So. in the present state this game plays best with a gamepad or the (PS3 controller only?) !! Right ?
I'f so, can i use a standard PC-gamepad or do I need the PS3 one ?
And when playing with a gamepad how is it possible to combine chat and such things in game without putting the gamepad to the side and use keýboard..

You can use whatever u want: just keyboard, gamepad,controller, keyboard+mouse
if u use a controller or gamebad u type on your keyboard ofc
As is seem this game is optimized for controller hence console ported the japs havent even put in a hardware mouse and UI lags like a mofo.
what i dont get for any reason whatsoever is why even make a game for console, must be the most dead community ever in terms of communication.
Keyboard + mouse is the way for mmos period really hope they optimize it or i wont buy the game

I guessed there would be some sort of way to access "short phrases" or emotes with the gamepad..
Well, maybe most gamers comunicate via voice !!

I was using a xbox 360 controller for FFXIV. But the d-pad is annoying.
I desided to test my Gamemon USB convertor to use a PS2 controller with FFXIV.
I got it to work with FFXIV, which is weird I had nothing but touble last time I tried to use the convertor in Win7.
The d-pad is so much better on the PS2 controller.
Anyway, yea you can use any pc gamepad with 12 buttons, 2 analog sticks and D-pad with FFXIV just fine.
the only thing I found faster on the Keyboard was selecting skills with the number keys.
To open the emote menu, you just hit a single button on the controller. (for me it's square (PS2) or X (360))

To me the way to play MMO's is with the keyboard only. So relaxing not having to constantly have to move my right hand all the time.
I never tried a game pad though... I might like it who knows.

It almost feels that way though. It is definately not a mouse friendly game. If it was, they'd surely support a hardware mouse option, instead of having to use their laggy mouse pointer finger that makes me feel like I'm using a Nintendo Wii. I avoid using the mouse, and just stick with the keyboard controls for everything like I did with FFXI. (like pressing "-" on the keypad to pull up the main menu and using the arrows to select a menu option, instead of clicking it with a mouse).
True, but designed for console and console controllers with PC controls being looked at in late beta is not going to be much different.

Good lord! You guys do know that you could use the keyboard!? you dont have to use the mouse or a gamepad. Just go into the settings and change it to full keyboard! Is it really that hard to change to the keyboard or playing with the keyboard?
Your post seems out of place, or maybe you were just trolling, who said they didn't know that they could use a keyboard?
Why would anyone enjoy playing a MMO soley on a keyb? Why should they have to ?

Because it is being made by Japanese developers and the Japanese use gamepads more in their gaming then the west. Open up your mind for once to the possibility that the world doesn't do everything the way you do it.
That being said, they should still implement what the west uses as an option. This is only smart business and good marketing.

This is not about how Japanese developers only use gamepads. This game was built on the idea of the previous game. That game was mainly built for the PS2, then later came out for the PC. They designed it based on that factor. Then when they decided to build FFXIV, they were keeping the controls similar so that previous players from FFXI would have some similarities. That was also true with the Avatar creation in FFXIV. So this not a biased game that the Japanese created only for them.
So i will put the same question to you. Why would anyone enjoy playing a MMO soley on a keyboard and mouse? Why should they have to? Again, if this has worked for Square Enix in the past why should they change it? I feel like some people are complaining about the mouse function because they want something to argue about. I dont feel like that is a big issue. Some games are just simply different. Why cant we play the game as the developers intended? Because we as gamer are always right? I dont get it. I can play AoC with a keyboard and mouse, but I changed all the controls to be completely on a keyboard.
Actually, after writing that last sentence I get why some are asking for the mouse and keyboard. it should be an option. Sorry forget what i said.
I need to open up my mind for bad mouse support ? Japanese do not use gamepads more then others when they are gaming on a PC,show me one playing Lineage with one.9 out of ten times when a game needs a gamepad they play it on a console.Dont think for a minute that the PC version of streetfighter is a massive succes over there.
The game has mouse support,BAD mouse support how should anyone open their mind to that ? Now if they did not add any support for it you might have had a point.The bottom line is that MMO's made with a console in mind are not a good thing for the genre on the PC.STO is a good example of this since it was planned from the beginning to be ported to the X360 and it shows.and i lost hope in FC's TSW oncei l learned that is also going to the 360.
Even a simple MMO' like WoW cannot be made to work well on a console meaning that even a game like WoW will have to be dumbed down in order to make it work on a gamepad.
I am not opening my mind to any bad support!
FFXI and FFXIV are both best played with a controller. FFXIV has tried to put some more support / changes for keyboard / mouse functionality but if you expect it to be a standard MMO keyboard / mouse setup you will be mistaken. I have played MMO's for 12 years and I find it mind boggling that they cant even put in this simple functionality. I canceled my pre-order over a month and from what Ive read now about the state of the game Im very happy I did, the controls are just icing on the cake at this point.
Well I always played and prefered playing FFXI with gamepad and keyboard on the PC. So I for one don not see this as a draw back. In fact after playing FFXI with a gamepad, I wish more MMOs gave you this option.
