General: 2010's Major MMOG-Oriented Game Shows

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

In this week's Free Zone, MMORPG.com writer, Richard Aihoshi takes a look at a few of the major games-related events happening around the world. Beginning with China-Joy, Richard also discusses Korea's GSTAR and GDC Online, formerly GDC Austin (TX). Read all of Richard's thoughts about these events and then add your thoughts.

That said, for those who share my interest in the entire global MMO scene, it's a pretty unfortunate situation. There's a huge amount of activity happening in China, of which we only get to see the proverbial tip of the iceberg. Luckily, I can get some information and feedback from various developer and publisher contacts who attend, but the most interesting things I learn are almost invariably off the record, which doesn't help anyone else.

Read more of Richard Aihoshi's Free Zone.

Personally i dont give a damn about MMOG's, i like MMORPG's which is why i come to this site.

Should this site change to an MMOG site i will be going elsewhere for my news and information.

I for one come here regardless of the past and like the sites/writers ability to broaden the view...

I agree with Codenak.  This article did nothing for my mmorpg fix.

Good article... not everyone is limited in their interests, nor threatens to leave if there is an article that doesn't exactly match their tastes. Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say.

Well I have to say this we live in North America, most of us could care less what happens in in the Asian market.

The entire reason is, we are a totally different kind of culture, and most folks look at those games and barf.

It mike work for the Koreans, or the chinese, but most Americans look at that type of artwork and games, and they are like me just shake there head and go back to the stuff were use to.

Hey, Richard. You know, you could just move to China or Korea and write for one of their sites and never have to worry about all of us NA people who so stubbornly refuse to give a crap about asian assemblyline F2P games. And they, unlike us, will lap up your glorious praise of all that is asian and F2P like it was made of sugary ricepaper with nary a harsh word for you, either.

    Seriously, you should consider it.

Edit: I like how your "articles" are getting shorter. Almost like you're ready to give it up.

-Letting Derek Smart work on your game is like letting Osama bin Laden work in the White House. Something will burn.-

Thanks for the article!!  My husband and I just moved to Austin Tx and didn't know about GDC Online!!!  Booked our tickets straight away, can't wait... thanks!! :))

I think that ignoring what the other side of the world does is just not feasible anymore in today's MMO market. P2P games are increasingl popular simply because with so many MMOs already in and coming into the market and older gamers like myself finding that due to work and other life commitments, I don't have as much time to play mmos on a fixed regular basis, (think raiding guild time commitments) I now not longer look at subscription based MMOs as something I want to spend on especially if I only get to play in earnest only on my days off from work.

That game Prius online or Anima online looks interesting and is actually has done something refreshingly new in a game. Something that the "western" gaming companies seem to want to avoid. War Hammer online, Conan, and other "recent" western MMORPGs haven't exactly been all that good in terms of content either.

So thank you Richard,  for continuing to look at what the other side of the world are coming up with, one can only hope that the best of both can somehow merge and give us gamers that next great game.

you know I'm just poiting out to all the idiots who posted above me (if your not one of those idiots please ignore this), no one forced you to read this article, it clearly said in the title MMOG......so why would you expect this to be an article on MMORPG's.....it also says in the description, "around the world", so im sorry to break this to you, but North America is not "around the world".

Anyway, after reading this article I have to agree, theres alot of upcomming games in other contries that have little or no coverage. In most cases you have to wait for a translation to get any sort of good info on the games.

I agree with Silvarianne;  if somebody could take what appeals to both markets (Western & Asian) and make a game based on those fundamentals, perhaps he or she would make the next massive global MMO.

The fact is this is an MMORPG(Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) site, not a everything MMOG(Massively Multiplayer Online Gaming). If we go based on your obviously sound argument, then they might as well review games such as Mafia II or Counter-Strike or StarCraft 2.  When people come to an MMORPG site, they want to read up and learn about anything new or exciting happening in the world of Massively Online ROLE PLAYING GAMES, not the other.

Did you know that at 1:30am west coast time in the U.S. there is approximately 1.25 million players signed in to just StarCraft 2? That makes it a Massively Multiplayer Online Game for sure, but it doesn't fit in the guidelines of what is come to expect from an MMO in RPG format.

If you are going to post something on a MMORPG site(www.MMORPG.com) then the topics and posts should be about the RPG aspect of the MMO community. Nobody here cares about the lastest golf game some scotch-korean company announced at the GDC, we just don't.

Richard, once again you meet the quota for dissapointment at an alarming rate. I call you by your first name even though I don't know you because you've made me lose all respect for you over your expansive articles.
