EU or NA?

I was noticing on the NA LotRO forums that a lot of EU players joined NA servers like Vilya and Windfola, from the info in this thread: http://forums.lotro.com/showthread.php?t=350946.

The reason is apparently they don't want to play on Codemasters' servers, but does anyone know what's the issue with Codemasters, or if there are other reasons as well?

Any clarifications are very welcome, thank you.

There are pros and cons for both. Ive never had any bigger issues with the way CM is handling the EU servers.

We usually have less issues with servers and crtitical bugs when there is a new update since SU usually get them a few days later. Europe dont have acces to stuff like mylotro and less direct communication with devs which sucks

The biggest pro for playing on EU servers is that most people play during the same hours and you get less lag.

You can stil get lifetime subscription to EU servers but Turbine have stopped offering thoose so there is alof of differnces how they handle the sericese.

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

Aren't the NA servers going free play first? I can't even find a date for EU apart from 'autumn'. That could be a reason too.

    Same day as NA version.

I live in Europe but I will be playing on NA servers, always better to play on the dev' version of a game, and I'm sure the item shop is gonna be more expensive on EU version.

CM just has really bad customer service.

I prefer playing NA, I have not lag issue and i usually play late anyway so I have no problem with server times.

Oh yeah also CM charged me 2 months of DDO game play after playing the trial even though i never asked to sub to the game...bleh I had to put in my card detail to play the trial and after the trial ended they decided to charge me two months in row

I recently changed from the EU servers to the NA servers during a special offer that got me the entire game with all expansions +30 days gamteime for 10$, back then that was enough reason for me.

In retrospect i think it was a very good decision, ill give you a lengthy list of reasons:

    1. Its cheaper, from subscription to itemshop to future expansions. The Dollar --> Euro exchange rate makes it so.

    2. Your sitting at the source, codemasters has many irons in their fire and is merely a reseller, but LotRO is Turbines baby.

    3. You play at odd local times from pov of the US servers, which for me is a blessing. When the US Servers reach their peak its very late for us, so you can play on high pop servers without the drawbacks of them but get the advantages(like wellsorted AH, large kins etc).

    4. I dont trust codemasters, not with my CC info, not to deliver patches on time, nor to keep their hardware up to date or not overcharge us on the Store(which everyone will want to use at some point, even if its only to buy future x-pacs etc).

    5. I find the community in general tighter. The official forums see alot more posts, not just from devs but generally. The EU community appeared to be a bit behind at times. I.e. when the US forums already talked about how best to tank with a warden the EU was still discussing if wardens could tank at all.

    6. People are either more polite, or they just apear more polite to me because they are speaking a different language, anyway it feels better to me.

Upsides to EU is that they have official RP servers, though its not enforced that much afaik. You also get localized versions if thats important to you, though i would be careful with lifetime access, just think about it, if the trend continues(or worses, over some future problem or something) and more and more players leave towards the US servers, who will be stuck behind? The lifetimers.

Also it smells fishy to me that they are still selling lifetime subscriptions, Turbine stopped doing that because its not longterm financially viable with their F2P concept. I have trouble seeing codemaster being willing to cut their profit out of the goodness of their hearts. Only thing i can think of is that their idea of longterm is not the same as turbines(Lifetime membership is cheaper then buying all the perks and content in the store to bring you on the same level, and even then Lifetimers get a 500 Turbine points stipend, it makes no sense to offer both especially as Lifetimers also get future content free).

  • Yeah Rocketeer this sounds like good reasoning :D

As another new player I'm still going to see whats happening on f2p launch and then think about it.
