I got sick in North Karana in EQ1 during the prerelease period of Luclin (I think), when the plague went around then. Wonder if they'll be opening the moon up again (that's a joke, I know they won't, the gnomes blew it up).
I'd rather see them address issues like the memory leak (which the game has) and the issues I listed above. EQ2 doesn't lend itself well to casual play. At low levels it does but at mid-high levels it's a worse time sink than EQ1. In EQ1 I hit level 30 in about 2 weeks play. In that same time in EQ2 I hit level 15. No I'm not a level racer but I am a casual player. I want to be able to log in, have some fun, and see at least moderate progress on my character. If I want to play a time sink I'll play the one I have a level 65 Rogue in rather than suffering through the level grind again.
The quests are very good but they're almost too intrusive. I think the grouping game suffers because there are so many quests. A group only lasts as long as everyone in the group shares a quest at lower levels then it shatters. Which really gets annoying.

If you get a decent group or join a guild nobody quits after they get their quests done. I'm guessing you've come across some crappy groups shich sucks, but I assure you it's not the norm.
You don't likr the bell? Ok that's your opinion but it certainly does'nt feel "intrusive" in any way. It takes like 5 seconds for the zone to load.
I too am a casul player and I have yet to feel a "grind". Play the game at your own pace and you won't eithier. I'm not sure where you get the idea that Eq2 is some big grind. If you quest and group more than solo it's not really that bad at all. If you solo 100% of the time then yes, it's bound to take longer. Mkae some good friends and group more often. The game is way more enjoyable that way.
From your complaints I take it Eq2 probably waon't be much fun for you. Which is fine. I just tend to disagree that the game is a "grind" or "timesink". Ever try L2? THAT is a grind.

Hmm What's your definition of casual player? I usually only have 1 hour, MAYBE 2, to play. Doesn't lend itself to waiting around for a group to form. So yes, I spend a lot of my time solo. On the rare occassions that I DO have 2-3 hours to play I don't have trouble getting in a group, I'm a cleric after all.
As to being in a good guild? I don't know if the one that invited me is good or not yet. Too new to it to decide. They seem to do a lot together but they're mostly in their 20's and 30's so I may need to find a lower level bunch.
Anyhow. EQ2 doesn't seem much different than EQ1. I detest the zones. In EQ1 it wasn't a big deal. It was a whole new experience. But zones in todays mmo's? C'mon now. It's the SAME ENGINE as SWG has and there aren't any zones on an ENTIRE PLANET there. Why does EQ2 have so many? In a relatively small area to boot. I could stick all of freeport in our player town on SWG but Freeport has something like 4 or 5 zones for the city. (not talking the little towns)
And why zones? Why not put everything out in the wilderness near freeport and make it 1 world? The ENGINE can support it. It just feels like EQ2 was cobbled together to me. That's all.
Have you gotten the point that I detest zones in a supposedly "next generation" MMO?
There shouldn't BE zones. That's my whole point. Other than maybe into dungeons or instanced encounters. (THAT I like).
