Today marks the ambitious game redefining launch of the City of Heroes expansion Going Rogue. MMORPG.com's Garrett Fuller had the chance to interview Paragon Studio heavy hitters Matt Miller, Melissa Bianco, Jesse Caceres, and David Nakayama about the fundamental changes coming with Going Rogue, about their thoughts on the Moral Alignment System and more.
What is the biggest fundamental change with Going Rogue that players will experience?
Melissa Bianco: Great question and it even partly answers itself. You can now change your alignment with our new Going Rogue system so Heroes can fall from grace into the churning pit of villainy and Villains can crawl out of that very same pit towards redemption as a Hero. I think players are going to really like this new feature because now their one character has the ability to see every part of the game. But because it’s not a mandatory feature, those Heroes or Villains who are true to their alignments can stay as they are and even be rewarded for it. So either way, it’s a big step for us and for the players. Very exciting!

I don't think this is going to stem the tide of people wanting to check out DCU Online though.
Six years later, two major expansions, 18 issues, six booster DLCs, and I still cannot create the character that I want to make. I did the pre-purchase earlier in the year, so I figured I would go ahead and resub to give it a shot. Unfortunately, I am left with the same problems that I had back in beta for the original CoH. Okay, the graphics have been updated over the years. Okay, they have given us more of the same missions over the years. So we have more of the same, even though it is prettier. I still cannot make the character that I would like to make. The costumes still have nothing to do with the character. Nothing we do in the game matters. All of the things that have rubbed me the wrong way about the game over the years are still there. Still, I usually end up subbing one or two months a year because there is nothing like it out there. CO was a farce. DCU is going to be a miserable letdown. CoX is the best of the bottom of the barrel. As I watch my gf playing DDO and having fun across the room, I have to wonder what I am doing over here and playing CoH:GR...
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Okay, I take back the best of the bottom of the barrel. Did the vet tutorial to level 2. Did White's missions to level 4. Then I was sent to Ricochet who had no missions. Then I was sent to Flores who had no missions. Asked in Broadcast wtf. Was told to click on folks or street grind. No folks offered anything. Got to level 5 taking out vacuum cleaners and said forget it. There was no way I was going to grind through level 8 to get more missions. Is this some kind of joke? Want to kick myself for having spent the $7 for the GR Booster and another $15 to resub for this garbage.

For anybody that has run into that issue - if you talk to the same person two to four times, eventually they may give you something to do...by the third time I spoke to Ricochet again, she finally gave me a mission.

Anybody find it odd how this is one of the main page items, but there are...like...almost no comments?

Wait a bit. I will go and find some old comments of mine and repuplish them as I have run out of original content to post and people in this thread should have the possibility to read them too.
Good to see CoH still going strong, any new supers MMO will come out half ready, every MMO in the last two years has so no reason to think DC or Marvel will break that mold. So if you want options and content stick to CoH until at least a year after a new supers MMO release.
Yea, it's going to be like that througout all of Praetoria. I'm not really sure why they made it so you had to talk to the contacts again to get them to give you missions. I guess they wanted to make sure they didn't force people to accept someone as a contact?
Still it's a little overcautious and I'd expect it to lead to some amount of player confusion.
That said I'm really quite impressed with both the zone design and the story they've put together with the missions. Some fantastic stuff there.
It´s nice to see 2 and 3 dots allover when you login. Haven´t been like that for quite a while. A promise of end game content is awesome. Now maybe we won´t just shelf our heroes/villains after hitting 50
I usually come back every 6 months or so just to check out the changes and you know what? I might just stay more then 1 month this time.
All statements I make is from my point of view unless stated otherwise.
I think DCUO is going to be a nice game. I think everyone wants to see it be a good game.
But CoV is an easy place to go to and get lost in for awhile. I dunno how immersive DCUO's sort of micro vs macro game play will be in comparison.
I kill other players because they're smarter than AI, sometimes.
it shouldnt be that you have to click on them multiple times to get a mission
when me and my gf got our mish done at 4 we were given another contact and no mish
so we went only to run into a wall of purples in the way...3 deaths later and we get to him
then we said bs and unsubbed
i mean if the only way it could have been done worse is put soe in charge...and dont get me wrong i like cox...i keep coming back to it for a bit...but if you get your customer base frustrated then its gonna be a quick decline on subs again for them.
A) The costume creator in this game is amazing. If you can't create the character you visualize (or something very close) then you're not trying hard enough.
Yes, some contacts need you to close the window and then click the contact again to be offered a mission. It took me about 4 seconds to figure this out the very first time it happened. It helps to actually read the material, and not blindly click on the next or ok dialogs.
C) I'll agree that the missions have been stale and repetitive over the past 6 years, and I too have un-subbed and re-subbed a dozen times because of boredom, however, this new expansion introduces a TON of new mission improvements, as well as new mission maps and FANTASTIC storylines. If you're STILL bored by this, then its time to move on to something else. End of story. Don't kick a dead horse.
Personally, I'm having a blast in Praetoria exploring the city and making character after character to test the new powersets and contact arcs. I used to be guilty of being a 'next clicker' too, but recently I've learned to actually read the content, and am the better for it. The writing in this game is fantastic. Out of the dozen or so people I speak with ingame, nobody is upset about spending the $$ for the expansion (or the new booster) as everyone seems thrilled. I know I am.
If you can't create the costume you want in CoX you will never be able to in any MMO you play. It still has the best designer there is, I can't think of another MMO that has so many options.
I have said in the past that i would wait for more end content before I bought the Going Rogue expansion but, my nephew calls me up and says " HEY uncle Bumf .. have you heard of the new CoH expansion ..I really want to play it lets get the game and play!!" So I did and we gamed for a few hours yesterday and had alot of fun with the new classes of toons.
Having played the game for 5 years and leaving earlier this year I didnt think there would be much there for me but I was pleasantly surprised. The new zone looks good and we didn't experience any of the mission problems that some of the above stated. We did notice alot of shortcuts made on the new factions ( i dont want to dwell on the shortcuts of the factions but some of them were kind of like combining the powers of the freaks and combine for example) and that some of the missions were recolored missions that were from the old CoH but with different paintings and colored walls.
Alot of the laboratory typed missions were the same layout with different type mobs in them but still challenging and fun. What really confused me was that around lvl 8 my nephew and I were forced to "solo" because the next mission was one that required a major decision to be made about going to the good or evil side. I do understand the why of this .. but i don't realy approve of being forced to solo. We ran out of time so I will have to see how long this first group splitting mission takes after work today.
In closing .. there are ups and downs with Going Rogue.. but I am not dissapointed in my decision to buy the expansion. It does help to play with someone you know though and communicate through a Ventrilo or Teamspeak type program.
Work hard Play Harder
Despite the negativity seen in many of the posts here, the "City of" games are the *ONLY* MMORPG that's kept me subscribed CONSTANTLY from the first day. I've been on over 5 years now, and no end in sight. Going Rogue gives us some of the things I've been waiting for...the ability to switch your alignment back and forth, as well as totally new content. And the graphics are GREAT now! I just find myself wishing my processor were a bit faster, and my RAM a bit higher, so I could max ALL the settings in ULTRA mode!
This was a bug and was recently fixed.
