Its Mass Effect meets Wow with a Star Wars storyline

OsmanthusOsmanthus Member UncommonPosts: 105

Its difficult to read this forum and keep silent because so much of what is said here is total bullshit.

I can sort of understand why people are so antsy about this game: a whole lot of the stuff Bioware has shown, especially "screenshots" are not very good (not even real..).  Its odd because the game itself is much better than they portray.  I sometimes wonder if they are not purposefully down-playing their game to avoid the hype-flop syndrome so many other MMO's have faced.

My title says it all, and yet, I'm sure that many people on this forum will misinterpret it. Say, "oh its just a wow clone", "oh its just single player".  No.   Its mainly the good stuff from each.

The production quality is like like Mass Effect.  Similar quality graphics, voice overs, character interaction.

The controls and open world are like World of warcraft.  It is not like Age of Conan, Guild wars, or Aion.  Its like Wow.

It should be clear that the theme and story are Star Wars.  But its not just a skin pasted on, the stories really do give a Star Wars feel, and make you feel like a star wars character.  e.g. Smuggler feels like Han Solo.

The combat is somewhat different from other MMO's.  Also it varies a lot between each class, so you can love the game if you play one class, but hate it if you play another.

Basically, my point is,  this game does not have most of the flaws people on this forum attribute to it by reading the tea-leaves in the forums or reviews by people who played it a few minutes at a Con.

Are there flaws?  You betcha.  Mostly the type of stuff we've seen with other games in beta state. With a year left and beta feedback, they could all be fixed.   They probably won't be though since its never happened in the history of MMO's before.

Flawed but probably the next big thing, my guess.

I'm not sure what the question is.  The in-game graphics are similar to Mass Effect graphics, and scale to your video-card's ability. Many of the screenshots posted on the official site appear to have been manipulated.  In particular, the lighting effects don't appear to be rendered by a gaming video card.  It's as if they were rendered in a 3d drawing program and not the actual game.

It is quite common for game companies to publish images that are not actually in-game footage.  What I notice here is that the published images have a ...cheesy...quality that does not represent, to me, what the game actually looks like.

Bottom line is simply this: the graphics are like Mass Effect.  If you like Mass Effect graphics, but not these screenshots, then you are in luck.  If you can't tell the difference..well, there's that to.

I could certainly see the difference, it just made no sense that they would down-play the quality of the graphics. Especially if they're of Mass Effect quality.

Well, one thing about game graphics is that often a still image just doesn't render the effect that a moving, live game footage provides.. Sort of the "feel" being half the quality of the image, which a screenshot just won't show..

I've noticed that in some screenshots of games I've taken.. Maybe that's what the OP is missing from the bioware released images

The comparison to WoW scares me. While WoW might be fine with some people, I am not one of them. Anything that is attempting to duplicate WoW just can't be that good. It can not be Star Wars in Wow clothing. So, I hope that comparison is not in fact true.

Eh, this is bioware, and a big budget AAA title.. of course it will be wow-ish.. it was always going to be wow-ish. That's the only way a big budget can re-coup it's costs these days. Dunno why that would surprise anyone.. it was obvious from the moment they announced it heh

Arrrgg.  No. Its Star Wars in Mass Effect clothing.

The comparison to Wow are, as I said, mainly the good aspects.  Its a very large free open world without instance-zones like Guild Wars or Age of Conan, or the trapped in feeling of Aion.   Its massively multiplayer like wow, unlike Mass Effect. The keyboard and camera controls default like Wow; this is only important to note because they are not clunky like other Bioware games (KOTOR).

    Haha! Same here!

The title makes the game sound totally awesome!

Combining elements from different existing concepts is called evolution. I don't expect something entirely new and revolutionary. Those games are dead rare.

But this title just sounds like something i'll throw my bucks after!

Honest question ... what makes your opinion more valid than theirs?

I agree with your thread.  I've been excited and watching/reading every little tidbit I can get my hands on over the years, and for me personally, it's building up to  exactly what I'm looking for in an MMO, plain and simple.

I was so relieved to find out that the game will be "fluid" and open, not like Aion or AoC, that was my last lone fear about it.  The combat looks refreshing from what I've been seeing in leaks, etc.  It seems alot more exciting, that you can actually put your own tendancies and personal flair into the fights, and not follow a cut-out mold of exactly how to get through fights ala WoW.

The combat in WoW, while fun for what it is.. is just monotonous and repetitive to NO END.  Maybe not so much the PvP since you have to react to what's going on, but the PvE doesn't hold a candle to the amount of personal customization you can throw in your "rotation" of abilities in SWTOR.  It really doesn't.  Just watching the Smugglers and Imperial Agents dive behind cover and attack, just adds a vision of flair and fluidity that's just not present in any other MMO's I've personally played.

Interesting OP. But I have a few questions.

I see a big difference between ME graphics and SW:TOR graphics. I can understand that you can'thave the graphics of a singleplayer game in a MMO, it's not smart. But there's certainly also a difference in style, so it makes me wonder how you can say they're the same, besides both presenting scifi themes and settings.

The worlds, reading the reports of people I've no reason to doubt that they'll present a fluid, organic feel to the game with no loading screens at all and such.

But most of all, you come across as if you have some more extensive information than most other people. Is this a 'kind of talking about ingame (beta?) test experiencing without breaking the NDA'?

The ACTUAL size of MMORPG worlds: a comparison list between MMO's

The ease with which predictions are made on these forums:
Fratman: "I'm saying Spring 2012 at the earliest [for TOR release]. Anyone still clinging to 2011 is deluding themself at this point."

This is what I have been thinking this game will be like. I think it will be a really Star Wars experience and that will pull a lot of ppl through the game. The classes are the weakest thing imo, they do not capture the imagination very well, a few good ones but a few very bland ones too, but that can still improve, no doubt.

Everyone should know SW:TOR is a WoW meets KoTOR meets Mass Effect meets WAR meets Tootsie Pops clone by now...

    ...

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

Beta hasn't started yet, only selective testing.

I agree with you OP and the write-up from the main site posted in these forums gives me this feeling that you are right. But a lot more needs to be revealed before many here will agree with you. They said at gamescon that they will have some higher level game play to release in the next few months as well as a look at crafting down the road. So game play past level 3 will be needed to find out more. As well as graphics past the medium setting with no shadows in the play test. (that was from the 45 minute play test on the main site forums)

I loved Dragon Age and I currently play Mass effect 2 and I'm lovign it.

If only the art design was closer to Mass Effect 2 (to a point) that would be perfect.

It's actually the Star Wars : The Old Republic (SWTOR) AAA , MMO being produced by probably the Number one GameDeveloper with respect to RPGs we have seen in the last 10 years, Bioware.

Whatever spin you put on it it is just as I have stated. Nothing more nothing less.

Yeah, I would have preferred a slightly more realistic approach myself. As far as Mass effect 2 goes, I will be firing it back up for the Shadowbroker dlc with Liara when it releases. Good luck and have fun.

What do you think beta is?  Ding Ding it's selective testing lol.

Just because most gamers have a distorted view of beta over the past half decade plus, thinking it's a free trial to test the game before it's released, thats not what beta really is.
