I'm convinced that the reviewers of the original Torchlight played the game for about an hour before quiting to write the reviews.  Because thats about how long it is a great game.  Then it gets really terrible.  Each class has one obvious overpowered skill, which is the only button you'll be mashing for the rest of the game, and every map level is identical to the previous, with the same mobs and everything.  It really does seem great, until after that first hour or two.

They always said Torchlight was just a warmup to the MMO version.  But now they're backing off the MMO and just making it a bad Diablo clone.  Underwhelming and disapointing are the words I would use to describe this IP.

It doesn't look so bad to me. Maybe I'll play this while I wait for Diablo 3. Thanks for the trailer.

Although i played the game for over 100 hours. Which is incredible time for single player game. And i am playing it often still.

So the game is far away from being a dud.

That said. I do feel game is just to easy. Even on hardcore dificulty. I feel skills are not very well thought out.

All else that you said is a a wash. You probably played the game on easy ?

I love hack&slash genre. And roguelike.

And played all games it has to offer.

Torchlight is easily among top 5 of all times.

There will be an MMO version. They're going from single player to multiplayer with this game, after that will come the MMO. It's a smart way to do it, in my opinion.

I generally find the hack and slash gear hunting games boring in the long run, but in short bursts they can be fun. Torchlight's problem is that its spells and abilities are not really inspiring; to me it never provided the awe you can sometimes feel as you're tackling hordes of monsters with your sorceress in Diablo II (not that I'm such a big fan of Diablo II). I'd even say the whole thing felt a bit, well, menial sometimes.

Still, it has has a character of its own with the visual design and the pets, the gear hunt can still be addictive, and now it's got multiplayer. Plus, it's cheap! (the person in that video said it'll be no 50-dollar game for sure)  I'd probably still get it if only to try the multiplayer for a couple of weeks.

Torchlight was a good time waster, just like Diablo was. However, the best Diablo "clone" that I have played was Titan Quest. At any rate, I'll be taking a look at Torchlight 2. It really depends on when it comes out and what other games are out there.

Sounds like your the one who only played it for an hour, since ive seen at least 3 levels sets already, and if you spam one skills all teh time guess whos fault that is? Yup! thats right its yours.

Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
