I would go back to COH if....

Paragon studios would allow open world PVP. Just because it makes absolutely no sense to have heroes and villans never face off against each other. It never happens they way in comics. The villans always go out into the world and try to cause as much destruction as possible and the heroes always fight them out in the open. The PVP zones don't count either. Everytime I went into a pvp zone and attacked someone they would whine and say they weren't ready or they didn't want to pvp then they would scream about how they were going to report me for griefing.

Does anyone even play that game anymore? I know GR is coming out soon but whenever I decided to get a time card and came back for a while I would go in during peek hours and no one was on. I mean No One! Even on freedom and virtue, the two highest pop servers that were locked during 7pm to 12am because so many people were on.

I may come back one last time but I'd like to know if it's worth it. Where is everyone in that game?

I've been playing since launch.   It is still my favorite go-to MMO.   Freedom is the busiest server if you're looking for max people.    As for open world pvp, the game simply wasn't designed with that in mind.   Square peg/round hole.    While you make a valid point about the lore, unless the pvp was consentual, people would leave in droves if it was done for all zones.    I don't pvp but I will the say the possibility of some extremely valuable pvp-only drops have tempted me.

I'm not sure how you experience "no one was on" on Freedom during peek times.   I was logged in mid-day yesterday and there was about 2 dozen crowded around one black market in one zone alone.     If you're looking to do a task force/strike force, go to Cimerora and broadcast a few LFSTs, you'll get a team.

People asked for the open world PvP, even if consented to, i.e. flagging oneself, over and over back when CoV came out. I forget why they said no, but I remeber thinking it was a cop-out.

I dk about population, I gradually quit playing over the last year. but there were tons of folks on Freem and Virtue. I just had basically done everything in the game - had like 20 lvl 50 toons.

I'm the opposite, I'd go back if they got rid of CoV completely. I always thought it was a bad idea splitting a low population game into two different areas, it just thins the areas down even more. They should have focused on the hero side and made new things to do, more varied gameplay, etc. They thought they were onto a winning formula with CoH so tried to cash in with an emo-kid version which I don't think really worked.

  • I am not real sure I understand why you think this would work in anyway.

CoH has multiple zones with "open world" PvP in that zone.  Zone wide pvp already exists.

So you want, what, to go to Steel Canyon PvE Hero only zone as a Villain and attack people?  Why?  CoH is almost allways played in an instance.  If you wanted non-consentual PvP you would just wind up chasing people who have a travel power.  You will either Immob -fly them and kill them or just be chasing people around for a short time and then lose them in a Mission door.

I think it would be kind of cool if villains could be like the Scorpion and Spiderman where they have a big involved fight across the city and on roof tops but CoH is not really built to have something like this to happen.  But for this sort of thing they need to borrow a page from APB.

The CoH game mechanics do not make sense for "open world" PvP just willy nilly.  The normal CoH pve would simply not work with it, this is not a game like WoW where you can gank someone farming hides.

Instead what you would need are special zones with a mission structure similar to APBs mission structure with a PvE/PvP mix.  In fact COH should just steal it straight from them it would be pretty easy for them to implement.

They should re-use the Mayhem and Safeguard content and create an APB style of PvP/PvE mix where player villains are running around doing various stuff and player heroes are recruited to come in and stop them.  A number of details would need to be changed, but all the basics are in place.

Going rogue will allow people to switch back and forth and even make Villain archetypes that play hero side.

It'll never happen because CoH is a carebear game through and through. Plus, what PvP there is really stinks (though I've partaken in it from time to time out of boredom/get away from leveling for a while) so you're not missing anything when you're not PvPing.

Want open world PvP? Allods and Darkfall are available to you. Also, play on a PvP server in DCUO.

This is kinda what I was getting at. The PVP is next to nothing in this game and it just bugs me to know that basically villans will essentially be able to go on to the hero side yet the heroes can do nothing except run up to them and do emotes. Yeah in WoW it sucks when you're on a pvp server and you get ganked but then again you're on a pvp server, what do you expect? I like things to make sense, and villans running around AP with no heroes to fight them just doesn't make sense. I know that it's not really villians because they're on a path to redemtion but technically they are.

If they got rid of PVP entirely it wouldn't change a thing about the game, if they re tooled the game to allow real pvp then it would at least make it interesting but everyone would whine about getting killed even if they flagged themselves as many agreed to if a self flagging pvp system was implemented.

And to the other person, I got a time card when I16 came out (I think) and even a few days after the release when people were done playing around at the tailor with the power customization( which the community and Devs said would never happen) I tried logging on to freedom and stayed on there all day and only found 1 lvl 20 to team with because he needed help.

Hopefully GR will have decent things that will bring me back that won't be just the some old enter office/cave/sewer/warehouse and kill/rescue/retrieve item- rinse and repeat missions that I've already done. I never did get a chance to do an actual raid in that game because hardly anyone did them when I started playing back in 06. The most epic thing I got to do in that game was ITF.

Or maybe just PVP servers? Maybe that would work? IDK. And I usually suck at PVP so it's not like I go around ganking newbs as the kids say. My wife also decided to get back on coh and she had a 50 villain in Grandville and she said it was completely dead when she logged onto Freedom. I saw a handfull of people on when I came back but going to PI to look for a group was useless and this was the place where all the 50's were. I even spammed LFG for any Level 50 stuff and got no reponse.

Seems like a poor rationalization for open PVP.  Villains or heroes didn't show up randomly in comics to fight.  They showed up at very intentional parts of the storyline.

Aside from that, my friend who still plays logged on to show me some stuff (all the new customization that's been added since I played) and it still seemed like quite a few players were playing.  Not sure where this "nobody on during prime" idea comes from. /shrug

I play regularly on virtue and there are hundreds of people on nightly when I'm on prime time - west coast Canada in case you wanted to know.

Just because you don't like it doesn't mean it is bad.

I would come back if there was something meanfiul to deck out for implants for. You get your character maxed out, then yuo're supposed to reroll? Boring.

    I loved CoH too :(

  • darqkdarqk Member Posts: 20

unless there has been a large increase in subs in the past two or three months then you'd be right. either that or everyone was hiding out in MA missions maybe? All I know is that I logged on and couldn't find anyone to team with and on villain side grandville was dead. My wife usually lagged out in GV but she didn't when she logged on. I'll give it one more try to see if all these people are playing like you said.

When I was actively subbed a few months ago, my Villain server (Triumph I think it was) was completely dead.  You'd be lucky to see 12 people on a world wide search at times.

That being said, Virtue (my Hero server) was always populated and a lot of fun.  It's a shame there wasn't more to do when I finally got my Empathy Defender to 50.  Rolling alts is fun when you're bored or find another class you really enjoy, but I want more substance to remain active on a high level character.

Then you're in luck because Going Rogue features an endgame where you can make your 50s even more powerful, so you can go from sidekick/hero to full-fledged superhero.

A little background on me, before I comment. Honestly, I'm not much of a PVPer. I usually prefer to play in a more co-operative manner than a competitive manner. However, I have taken a few of my characters into the City of PVP zones, specifically for the object of getting into some fights. And, depite my initial misgivings, there were times I had quite a bit of fun! But then again, I'm not a person who gets upset by getting killed by someone who is just plain BETTER at PVP than I am. I *DID* run into more than a few people exploiting and team-ganking, and chain-holding, and I realized it was just stat-padding to some, and an opportunity to "talk trash" to others. Like I said, I don't mind losing to another player who has more SKILL than I do, but it gets old when you're getting ganged up on (out-numbered 4 or more to 1), or exploits are being used to "cheap shot" you to death. Or there are GLARING weaknesses to certain archetypes and / or powerset combinations, that leaves them almost un-survivable for any length of time.

All that said, PVP in *EVERY* zone in the game could just turn certain zones into LAG CITY. Atlas Park full of Stalkers ganking newbies every 3 seconds? New people would get mad and quit before they even learned what the game was about. Special zones specifically for PVP, where everyone is set to the same level, makes a lot more sense...and that's what they did. But if you're in a PVP zone, and you get killed, you really don't have much to whine about, unless it was an exploit, or you just got ganked over and over and over without a chance to leave the zone. (Yes, I've seen that happen, back in the old days.)

    +1

I've been playing off and on since launch and I've always been more about Team PvE than PvP. I tried PvP some when I was beta testing CoV and after launch, but it doesn't really satisfy. It's fun sometimes, but several Archtypes are not suited to it at all.  Most Defenders don't have the damage output needed.  Controllers have holds, but do less damage than Defenders. Blasters have serious damage output, but are fragile. Most of he redside archtypes are better balanced for PvP but it's still Stalkers, Brutes, and Dominators that shine.

As for the "endgame content," they keep adding more with each new issue (except for i16 which was basically just power custimization with some other QoL changes) and Going Rogue and i19 "Incarnate" will add quite a bit more. In fact i19 "Incarnate" is supposed to be ALL ENDGAME CONTENT. Stuff that you can't do until 50 that you can ONLY do at 50.

Going Rogue has also done wonders for the server population. Any time I log on, day or night on a weekend or week day, all the servers are a least at medium load and Freedom and Virtue are always at  heavy load, so that's better now too.
