Me & Friend looking for alternative MMORPG to play

MilenninMilennin Member Posts: 5

Yo,

Me and my online friend got into some complications (long story) on RuneScape, and while we will probably continue playing that game, we are interested in looking for alternative MMORPG to play. Now both of us aren't really familiar with the huge amount of MMORPGs out there, and that's why I am posting here.

A few things we are looking for:

-Free or cheap to play (don't mind having to buy a CD-ROM or a small subscription fee, but nothing like World of Warcraft where you have to buy the CD-ROM + expansions + heavy subscription fees)

-Nothing too grind heavy (may include some, but should not make up 95%+ of the game content)

-A cool and nice looking world to explore, preferably fantasy-styled (doesn't need to have a 2010 feel to the graphics, but certainly not looking for something from the "stone-age")

-Having a decent quest system (not looking for the game with mainly kill 10 rats, collect 20 feathers etc kind of quests...)

Me and my friend will both be buying Guild Wars 2 when it comes out, we simply need a game to fill the time between now and the release of Guild Wars 2... so probably around 1 year.

I think that should cover most of it. Looking for ward to seeing some ideas and suggestions.^^

Try Allods Online, SUN online, or Tales Of Fantasy. They are all MMORPG's, free, and great graphics.

Never heard of Tales of Fantasy. Is it based on the Tales RPG's (such as Tales of Destiny/Abyss/Symphony)?

Sort of, its an Asian MMORPG. Its based somewhere in Asia and its something bout fighting old forces from there?... I beta tested it and it seemed okay, ALOT of bugs tho. Id do Allods if I were you, its basically WoW without the fees.

Thanks, I've just had a look at Tales of Fantasy, and the graphics seem pretty good.

I'll go check on Alloids. Of course still open for another suggestions too.

Also look at Soul Of The Ultimate Nation or Runes Of Magic, both are great MMORPG's

Have you tried Guild Wars 1?

    GW1 has no subscription fees.

Grind is optional in GW1, after you finish the game two times (hard mode) you can stop playing or work on titles which feel grindy after some time.
-A cool and nice looking world to explore, preferably fantasy-styled (doesn't need to have a 2010 feel to the graphics, but certainly not looking for something from the "stone-age")
GW1 is fantasy styled and a lot of people enjoy it's graphics style.

GW1 has none of collect/kill quests, mostly escort, defend, protect etc. but anyway not many people do quests, you have missions instead which build the storyline and they are challenging and pretty fun.

If you don't want to buy entire trilogy, you can buy one game (unless you want to play as Assassin or Ritualist) I'd recommend Nightfall - I started with Nightfall and it is the most fun GW game for me. Some people prefer Prophecies (first GW game), whatever.

Also, some titles and stuff in GW1 are supposed to transfer to GW2, so that gives you another advantage if you want to play GW2 in the future. Also, GW1 doesn't require massive time investment - I have accumulated 1300 gameplay hours over 3 years - that is around 1 hour per day and I have a lot of achievements (I play almost exclusively PvE) and had a lot of fun playing with friends.

Be warned though, GW1 isn't classic MMO like WoW/WAR/Aion/... and shouldn't be approached as such.

Yes, I have played Guild Wars 1 and all expansions.=p And my friend is wiling to try it out if we can't find anything else. The problem with Guild Wars 1 is that I have finished pretty much everything there is to do (26maxed titles), so yeah.=p But thanks for the suggestion, I guess it wouldn't hurt starting over on a new character just to play with my friend.^^

Tbh GW is more about pvping then doing the actual 'content' per say. If you have done that to death already then you probably will get bored again going back to it. As for other games that fit your remit there isn't really anything that isn't total garbage out there that meets those requirements i'm afraid.

Yeah, but neither of us are the PvP type, so we won't be trying out that, except maybe the occassional Alliance Battles match.;p

I checked a short video of Runes of Might, which actually looked pretty cool. I think I'll be trying out that game for a bit.

You may want to check out Zentia. It is a humorous MMORPG...like Princess Bride. We have silly outfits, glowing weapons, and awesome armor. Other cool features include an extensive pet and mount system (you tame them yourself!), mounted combat and multi-player mounts (10 person dragon) and a Guild city! Also Pkers can be sent to jail through a jail system!  Our moto for the last few months has been 'Leave the Grind Behind" .
